    Mini Biography
The son of actor Victor McLaglen, he grew up around movie people
and early on, developed an affinity for the business.
Briefly involved in production of industrial films, he entered Hollywood filmmaking i
n the late 1940s, initially working as an assistant director
(on such films as The Quiet Man which costarred his father
and gave him the opportunity to work with John Ford).
McLaglen made his solo directorial debut with Gun the Man Down (1956),
and worked steadily throughout the late 1950s, the 1960s,
and the 1970s before slowing up somewhat.
He specialized in Westerns and adventure films-especially
those of his father's frequent costar John Wayne and,
while lacking any specific visual "trademark," turned out consistently
    entertaining and commercial movies.
He also became a prolific TV director, helming episodes of "Perry Mason,"
"Rawhide," and "Have Gun-Will Travel," among others.
He was the principal director of "Gunsmoke" during its
    first years on the air.

as an assistant director, than part of Duke's clan,
as an asst. director, for the new Batjac,
before becoming a fully pledged director in his own right.

    The Undefeated (1969)
    Hellfighters (1968)
    McLintock! (1963)
    Blood Alley (1955) (assistant director)

Not a bad record with Duke,
    I think 3 good ones,
    1 OK one,
    and a poor one.

Andrew was also director, of TV classics, like
RAWHIDE, HAVE GUN WILL TRAVEL and PERRY MASON
He was also in charge of films including James Stewart,
    like
SHENANDOAH, BANDOLERO and THE RARE BREED

  • Hi

ASlthough not employed by Ford McLaglen worked as an assistant on the Quiet Man, and it was him who noticed that in the scene where following the wedding the villagers were bringing Mary's furniture to seans House.

McLaglan noticed that the villagers were in their every day costumes and told Ford that after an all night party they would still be in their party clothes.

Ford tapped an empty piece of paper in his shirt pocket and said I have already made a note of that.

MacLaglen knew that Ford had done no such thing.

    Regards

  • Hi Keith,
Can you name them, I saw them all and can't clearly name what is ok one and what is the poor.
You became very strict in charge of films last time.
    Regards,
    Vera

  • Hi Vera,
    Not strict!!! just my thoughts,
I thought the good ones were,

    McLINTOCK
    THE UNDEFEATED
    CHISUM

    The OK one was,
    CAHILL: U.S. MARSHAL

    and the poor one was,
    HELLFIGHTERS

  • One of my Christmas gifts was a set of all six seasons of The Adventures of Superman - you know, the one from back in the fifties, starring George Reeves.

Anyway, episode 13 of season 1 has as the bad guy's girlfriend, Veda Ann Borg. She was, as you can see above, married to Andrew McLaglen. She was also in Big Jim McLain, as the blonde who referred to JW's character as "76" (as in 76 inches aka 6 ft. 4 in.). One more connection between Mr. McLaglen's wife and JW - she played Blind Nell Robertson in The Alamo!

  • I just got word that Andrew V. McLaglen, director in a lot of John Wayne movies has died on August 31, 2014. He was 94 years old. I found this in a newspaper from where he lived. http://www.sanjuanjournal.com/news/273668601.html So sad to see him go.

R.I.P. Andrew. You directed so many great pictures, like McLintock!, Chisum, Cahill, U.S. Marshal.

    Cheers  Hondo Duke Lane

  • I learned today of the passing of one of the last men dedicated to the western film and a collaborator with Duke on many of his best efforts, including my favorite film The Quiet Man. Rest in Peace Andrew, may the angels take you into Paradise.

"I have tried to live my life so that my family would love me and my friends respect me. The others can do whatever the hell they please."

  • I like most of his work. I'll watch today ''Chisum'' to honor his memory. One of my fave Duke movies.

    Rest In Peace.

Break the law and he's the last man you want to see. And the last you ever will.
