  • Sadly,Johnny Carson passed away today at the age of 79....he gave us many years of laughter.

    Rest In Peace Mr. Carson

  • I didn't know that, Arthur. I'll have to look for that scene with Johnny.

I was so sad to hear the news yesterday. You know you're dealing with a big-time personality when they interrupt regularly-scheduled programming to announce the death of one person. Johnny was grace and class through and through. He treated everybody on his show equally - from the biggest of big names (like Duke) down to the smallest of small-town storymakers (like the guy who could "fart songs" with his hands - he played "Stars and Stripes Forever"). And funny, too - of course. A natural with impeccable timing - who knew just when to make that deadpan face and then back it up with an unbelievable one-liner.

I haven't enjoyed late night since his departure in '92.

Regarding the shows with Duke - I read an article published in Esquire a few years back about Johnny and what he'd been doing with his time. He talked about the fact that tapes of all his shows had been secured in an underground vault. He really seemed to have a "what the hell" attitude toward them, but had been urged to save them for posterity just the same. So they exist, naturally - maybe someday we'll get to see them. I have lots of other favorites I'd love to see with Johnny.

Edited to add - found some info on Duke appearances on official Tonight Show website: He was on six times and for the later dates you can get info on what they discussed.

3/22/73 - "John Wayne does a surprise walk-on and says to Johnny 'it's great to be with you Merv'." Apparently Duke walked in during a very tense interview with someone named Jaye P. Morgan.

10/15/75 - "BOB HOPE and BING CROSBY (WALK-ONS) CS sing 'Road To Nostalgia' to promote Hope's anniversary show, and then JOHN WAYNE (WALK-ON) to join them. "

1/8/76 - "JOHN WAYNE - (WALK ON) They discuss: Giving up smoking, his upcoming TV special, movie plans and congratulates Carson for good review in Wall Street Journal. "

Looks like he liked to surprise people by walking on quite a bit!

  • Hi Kevin -

I did that too! When his final week was announced, I set up to tape each Tonight Show for that period. Still have them (and, believe it or not, I know where I have them)!
Johnny Carson, although he has been off the air for over a decade, will be sorely missed. Even though we haven't been able to benefit from his comedy and wit all these years, the finality of death makes one realize that there will be no more.

    Regards, Jay :(

    Cheers - Jay:beer:
    "Not hardly!!!"

  • it is sad..i turn the tv on and seen it..I love the show when he did it,when jay took over i have not seen it much..we will miss you rest in peace

  • Rest in Peace Johnny. You are in a better place now with much great company. You will be sorely missed.

I grew up watching his show as well. Some of my favorites were when he would dress up in some costume and do a skit. I also remember his farewell show.

Actually we have been enjoying his comedy once in awhile. He used to send Letterman jokes and Letterman said he would put them in his monuloge and Johnny would always get a kick out of hearing one of his jokes.

Yes, he will be surely missed. Try picking up his Ultimate collection on DVD. It is quite the treasure.

Jen, funny you should mention that particular guy . . . last night as we were watching the first DVD in our set of The Ultimate Carson Collection Vol 1-3, we got a real laugh out of him, as he was one of the guests included.

SXViper, I'm guessing that is the same set to which you made reference. We've had it quite awhile, but thought it "timely" to watch it last night.

Kevin, we too taped those last shows of the great Johnny Carson back in '92. The entire last show is included in the DVD set . I remember watching it in real time, and the Mrs. and I commenting on how quickly that hour went (we just didn't want it to end, I guess).

Unfortunately, John Wayne doesn't seem to be one of the celebrity guests included in this set.

    Chester :newyear:

  • You know I seen some of the clips and saw The Tonight Show with Jay Leno last night, and enjoyed the laughs with some of the guests. Anyway, I wanted to say that I grew up watching it, and remembered how funny and great it was, and seeing some of the clips last night reminded me how much comedy and variety was golden back then and how we missed the boat today. I will always remember the golf swing after the monolog. That was a special signature from the king of late night.

    Cheers

Johnny Carson is coming to Turner Classic Movies

The cable network has struck a deal for dozens of vintage Carson interviews with movie and TV stars including Jimmy Stewart, Gregory Peck, Drew Barrymore, Steve Martin and Elizabeth Taylor. Many of the interviews haven't been seen on TV since they originally aired on NBC.

Turner Classic Movies will use the footage to create 10 one-hour specials called "Carson on TCM" that it will start telecasting in the summer of 2013. TCM will also use Carson interviews as interstitial programming in between its regular movie programming when appropriate. For example, if the channel runs a film featuring Jack Lemmon, it will also show an interview the actor did with Carson.

The agreement came about when Peter Jones, who produced the acclaimed PBS documentary "Johnny Carson: King of Late Night," approached TCM to see if it would have interest in getting access to Carson's interviews. Because of Jones' relationship with the Carson Entertainment Group, he was able to secure the rights to the material and then license the footage to TCM.

Jones sent a couple of clips to Charlie Tabesh, the senior vice president of programming for TCM including a lively one between Carson and Doris Day that veered into a discussion about, of all things, pornography.

"It was immediately intriguing to us," Tabesh said. The interviews, Tabesh added showed how skilled Carson was at bantering with stars compared to the current crop of late night hosts. "They feel a little longer and they go off in different directions you don't expect."

Of course, the stars were different then too and weren't so worried about going off script.

"It is so stark and obvious when you watch these clips how canned it all is now," Jones said, adding "People will again say `Did you watch Carson last night?'"

This is great. He was the best interviewer ever.
