    Trivia

    * In the early 1960s when TV-western mania reached its peak, an American magazine sponsored a contest for the actors who portrayed western heroes and villains. Since the climactic moment of so many shows was the classic quick-draw shoot-out, the actors had to acquire that skill to play their scenes. The magazine held a competition among some of the stars of the shows, firing blanks, aiming not at each other but downrange, and using an electronic timer. Quite a number of cowboy stars showed up to slap leather. Peter Brown beat them all and won the title of the fastest gun in Hollywood.

    * John Russell was only 37 - and looked even younger than that - when he was cast in this series. He believed that in order for a man like Dan Troop to have gained the kind of experience and maturity he possessed he would have had to have been in at least his mid-40s, so Russell had the makeup department streak gray through his hair and he lowered his voice when he spoke in order to appear several years older.

  • Lawman is an American western television series originally telecast on ABC from 1958 to 1962
starring John Russell as Marshal Dan Troop and featuring Peter Brown as Deputy Marshal Johnny McKay.
The series was set in Laramie, Wyoming during 1879 and the 1880s.
Warner Bros. already had several western series on the air at the time,
having launched Cheyenne with Clint Walker as early as 1955.
The studio continued the trend in 1957 with the additions of Maverick with James Garner and Jack Kelly,
Colt .45 with Wayde Preston, and Sugarfoot with Will Hutchins.
One year later, Warner Bros. added Lawman and Bronco with Ty Hardin.

Prior to the beginning of production, Russell and Brown and producer Jules Schermer
made a pact to maintain the quality of the series so that it would not be seen as "just another western."
At the start of season two, Russell and Brown were joined by Peggie Castle as Lily Merrill,
the owner of the Birdcage Saloon, and a love interest for Dan. In its last season,
Lawman was the lead-in on ABC for Marilyn Maxwell's unsuccessful series Bus Stop,
which failed to compete successfully with NBC's Bonanza.

    One of my favourites.
I thought John Russell, portrayed a good steady Marshall.
A Marshall with a difference, as there was love interest in the form of Lily,
similar in a way to Matt Dillion, and Kitty, of Gunsmoke

John Russell, also starred with Duke in
Rio Bravo (1959) as Nathan Burdette.

One of the Directors, Burt Kennedy was involved with Duke,
    in
    The Train Robbers (1973)
    The War Wagon (1967)
The Alamo (1960) (production associate) (uncredited)

A series, well worthy of release on DVD

  • ethanedwards,
    Thanks for posting Lawman.
One of my favorite TV Westerns too.
John Russel was seen in John Ford's The Sun Shines Bright that is
    my all-time favourite movie.

Sometimes kids ask me what a pro is. I just point to the Duke.
    ~Steve McQueen~

  • Another thing Russell had in common with Duke. They both appeared in a movie about the Alamo. Russell played Almeron Dickinson in The Last Command, which was Republics version of the famous battle which the Republic studio boss "borrowed" from Dukes idea.

  • One of my favoeite westerns, I'm enjoying the repeats on Encore's Western Channel.

Maj. Amos Dundee: I have only three commands. When I signal you to come, you come. When I signal you to charge, you charge. And when I signal you to run - you follow me and run like *hell*!
