    Trivia
    * Bing Crosby's cameo marked his final acting appearance in a film
(his remaining appearances would be in documentaries).

Last theatrical release that Bob Hope ever starred in.

Cancel My Reservation was not a success at the box office and was panned by critics.
Hope and his wife Dolores attended the film's premiere at Radio City Music Hall
in New York City (incidentally during a strike by the Musicians' Union,
which prevented the band or the Rockettes from performing)
and he reputedly bemoaned that he was getting too old to play
a leading man and therefore would not make another feature film,
although he would make cameo appearances in later films.

This was the final movie of Bob Hope with Bing Crosby,
released ten years after The Road to Hongkong (1962).

  • This is a pretty ropey Bob Hope film!
Over the years, Bob had made some great films, but towards the end,
the formula was looking tired, and this was no exception.
Cancel My Reservation is a 1972 comedy film
starring Bob Hope and Eva Marie Saint,
    and directed by Paul Bogart.
The ironically entitled movie was Bob Hope's last of over 50 theatrical features
as leading man, a screen run begun in 1938.
The movie was an effort by Hope to try a dramatic instead of a comedic role.

In this one, Duke has a small cameo role.
I haven't seen the film in years, but recall,
seeing Bob Hope in a prison cell, looking dejected with his plight,
and saying words to the effect,

    Quote

Where's John Wayne, when you need him?

to which Duke appears ,mystically in the cell with Bob, and says,

    Quote

I'd like to help ya, but it just ain't my movie!

And that was it folks, short but sweet!

It would appear this one liner of Duke's was wa-a-a-a-ay better than his,

Truly, this man was the son of God.

This film is NOT readily available anywhere, not even on ebay. Anybody know where we can get a copy  ?

Oops! I take that back, after checking Amazon. After checking there, I see it is available on VHS - for a price. Used, two copies available right now, for either $12.75 or $20 (NOT including shipping).

  • Cancel My Reservation is apparently now available on DVD as part of The Bob Hope Collection: Volume Two along with The Great Lover (1949), Paris Holiday (1958), The Private Navy of Sgt. O'Farrell (1968), How to Commit Marriage (1969), and Son of Paleface (1952).

I have 5 of those movies, but I have always wanted Cancel My Reservation. Besides these should be in much better shape then the old BCI eclipse versions I have

    Thanks for the heads up.

  • Hi Everyone,

I just noticed a Bob Hope DVD box set was released, which includes the movie Cancel My Reservation, which The Duke makes an appearance in...

I'm picking it up today. Another movie on official DVD :) The amount of movies not available for retail purchase on official DVD is slowly dwindling down.

    Best of all, it's 6 movies on 3 DVD's for about 20 bucks...not a bad deal.

    Enjoy,
