    Plot Summary
Laurent van Horn is the leader of a band of Dutch refugees on a ship seeking freedom in the Carolinas, when the ship is wrecked on the coast of Cartagene. governed by Don Juan Alvardo, Spainish ruler. Alvarado has Laurent thrown in prison, but the latter escapes, and five-years later is a pirate leader. He poses as the navigator on a ship in which Contessa Francesca, daughter of a Mexican noble, is traveling on her way to marry Alvarado, whom she has never seen. Laurent's pirates capture the ship and Francesa, in order to save another ship, gives her hand-in-marriage to Laurent, who sails her to the pirate hideout. This irks the jealous Anne Bonney and, also, Captain Benjamin Black, who was already irked, anyway. They overpower Laurent and send Francesa to Alvarado, and then Mario du Billar, trusted right-hand man, makes a deal to deliver Laurent to Alvarado also. Written by Les Adams

  • The Spanish Main starred Paul Henreid, Maureen O'Hara,
    Walter Slezak and Binnie Barnes,
    and directed by Frank Borzage.
It was RKO's first all-Technicolor film since Becky Sharp ten years before.
Cinematographer George Barnes received an Academy Award
    nomination for Best Color Cinematography.
Though a box office hit upon its first release,
the film is largely forgotten today, despite occasional airings
on cable stations such as Turner Classic Movies.

    Not readily available this one.
A great swashbuckling film, with Maureen
    looking incredible.
A great performance from her and Paul Henreid ,
with a great character actor,Walter Slezak.
    putting in a fine performance.
Binne Barnes is in there too, as a woman pirate.
Beautiful gowns, and a great musical score,
    with some great duelling.
Note also, Robert Fellows, Duke's friend
and co-producer, was also involved in this.
This is a good all round family film.

I saw this on TV TCM today and will always enjoy the exciting story of the Spanish Main; with beautiful musical score and scenes rather well staged. Maureen O'Hara and Paul Henried are great! The scene stealer of course is that great character actor Walter Slezak, who plays a mean egocentric governor, but who gets it in the end. The duelling scenes are particularly good, and Paul Henried does a good job duelling. Binnie Barnes, who I remember so well in early films was especially great as a woman pirate

  • This has always been one of my favorite action-adventure movies. Like you said, great performances by all. Binnie Barnes character, Anne Bonney, was a real person. There actually was an Anne Bonney and she was a pirate along with some other woman, whose name I forget. I saw this on the History Channel about a year ago.

  • I saw her last night in a Pirate movie called: The Spanish Main?

Anyway, I cought most of it and it was a greatly enjoyable movie much unlike the one that followed as it was also a stinkin musical.

  • Maureen O' Hara playing a spanish contessa was a stretch of the imagination.
With that said she could have played a stick of wood and I still would have fallen in love with her.

''baby sister i was born game and intend to go out that way.''

  • Hi Bill, Amen to that ;-)) I have always thought a great deal about her and she was one I had a crush on when I was younger-same goes for Olivia de Havilland, Mae West and a few others ;-))

Cheers Keith for placing my post about it in this thread. I had not known there was a thread about this movie? and didnt have time to do any searching for it thanks to being forced to use the 15 minute timed computes at the library.

  • October 1944, started shooting with the Austrian actor Paul Henreid. It's practically on the plateau that has materialized, with John Ford, the future filming of the legendary "The Quiet Man" ...

    Thank you Paula.

Very good idea to release a new DVD provided that the overall quality wins.
Personally, I would say that the drawing of the couple Maureen - Paul is not successful. We do not recognize Paul Henreid. Maybe the designer has not seen the movie! (I'm bad!)

  • Just today: The Spanish Main w/ Maureen O'Hara, Paul Henreid, Walter Slezak, MIKE MAZURKI and Barton Maclane.

It was a pretty good movie and if you like Pirates vs the Spaniards type movies--this one is for you. Maureen O'Hara stole the show IMO.

Maureen has shot this film shortly after the birth of her daughter.
During the filming, John Ford came to see Maureen on the set to propose to star in an upcoming film, become famous, "The Quiet Man". Maureen accepted the proposal, but the film was shot seven years after ...
