  • During the Duke’s unparalleled 50-year career in the movie industry, there were performances by supporting players (and, in a few instances, by people who were billed above Wayne in the credits) that I thought were truly memorable. Please list your personal favorites among the roles of all those who played in “John Wayne” movies over the years. To start things off, I’ll list my own favorite roles. (NOTE) I’m not including performances by players in “The Longest Day” or “How The West Was Won”, since Duke was, in effect, just one of many stars in those films.

    De gustibus non est disputandum

  • Stumpy,

Wow, that was a lot of work! :) Thank you for the effort - it puts it all in perspective.

I was glad to see They Were Expendable on that list.

One of my favorite actors in a supporting role to the Duke is Gabby Hayes.

Click HERE for another thread from about a year ago, about Gabby Hayes and his common movies with the Duke.

I have also come to enjoy Ward Bond with John Wayne. (HERE'S a link to a thread about Ward Bond.

If you want to read more on this board about Ward, click on Search and type in +ward +bond. You type in the plus sign in front of each word so that it will find posts with the phrase "ward bond" (i.e., both words, in that exact order).

  • I'll throw in a few lesser known ones, just for fun. I enjoyed Oliver Hardy's character in The Fighting Kentuckian. Forget Vera Ralston - Duke should have ridden off into the sunset with him.

I also liked Gabby Hayes in Tall in the Saddle and Dark Command. Roy Rogers was good in that one as well.

  • How about,

    Robert Stack as Captain Sullivan
    Clair Trevor as May Holst
    Laraine Day as Lydia Rice
    Jan Sterling as Sally McKee
    Davic Brian as Ken Childs

    The High & The Mighty

    And

    Andy Devine as Moon
    James Arness as McMullen
    Lloyd Nolan as Stutz
    Allyn Joslyn as Handy

  • Hi Hondo

When one thinks of supporting actors everyone goes for the side kicks or good guys and gals. How about a list of favourite baddies in John Wayne pictures most of them very good classical actors. I'm thinking for instance:

:agent: Raymond Massey - King Cutler
:( Charles Bickford - Captain of the Tyfib
    'Reap the Wild Wind'

 Luther Adler - Mayrant Ruysdaal Sidneye -
    'Wake of the Red Witch'

:( Walter Pidgeon - William Cantrell - Dark Command

:agent: James Gregory - Morgan Hastings - The Sons of Katie Elder

:cowboy: It seems that the baddies get very good meaty roles and I bet we've all got our favourite black hat guy :cowboy: .
