Born Jan. 25, 1927, as Palmer Lee in San Francisco, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and became a cryptographer during World War II. Following his discharge in 1946, Palmer held various jobs until 1950, when he was cast as an ambulance attendant in the Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis film "My Friend Irma Goes West."

After a few bit parts in films, Palmer appeared in an episode of the syndicated Western TV series "Stories of the Century."

He went on to specialize in Westerns on screens both big and small. His films included "Son of Cochise," "Five Guns to Tombstone," "Rio Lobo," "The Shootist" and "The Virginian."

Palmer, who stood 6 feet four, played roles on a slew of TV Westerns, including "Wagon Train," "Gunsmoke," "Bonanza" and "Death Valley Days."

In a 2013 interview with The Examiner's Jeremy Roberts, Palmer attributed his acting success to preparation.

  • David Canary died.

David Canary, known for his nearly three-decade stint on the ABC soap All My Children, died November 16 from natural causes, his family has announced. He was 77.

Born in Elwood, Indiana in 1938, Canary’s acting career began with a recurring role as Dr. Russ Gehrig on Peyton Place in 1965. He would soon go on to portray ranch manager Candy Canaday on the long-running NBC Western Bonanza, a role he held off and on from 1967 to 1973. A string of appearances on television shows from the era followed, including guest roles on Hawaii Five-0, Alias Smith and Jones, and S.W.A.T..

In the early 80s, Canary joined the soap opera world, portraying Steve Frame for two years on NBC’s Another World. But it was his next job, as diametrically opposite twins Adam Chandler and Stuart Chandler on ABC’s All My Children, that he was best known for. Canary played the roles from 1984 until 2011, including in a guest spot as Adam Chandler on One Life To Live. He won five Daytime Emmy outstanding actor awards and 16 nominations for the roles.

He largely retired in 2010 but continued to act sporadically, including several post-retirement appearances on All My Children. In addition, Canary continued to associate himself with his Bonanza role well into his career, making several appearances at the Lake Tahoe site of the show’s Ponderosa ranch between 1967 and 2004, and reprising the role for a PAX-TV special in 2002. Other TV appearances include Law & order, Touched By An Angel, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

He was married to Maureen Maloney; the couple had two children, son Chris and Daughter Kate.

  • Natalie Cole Died

Chart-topping R&B singer Natalie Cole, who followed her legendary father into the music business with hits like “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)” and “Unforgettable,” died at age 65.

“Natalie Cole, sister beloved & of substance and sound. May her soul rest in peace,” tweeted the Rev. Jesse Jackson on New Year’s Day.

Cole, who had struggled with a variety of health issues in recent years, died Thursday night, according to publicist Maureen O’Connor. The cause of death was reportedly congestive heart failure.

A physically weakened Cole, winner of nine Grammy Awards, was forced to cancel a string of concert performances over the last three months after a recurrence of hepatitis C linked to her earlier drug abuse.

The daughter of music icon Nat (King) Cole scored a huge 1991 hit with “Unforgettable” — a virtual duet with her late father. Natalie was just 15 when her father died in 1965, a decade before his daughter launched her own solo recording career.

The album “Unforgettable ... With Love” spent five weeks at No. 1 on the pop charts, sold more than 14 million copies worldwide and won six Grammy Awards.
