We wish to profile artists that we believe were in movies
that Duke had ultimate control in the selection of the cast and crew.

  • Thank you Keith for this updating of John Ford's list and how many films and TV shows each were in. Have you done one for John Wayne's Stock Co. or are you planning to? You Ford list is awesome, thanks again - Jim

Do we have a thread for the "John Wayne Stock Company"? Since Duke used many friends over and over, it could make an interesting list.

    Thanks both for mentioning this.
It is something I was considering after
    completing the JFSC.
You have also probably noticed that the term
    John Wayne Stock Company,
seems to be more regularly used.

Would like your feedback on this,
as my own thoughts would be to
consider all actors/stuntmen/ crew, used since
Duke formed John Wayne Productions/ Wayne-Fellows,
    and ultimately Batjac.

Therefore the movies made by those companies,
as in these productions, Duke had ultimate control
as to the cast lists and crew etc.

  • I think that's the best way to handle it, Ethan. I don't think that the films that featured Duke as only an actor would be germane. For example, "The Longest Day" and "The Greatest Story Ever Told" aren't relevant.
Sounds like you're going to be busy.

    We deal in lead, friend.

  • Great-thanks-I think John Agar and Jim Davis could be added to the list.

Thanks for these, they have now been added.

It's hard to spot them all on initial viewing of the casts,
so it's good to have extra eyes looking in!!

  • I'm not quite sure how the composers are selected for any given film, but I imagine that the producer has a say - it's his money. If so, maybe we should consider Elmer Bernstein and Dimitri Tiomkin as part of the stock company. Duke used them both several times.

Bill, I thought about including them,
and now that you have mentioned them, I have,
    Thanks

  • Thanks for your work, Keith.

Seems to me that anyone who was in Pappy's Troup should remain "his". Perhaps, when mentioning, JWST, you could make it an addendum to Pappy's. Or, if that isn't to yall's liking, Maybe you could list all of Duke's but with an asterisk or something that denotes they were originally part of the JFST. Also, I think that the ones Pappy directed should remain on his original list whether Batjac was involved or not. Duke got quite a few of his own after Pappy was no longer there. But Pappy developed the whole idea, and to me, he should receive full credit for the ones he directed. Just "feels" right to me.

God, she reminds me of me! DUKE

    Thank you, for your input.
I have indeed kept the two lists separate,
as although Duke used many of the JFSC
He also, after John Ford's passing,
    added his own favourites.

  • Just a note...Aissa appeared in The Alamo, The Commancheros, Donovan's Reef, and McLintock!

She should have a 4 by her name!

Aissa did appear in 4 movies with her father
but only The Alamo, and McLintock!
were his productions, which is the criteria used for this list.

  • A few more: Ed Faulkner, Tom Hennessey, Rudy Robbins, Mike Henry, Robert Donner, and Don Collier

  • A few more: Ed Faulkner, Tom Hennessy, Rudy Robbins, Mike Henry, Robert Donner, and Don Collier

    Thanks for mentioning
Ed Faulkner, Rudy Robbins and Tom Hennesy
and I have now included them.

    However
Mike Henry, Robert Donner, and Don Collier
didn't meet the criteria making, I believe only 1 movie
    each for Duke's productions

  • Donner was in El Dorado, Chisum, and I think Rio Lobo, Mike Henry Green Berets and Rio Lobo, Collier was in War Wagon, and The Undefeated-

Thanks so much for your input on this,
as it serves to make the list as definitive and accurate as possible.

However only The War Wagon, Chisum and The Green Berets,
    were Batjac Productions,
so all three only appeared in 1 each!
El Dorado and The Undefeated,as far as we know,
were not part of Duke's Batjac.

Robert Donner was in Chisum and Rio Lobo.
The problem being that Rio Lobo
doesn't appear to be credited to Batjac, although
the IMDb data base claims Batjac Productions (uncredited)

As Rio Lobo, was Produced and Directed by Howard Hawks,
are we to assume therefore that Hawks had complete control,
although we know Duke bullied him a little!!
There are also other parties credited with involvement
such as Malabar and Cinema Center Films .

    Unless something else confirms otherwise,
we cannot therefore assume that Duke, was in control of
the cast and crew of that film

Mike Henry was in The Green Berets, and Rio Lobo, and the above applies.

Mike Henry was in The War Wagon
