  • In Old Oklahoma is a 1943 American Western film starring John Wayne, Martha Scott,
Albert Dekker, George "Gabby" Hayes, Marjorie Rambeau,
    and Dale Evans.
The movie was directed by Albert S. Rogell and is usually shown
under the alternative title War of the Wildcats, its re-release name.
The film was nominated for two Academy Awards,
one for Music Score of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture
and the other for Sound Recording (Daniel J. Bloomberg).

Duke squares up to Albert Dekker, in this satisfactory oater,
with Gabby Hayes, as usual, giving brilliant support..
The studio gave the film expensive trappings, loading the sets, with anything
they could get their hands on.
The film climaxed with dozens of oil-laden wagons racing towards the refinery,
despite brush fires, and all the other dastardly obstacles, the villains, put in their paths.

    The NYTimes said,

    Quote

Wayne is as convincing as a knock-out punch

Even though it seemed a harmless western, the film, got bogged down
with ideological landmines, to do with the treatment of Indians etc.
However the studios ignored all the fuss, and turned in a successful film,
making it Republic's only picture to break into that years, top grossers list.

Duke was singled out for his performance in the film,
    with one reviewer, saying

    Quote

they had never seen him better

This was the Wayne Republic wanted America to see and hear about:
    Sincere, Truthful, Manly.

Gem of a John Wayne Film
    20 November 2003 | by robjdelaney (Italy)

This a John Wayne film like no other. Take it from a huge fan that's seen most of his movies. Although this not classified as a comedy, the Duke's turns in a sly performance full of great one-liners and facial expressions that had me rolling. Its action adventure in the oil fields and it's very entertaining and fun. Wayne is Cowboy Dan Somers and he competes with oilman Jim Gardner for oil lease rights on Indian land in Oklahoma, as well as for the attentions of schoolteacher turned scandalous book author Cathy Allen. It has a good supporting cast including George "Gabby" Hayes. You will never see the Duke quite like this in any other role. If you're a fan of the Duke, you will love this film. It was originally titled "In Old Oklahoma" and then reissued as "War of the Wildcats".

  • This is one of those titles that is difficult (maybe impossible) to get. We checked Amazon (which said "THIS TITLE IS CURRENTLY NOT AVAILABLE. If you would like to purchase this title, we recommend that you occasionally check this page to see if it has become available.), Deep Discount DVD, Critic's Choice Video, ebay (which had a nice selection of memorabilia related to the movie), and Bygone Video (http://www.bygonevideo.com), and NObody had it. If anybody else has had success in finding a source for this movie, let us know.

  • I see the UK DVD of In Old Oklahoma has some scenes not in the American VHS issued by Republic. For example, early in the film Martha Scott says to Wayne, "Only hired girls put on their gloves in public." That scene got snipped in the US version, including a short scene even earlier where a bit player says, "I'm gonna get me a gal with yeller [yellow] hair." A short scene with Wayne was also cut.

I'm shocked the Brits would allow such foul language and not tone down things with cuts like the Americans.

Seriously, I was curious why the running times between the two versions vary slightly (20 seconds or so), and now I see why. I wonder if the pending RC1 release of the film will include the same cuts....

  • I've bought some of the movies from the bygonevideos website. He's pretty willing to put it on any format you want. He's taking them from 16mm film and burning them using the same kind of burner I use.

  • The first part is highly enjoyable, Hunk trying to besiege Cat, and Dan constantly coming between them. Dekker is very good in these not-so-bad bad guy roles. The run for the oil delivery post is too much, how many wagons and barrels they loose and still fulfill their agreement?

    I don't believe in surrenders.

Yeah, we noticed that too. It seemed like they lost more oil than they started out with, and yet arrived with plenty to spare!

Have to love Gabby in these films though....other than him, War of Wildcats is basically the same as In Old California, except its oil, instead of gold.

"...all of this and General Price that baby sister makes it back to Yell county" --Rooster Cogburn, True Grit.

  • Another thought I had about this film, was that they portrayed a sitting president (T.R.) as a character in the film.

Question: Are there any other Wayne films that has as one of its characters the president of the U.S.? I cannot think of any others.

"...all of this and General Price that baby sister makes it back to Yell county" --Rooster Cogburn, True Grit.

  • This has always been one of my favorites because it references my home town. I don't think there was ever another movie that was staged, or even mentiones it.

Have to say the scenery was all wrong though, that and it wouldn't take about about an hour to haul a wagon from there to the refineries in Tulsa. Have to chuckle about that.

Even so, it's a fun film!

"I have tried to live my life so that my family would love me and my friends respect me. The others can do whatever the hell they please."

  • Eh... those type of mistakes have never bothered like that on line from Batman Forever.....

    Quote

Bruce Wayne: I want to live my life for me, I am tired of helping strangers I've never met

that line probably makes sense but I always get nasty towards the screen when that happens..

  • This film (titled as "War of the Wildcats") is showing several times until the end of the month on Encore Westerns...I TIVO'd it and made a disc and watched it the other night. Pretty clear copy.

  • Interesting movie, this one, with it's reissue title.

Here are two posters. The second one is a 1959 reissue poster, with the reissue title.

Interestingly enough, the second one is entirely different, and the original is the same as the one in Keith's introductory post, with the exception of the title (well, the coloring is different, too). I like the original one much better.
