  • DUKE'S DOCUMENTARIES
    Part 1

JOHN WAYNE: American Legend (90 mins)
    Producer Kerry Jensen/Van Ness Films.(1998)

A superb biography of Duke, with rare personal photographs, and interviews.
In 1939, director John Ford cast John Wayne in Stagecoach, and a legend was born.
Welcomed to the ranks of A-list actors, he made a series of westerns and adventures during World War II
and became the idealized American hero. In a career spanning more than five decades,
Wayne epitomized the straight-talking, no-nonsense characters that made him a true Hollywood legend both on screen and off.

ON BOARD WITH THE DUKE: John Wayne and The Wild Goose (68 mins)
    Bert Minshall/ Clark Sharon (1995 )

Of all the documentary's on John Wayne, my favorite is still "On Board with the Duke",now that one
    will moisten up your eyes...chester7777

A remarkable film that includes never seen before, home movies,
    rare photographs and interviews.
It is about John Wayne, the private man,
as only a few of his friends saw him,
    At play, exploring ports-of-call,
from Alaska to Mexico, at home in Newport Beach,
aboard his 136-foot former U.S. minesweeper,
    The Wild Goose

THE AMERICAN WEST OF JOHN FORD(68 mins)

    Directed by Denis Sanders

Hosted and Narrated by John Wayne,
    Henry Fonda, and James Stewart,
    this documentary pays homage to
    'The guy who made westerns'
Duke joins John Ford in Monument Valley,
    which also features, Andy Devine.
Includes many clips from the films,
    made there with Ford.

A worthwhile documentary, and a must have.

JOHN WAYNE: Bigger Than Life(55 mins)
    (1990)

This documentary pays homage, to Duke
throughout is life, showing rare footage

Personally, I thought it was just about OK!!!

PLIMPTON! SHOOTOUT AT RIO LOBO (50 mins)
    William Kronick and George Plimpton.(1970)

This rare documentary, made during the actual
Old Tucson Location shooting of Rio Lobo,
follows journalist George Plimpton, from his arrival
on set, to his first meeting with 'The Duke'
and his off-set training, so that he can effectively
deliver his one line, minus his Harvard accent!

The results are hilarious, and show the humorous
'mickey-taking' that Duke and his supporting cast
(Jack Elam, Victor French, David Huddlestone
and Jennifer O'Neil) were so skilled at

George finds out the best way to acquire
    a Western drawl,and a western walk,
who better to learn from then Duke!!!

This is a must have doc, not to be missed.

    This was telecast only once.

    Features;-
Original behind the scenes featurette and trailers
    Rare production stills and posters
Information about John Wayne Fan clubs, and the Jimmy Stewart Museum

I personally thought this was great,
and certainly one of the better ones.
    By ethanedwards

With the deluge of repackaged public domain videos relating to John Wayne
(i.e the 1000th release of "Angel and the Badman"), it's terrific to experience a truly rare film tribute
to both the Duke and Jimmy Stewart. This is an outstanding tape in every way.
It offers a glimpse into Wayne's unapologetic views on patriotism and the political climate in the world (circa 1971)
as well as taking an in-depth look at the making of Wayne's great western "The Cowboys".
There is also a very entertaining interview with Jimmy Stewart, who is seen on the set of "Fool's Parade",
his last major starring role. As with other titles put out by Spy Guise Video, this one does a great job
of including some extraordinary bonus material including some trailers, original t.v spots for "The Shootist"
(which starred both actors), great still photographs, and other bonus shorts.
Highly recommended not only for Wayne and Stewart fans, but also for movie lovers in general.

JOHN WAYNE: Behind the Scenes With the Duke
Produced by Chris Andersen and Ron Plesniarski.( 1997 )

Features rare production shorts from Duke's films,

McLintock!, The War Wagon, In Harm's Way
    El Dorado, McQ, Brannigan,
    The Cowboys, The Undefeated,
    and The Train Robbers.

    Bonus:-
    Memorable charity commercial appearances,
behind the scenes trailer for The Shootist

An exciting collection of never-before-released original production shorts featuring the legendary John Wayne.
Go behind the scenes with Duke and view rare footage from "McLintock!", "In Harm's Way", "The War Wagon",
"El Dorado", "McQ", "Brannigan", "The Cowboys", and others. A fascinating look at how these classic Wayne movies were made.
See Wayne interacting with his co-stars and directors while on location. Bonus:
original t.v. commercials and public service announcements featuring John Wayne. These films have not been seen in decades.

This video features John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, Robert Mitchum, Otto Preminger, Richard Attenborough,
    Maureen O'Hara, James Stewart.

THE JOHN WAYNE STORY:The Early Years (84 mins)
    Mike Eagan (Actor)( 2001)

Follow the Duke from the Sagebrush Trail to the Sands of Iwo Jima in this documentary full of blazing sixshooters,
interviews, and other highlights, with rare photos and scenes from more than forty movies.
Born Marion Morrison in a small town outside Des Moines, Iowa, on May 26, 1907,
Wayne embodied the larger-than-life, patriotic heroes of American legend onscreen for fifty years, from 1927 to 1976.
His long association with John Ford paid off when "Pappy" directed his breakthrough hit, Stagecoach,
after the Duke had spent a decade laboring in the Hollywood vineyards of "B" Westerns and serials.
A string of successes followed: Reap the Wild Wind, Flying Tigers, Fort Apache, Red River,
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Rio Grande, The Quiet Man, and his Oscar-nominated rose as Sergeant Stryker.

The John Wayne Story: The Early Years chronicles the early life and success of the legendary Western icon
who was born Marion Morrison. The film surveys his early life in Iowa, his rough beginning years
when he starred in B-movie after B-movie, and the beginning of his worldwide fame with the success
of John Ford's seminal Western Stagecoach. The film utilizes a variety of interviews,
still photographs, and film clips to tell its story.

THE JOHN WAYNE STORY:The Later Years (87 mins)
    (1993/ 2001)

A nice little DVD concentrating on John Wayne films between Big Jim Mc Lain to The Shootist is John Wayne Later Years.

It is around 87 minutes in length and is Region Free available from Play.com and on Ebay.
There is also an Early Years DVD which deals with films up to late 1940s/1950s

Most of the DVD is clips and trailers from most of those movies. Quality varies between clips
but the selling point of this DVD to me is the other rare footage of Duke that is also included.

The unusual stuff is as follows:-
Talking about Rio Bravo with Dean Martin on the Dean Martin Show
Gunsmoke Promo for TV Series and tribute by James Arness to John Wayne
Red Cross Promo from set of Trouble Along The Way
Christamas Seals Appeal from set of Blood Alley
Barbarian & The Geisha promo selling it vitrues!!!
TV ad with Patrick Wayne for Gillette razor
    American Cancer Society appeal
Footage of his arrival at 1970 Oscars, talking with Bob Hope and his Acceptance Speech for True Grit
1970 Special with Raquel Welch at Mexican Orphanage
Footage of the making of Brannigan
Bank ad for Great Western Savings in 1977

    It is well worth buying

voiced by Peter Rainer. Its most precious elements are color home movies of Wayne and Ford

One of the most insightful things ever said about the film comes from Milius,
at about the 16-minute mark, which viewers are invited to discover on their own.

    THE SEARCHERS AN APPRECIATION (30:58)
    John Milius/ Martin Scorsese/ Curtis Hanson>(1956/ 1998)

Three directors, John Milius, Martin Scorsese, and Curtis Hanson, track their relationship
with the film and explicate its fine points. The image is widescreen and enhanced.
Frankly, one gets more out of this than Bogdanovich's audio track. It's heart-wrenching to hear
Milius wax so eloquently about The Searchers, as his career achievement could easily be comparable to Ford's,
were it not for a vague, unofficial blackballing of the man in Hollywood due to his politics.
This featurette is credited only to Sparkhill Productions and copyrighted 2006.

    The History of Western Cinema.
Out of a cloud of dust and across the silver screen we all sat enthralled
as the American West came to life in the movies.
From the very beginning audiences came to love the "old West",
even though what we saw up on the screen did not always represent
the "real West". Cowboys and Indians, good guys and bad guys entertained
us. It was, and remains, one of the most popular film genres ever,
even though the heyday of the Western has long past.
In five one-hour episodes, Golden Saddles, Silver Spurs
recounts the history of Western Cinema, from the very beginning,
through to the waning of its popularity in the mid-1950's,
when television began to bring this genre into our homes
    on a regular weekly basis.

HOLLYWOOD BIOGRAPHIES: The Leading Men (1250 mins)
    (2006)

This DVD set on the Leading Men, as well as the companion set on Leading Ladies, are done exactly the same, on the cheap. Using public domain footage from movie trailers, old movies and tv shows and some ameatur footage taken of the more recent stars, the quality of this set is poor. This is basically a DVD release of a VHS series of the 1990s called "Hollywood Remembers," and using the exact same footage. Photos, when used in this documentary, are filmed out of books or magazines...very poor quality all around. DO NOT expect A&E type Bios here.

Dashing Errol Flynn! Handsome Paul Newman! Versatile Jack Nicholson! Hollywood Biographies: The Leading Men is a fascinating 5-disc set of half-hour profiles spotlighting the personal lives and extraordinary careers of fifty legendary Hollywood leading men.

    NO SUBSTITUTE FOR VICTORY.(80 Mins)
John Wayne(Host) Robert F. Slatzer (Director) Mark W. Clark (Narrator) (1970)

The Communist threat and its zenith in Vietnam is the focus of this video hosted by John Wayne
with interviews of Lowell Thomas and Sgt. Barry Sadler.

Another political documentary DVD that involved John Wayne was No Substitute for Victory
which was primarily about the war being fought in Vietnam at the time and delves into the links
with previous conflicts from 1945 to 1970. John Wayne provides the narration links between
interviewees such as General Clarke, Vietnam Veterans and journalists like Lowell Thomas.

At 73 minutes it is interesting to watch and most of the Wayne links are filmed in his den

THE CHALLENGE OF IDEAS (30 Mins)
    John Wayne (Host).(1961)

Various celebrities and news-media figures discuss the polarization of politics
between the Western Allies of the United States and the Soviet bloc,
pointing out the need for vigilance and action to protect democracy in the U.S. and abroad.
    Written by Jim Beaver

The Challenge of Ideas is an amazing vintage film that features John Wayne, Edward R. Murrow,
Helen Hayes, Frank McGee, and Lowell Thomas all making separate speeches defending the American way of life
and capitalism or denouncing the Soviet Union.
The journalist hero Murrow sits behind his desk, smoking, while images of the military roll by.
John Wayne sits in a director's chair, smoking and talking about how Americans appreciate "beauty"
while images of female wrestlers, beauty queens, and women on the beach are shown.
All of the narration is aimed at promoting the idea that God was on America's side and the Commies
are a bunch of thugs who want to rule the country someday.
The film captures various patriotic images throughout each speech, including footage of the Liberty Bell,
folks square dancing, factory assembly lines, schools, and the Statue of Liberty.
There are also many scenes from the Soviet Union, including Moscow, Joseph Stalin,
Khrushchev, and tanks in Red Square.
This is a superb 1960's film with unparalleled cultural icons.

Introduced by Vice-President Hubert Humphrey and hosted on camera by John Wayne, this Defense Department film describes the Vietnamese social revolution, in which the South Vietnamese Government is trying to improve the health and welfare of the people and build a nation. Individual US soldiers explain how America is helping this effort. Footage includes Saigon street scenes, peasant life, Seabees construction projects, sailors teaching carpentry to Vietnamese children, and the training and village operations of revolutionary development cadres.

Propaganda documentary account of the South Vietnamese social revolution and the ways in which the United States attempted to help the Vietnamese populace modernize and defend their country.

CHESTY: A Tribute to a Legend
John Ford (Director) John Wayne narrator/ Host) (1970/ 1976)

John Ford's tribute to the United States Marine's most decorated soldier is virtually unknown.
The production was a cheap one and the majority of the film is made up of combat footage
from World War II and the Korean War.

Ford appears in the film interviewing General Puller, both of these old guys
are as stiff as a couple of boards.
Narrated by John Wayne in his cowboy costume, the whole thing seems outdated
and a little out of it.

When this documentary/tribute was filmed, the country was in the coma of the Vietnam War.
The general public probably wasn't in any mood for a tribute to tough marines.

Chesty: A Tribute to a Legend, is interesting for the war footage that Ford incorporated.
The scenes of the Korean War, are more fascinating than the stuff Ford filmed for his terrible documentary This is Korea.

This film isn't particularly well made and with the exception of the marching bands
and the usual military ritual stuff it would be impossible to tell that it was directed by Ford.

Serving in the navy during World War II had been the pivotal point in Ford's life,
so it's not unexpected that Chesty: A Tribute to a Legend,
is more about Ford's fascination with military life and ritual.

DIRECTED BY JOHN FORD (110 mins)
John Ford (Actor), Peter Bogdanovich (Actor), Peter Bogdanovich (Director) (1971/2009)

    Amazon.com
For years, Peter Bogdanovich's 1971 documentary Directed by John Ford stood as an impeccable work of auteurist enthusiasm: Bogdanovich, before his own directing career hit its early peak, assembled a loving tribute to the American cinema's towering figure. In 2006, Bogdanovich re-imagined the film for Turner Classic Movies, adding new interview footage with, among others, Martin Scorsese, Clint Eastwood, and himself. The result is something of a hybrid (and a curious experience for fans of the 1971 picture): the meat of the original film--complete with narration by Orson Welles--remains, but garnished with newish shot-on-video comments from a more distant perspective. Bogdanovich's own hilariously frustrated interview with John Ford is still prominently featured, with the sly Ford avoiding/denying his interlocutor's earnest questions. The superbly chosen clips have room to illustrate the uncanny poetry of Ford's art (such a pleasure to watch among the quick-cut tribute montages of the present day), and Bogdanovich highlights the emphasis on rituals in Ford's work and his many treatments of American history. Among the new interviewees is Steven Spielberg, who offers a marvelous anecdote about a youthful meeting with Ford (the old director's advice is priceless and extremely smart). Bogdanovich also includes a somewhat voyeuristic audiotape of a final meeting between Katharine Hepburn and the sickly Ford, strongly implying that she may have been the love of the director's life. The best stories come from Ford's old guard, notably John Wayne, Henry Fonda, and James Stewart, all of whom seem to take particular pleasure in telling Ford tales--and acting them out. By most accounts (including theirs) John Ford could be difficult, cruel, exasperating. And they're all utterly devoted to him. --Robert Horton
    Product Description
Peter Bogdanovich's 1971 documentary about legendary director John Ford has been recut with new interview footage and restructured with added anecdotes, insights, and observations for this special release. Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Katharine Hepburn, and many others offer remarks about Ford and how the man who made "Stagecoach" and many other classics affected them personally and professionally. 110 min.

    AMERICAN MASTERS:John Ford/John Wayne:
The Filmmaker and The Legend. (97 mins)
Directed by Sam Ballard. Narrated by Sydney Pollack (2006 )

John Ford is considered by many America's greatest director - winner of six Academy Awards,
more than any director before or since. John Wayne is the actor whom he transformed
    from a B-western cowboy into a larger-than-life national icon.
Their friendship and professional collaboration spanned 50 years, changed each other's lives,
changed the movies and, in the process, changed how America saw itself.

Their remarkable body of work - including Stagecoach, Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon,
Rio Grande, The Searchers, The Horse Soldiers, The Alamo and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
    - is heroic and nostalgic, reflecting all the elements and all the paradoxes in
20th-century America: generosity of spirit, abuse of power, a sense of loyalty and a new, restless nationalism.

Featuring interviews with Ford biographers, filmmakers (including Martin Scorsese, Peter Bogdanovich,
and many more), and the two men's offspring, this is a fascinating look at their personal as well as professional relationship.
Their politics, personalities, and everything else you can think of is touched upon in this Sydney Pollack-narrated piece.
I highly recommend this to anyone who wishes to learn more about these two men.

    Christopher Bird/ Kevin Brownlow.(Directors)Alec Baldwin.(Narrator) (2005)

Includes archive footage of Duke Wayne as Ethan Edwards,
    John Ford and many others

A chronological celebration of the life and contributions to movies of Merian C. Cooper (1893-1973), adventurer turned filmmaker. Tossed from the Naval Academy and wanting to make his father proud, he becomes a bomber pilot in World War I, assists the Polish resistance, escapes from a Soviet prison, and becomes a documentary filmmaker. He brings his camera close to stampeding elephants and lunging tigers. With "King Kong," he used stop-motion animation. Other innovations include his use of aviation in movie making and his embrace of Technicolor and Cinemascope. Archival interviews of Cooper and his partner, Monty Schoedsack, add to the soundtrack. Talking heads also comment.
    Written by jhailey

This is a most amazing documentary about Merian C Cooper, the man who created King Kong. Cooper's statement that he was King Kong was made when he described his life to the man who was helping put together his (unfinished) autobiography. It was not an idle boast since Cooper did more than 20 other normal people, from fighting in three wars, escaping from a Russian prison camp, making movies, running an airline, having a family, and on and on and on. This documentary about his life is a wonderful look at man little known to most people. Thats due, as one person says, to the fact that he was doing so much you could never get a hold of him. Done for Turner Classic Movies and on the new DVD release of King Kong, this is a must see documentary for anyone who loves movies, regardless of if you like King Kong or not. This is the story of a man that changed the face of not only the movies, but the world we know today. What he did, what he developed influences how we see the world and what we think America is (This goes for everyone in the world who has ever seen any of his films as well). This is a movie that will move you and make you wonder why someone hasn't made a movie about Cooper himself since it has more drama than 99% of the movies ever made.

The only flaw in the film, and the one thing that prevents me from giving it a 10 out of 10 is that after the film deals with King Kong the film loses sight of Cooper the man, instead focusing on his technical achievements. Cooper's life should have been told in twice the 57 minute running time. Its a minor flaw, that doesn't diminish the "Oh Wow!" factor, however it does increase the "I want more" factor by several degrees.

  • Hi Keith

I got my John Wayne the Duke Lives On: A Tribute. It is about 48 minutes in length.

It states it is 1980 RKO release although the video has 1989 from Turner Entertainment on it.

Quite a good video. the first 12 minutes takes from being born to Stagecoach with a lot of clips from his early movies.

Then follow a section on the roles he played after Stagecoach in the 1940s.

The bulk of the video concentrates on his war movies of Flying Tigers Sand of Iwo Jima, Flying Leathernecks and in particular the Ford westerns Fort Apache, Rio Grande, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and The Quiet Man .

No mention sightings of any of the Hawks movies or The Searchers!!

After this there are clips from attending political rallies in 1950s Liberty Bell etc and a 1970's Republican rally with Gerald Ford and the Brass Balls award at Harvard in 1974.

There are some clips from the Barbara Walters interview before his death and the 1979 Oscars.

Biggest blooper is the narrator saying that he lost out on an Academy Award for the second time for his role in The Quiet Man.

He is shown winning his Oscar in 1970 for True Grit and leaving the show with his academy award.

Print is good for a video but the colour in the colour clips are a little faded.

We own this video, and have nothing but praises for it! Just today, we got our copy of the book by the same name, as is indicated in the thread referenced above.

  • John Ford/John Wayne: The Filmmaker and The Legend. Absolutely superb DVD and documentary. Brilliant remastered material, rare footage and narrative from the Duke and wonderful well paced story.

One of the best documentary DVDs I have seen. Great insight into Ford character.

Andrew Mc Laglen is the spit of hi Da now.
