Posts from Hawkswill in thread „Last Non Western You Watched“

WAS READY TO POST THIS WHEN I WAS LOGGED OUT...WISH I HAD SAVED MORE OF IT.

THE 4TH WEEKEND I WATCHED AND REVELED IN YANKEE DOODLE DANDY WITH JAMES CAGNEY PLAYING THE MASTER OF SINGING, DANCING SONGWRITING, AND ACTING, GEORGE M, COHAN! IF YOU NEVER WATCHED THIS THINKING IT MIGHT BE A WIMPY MUSICAL TYPE....GIVE YOURSELF AND FAMILY A REAL TREAT! I WATCH IT EVERY 4TH AND ANYTIME ELSE I NEED A "PICKUP".

COHAN WROTE MANY SONGS TO HELP THE WAR EFFORT BUT TWO STILL STAND OUT...."OVER THERE" AND "THE GRAND OLD FLAG". CAGNEY, AN ALREADY QUITE FANTASTIC DANCER, WORKED UNTIL CAPTURING THE DISTINCTIVE "MARIONETTE" STYLE OF COHAN. HE SUCCEEDED SO WELL THAT HE WAS ABLE TO CREATE HIS VERY OWN COHAN ORIGINAL SCENE....CAGNEY'S OWN COHAN PIECE OF DANCEWORK!

THE STAIRCASE SCENE IS ONE AND IT IS ONE OF THE MOST REPEATED SCENES IN ALL MUSICALS.

HOPE IT WILL WORK HERE...DOES ALL OTHER PLACES.

THE WAY WEST 1967 starring Kirk Douglas, Robert Mitchum, and Richard Widmark and directed by Andrew McLaglen. A large cast including regulars such as Dobe Carey, John Mitchum, Jack Elam, Stubby Hayes, Sally Field and many other recognizables. Decent storyline but the production was great. Real conestoga wagons, oxen, not just horses, many complete character studies. The trip down the mountain to the stream bed was very realistic showing wagons, oxen and mules, and eventually people being lowered by rigs and block and tackle outfits. Stunt work included Jim Burk and Hal Needham among others. All in all a good film. Strange I never ran into it before. You can catch it on Youtube. KEITH Have some good pics....is there an easier way to post them Yet?

Charade (1963) - Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn

Nothing like a good old Cary Grant movie.

Watched this on release in a huge old theater.........believe it was the Fox in Atlanta. Our friend owned the Rialto I think, though,....might have been that one. They were our neighbors in Brookhaven...........Papa Mion............owned a large tile company. I was 13 and it was the first time I really noticed Cary Grant,............fell in love on the spot, LOL. The music is still haunting............great movie......KEITH

Jim, sorry for the delayed reply, our family has been BUSY with graduations (1 college and 1 high school) AND our son's Boy Scout Eagle Project . . .

We LOVE Secondhand Lions! We have seen (and own) every movie we have watched with the group, so for us at least, there are no surprises. We recommend that movie to many people (in fact, we had to replace our copy because we loaned it out and never got it back).

Don't even know Secondhand Lions.will have to read up on it. Netflix just put out the second season of Longmire..........probably be busy with that for a while. KEITH HI ALL

This is supposed to be a real bomb of Duke's. I liked it, LOL. I put that on here once, and I think it was Mark who said, "Surely you are kidding, Keith". Not sure if I got back to answer, but........Nope, wasn't kidding. I actually enjoyed the movie. But then, I liked The Conqueror also, so what the heck do I know!! I DIDN'T like his early Z westerns though...........except for Angel and the Badman......still like that one. KEITH,,,,,,,,,,,,,yep, really the Old Lady......turned 64 in April. ONE MORE YEAR for Medicare..........hope it is still there!

Watched the Winds of War....about my third time. But this time, I actually began to realize more what the times were like then. My Grandpa fought as an Army Captain in that one. Stellar cast. An older Peter Graves, for the first time REALLY reminded me of his brother James Arness...........very similar facial attributes, and even his voice sounded more like him........love them both.

And Marty. I believe that was the first role Ernie had played a Non Heavy.....not sure...........he had to read for the part. As Spencer Tracy told him.....you are a STAR, you don't have to read for parts. But this was a highly different role for Ernie. He got the part AND the Oscar for which Spencer was nominated also! Ernie died a few years ago. He was best friends with my friend, the comedian Marty Allen who just celebrated his 92 birthday...........keep on going Marty.....yep, he is still entertaining. Heh, if you didn't get residuals, as neither he nor his sometimes partner Steve Rossi didn't.......as Marty says.........."You just work until you die"! I think Marty's work is what keeps him alive! KEITH

Hi Tommy, I am waiting to see the first new episode of Gently from Peter, (Dooley). Have you seen Martin in the old Run the Gauntlet competition? He was head of one of the teams and actually DID a great deal of the stunts! Awesome! Would love it if you will send the pictures of the framed sketches to [email protected]. Can't wait to see them. Thanks.

Watched episode one of the new series of George Gently Saturday night, yes we are talking about the same Lewis, the Lewis I posted is the series that was set in Oxford England. The Professionals was a very good tv series let me know where to post the framed picture to.

Episode two of Lewis great British detective series but alas it as finished

I am totally and completely HOOKED on Martin Shaw who was partners with Lewis in The Professionals, (Peter says it was like a violent Starsky and Hutch, LOL!) This guy is incredible........My NEW HERO except for Ward......no one will ever replace him as my number one! You can see him as George Gently on Netflix now........they are doing another season at this time. He is also great in Judge John Deed.......most unusual type of judge and ardent womanizer, LOL. He has been working for forty years in British TV, Movies, and stage. Just saw him do a rather rugged show, in which he was a captain and actually DID the stunts.....and well, also. He and Lewis had a row, but got together again before Lewis died of cancer. Hmmmmm, Tommy, wonder if we are speaking of the same Lewis.....must be. Sure would LOVE to see a pic of your framed free drawings, HAH! Look him up......Martin Shaw.............he has done just about everything! Hi to all, KEITH

Marty with Ernie Borgnine. They mention The Stardust Ballroom a few times. Now, I think I will go back and watch Queen of the Stardust Ballroom with Jean Stapleton and Charles Durning. I love both of those movies. KEITH

ball4..gifI have started watching the WHITE FANG series. It was only one year and 25 episodes. No US stars, not an Emmy winner, don't guess.....but it has good stories......without commercials each is only about 45 minutes long. And the dog star, FANG, is excellent. Great for anyone who has kids or grandkids.........I am getting this one for a friend who just had a child a few months ago. She won't be watching it for a few years for sure....... but, at least she will have it to watch then. I am getting the animal story ones for her later years. This one happens to teach good morals also. Netflix has it now for a while if anyone wants to give it a try for the kids in their lives.............heck, at sixty three and a half........I am no longer a kid! But I love the episodes. Will let you know how it goes when I get further into it. KEITH

WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS. Great movie, (like THE YEARLING), for children and family watching. Plus, friend Jack co stars in it, LOL! Seriously, good old fashioned family movie about a young boy living in the Ozarks, who just HAS to have him a coon dog to raise. Funny, exciting, and yes, sad, also. Teaches good morals and reminds me of running the woods with my grandfather after the Beagles who were after the rabbits, LOL! You learned to tell each dog's "voice" and what it was saying...... KEITH

Forgot watched Battle of the Bulge in Blue Ray. Great. I will have to read the book. Just can't believe all of that actually happened! Also What a Wonderful Time of the Year. Andy sang the theme song which became very popular. Henry Winkler was a retired cop but was more like "Fonzie" than most any other movie I have seen him in.,.......good addition to Christmas movie menu! For those with Grandkids,.......get it........$3 at the Dollar Store, YEP. KEITH

I found Idol of the Crowds at WalMart one day for $3. Wasn't a bad movie considering it was one of Duke's early ones. Mine was Conflict...boxing, lumberjack movie with Duke and Ward. Always enjoy watching it. KEITH

No Way Out Alain Delon gangster movie

Idol of the Crowds Duke on ice

Great story Keith I find Hoffa very interesting especially given his disappearance and the polarizing opinions people have of him. In a similar vein tonight I watched The Untouchables another story which doesn't stick to the history. Costner was fine as the straight character Ness but it was Connery who really stole the show despite his terrible accent. DeNiro was an interesting choice for Capone but I think Bob Hoskins would have been the better choice, Morricone provided a great score. I don't know what it was about both Hoffa and The Untouchables but given their casts, subject matter and the people behind them they both should have been great movies but both really fell short despite being both watchable and entertaining.

You Know Irish, I believe there are some people who cannot be adequately portrayed in a movie. Hoffa was one. Haven't seen the New Untouchables yet. Good old Ward was another........absolutely impossible, LOL! Happy Thanksgiving, Kiddo! KEITH

Smart feller you are Gareth. Hoffa was a much more complicated and interesting man than that portrayed. Not saying he was an angel by any means, LOL. When he visited my guy, Gibbons, at his house in St. Louis, he used to make Gibbons have push up contests with him. Just as Jimmy was beginning to get tired, Anne, Gibbons wife, would lie down on top of her husband, and Gibbons wouldn't even slow down. Jimmy was quite adept at one hand push ups though, LOL! KP

Hoffa with Jack Nicholson and Danny De Vito interesting enough and I liked it but it really didn't have alot of depth to it considering Hoffa's rich life story. Liked the scenes with RFK best

    Well Bill,
You have kids and grandkids, so you know all these folks. I don't even know who Kevin Kline is, LOL............I pretty much got stuck in the '70s with a few exceptions. Thanks to you, I know I like Van Kilmer!
I watched Beau Geste and The Bengal Lancers with Gary Cooper. I am about to get the full uncut version of The Alamo. I know some folks say not much is cut, but others say there are some good things in it. So, I am awaiting with baited breath! I am sure you can guess from whence it is coming! Hugs to all, KEITH Oh, do you like Salsa Verde? If not, find someone in your family who does because another source is sending you some!

We went to the multiplex with another couple and saw "Last Vegas". Although it didn't receive rave reviews, we (and the packed audience) loved it. Not much of a plot, but very funny. Kevin Kline steals the whole movie.

    We deal in lead, friend.
