    Mini Biography
Son of a reporter/artist and a surgeon. Grew up in Poughkeepsie, New York. Attended Christ Church School, and Graphic Art School, studying sculpture. Roamed the South selling sketches. Made acting debut in Camille in a New Orleans theatre in 1925. Arrived in Los Angeles in 1927, worked in local theatre. Applied as scenic designer to Cecil B. DeMille, who rejected his designs but gave him voice work in several films. Debuted on film in Tol'able David (1930), billed as Peter Richmond. Protege and close friend of John Barrymore. Extremely prolific movie character actor, while simultaneously maintaining a stage career in classic leading roles such as Hamlet and Malvolio. Typed in later years as horror star. Member of the "John Ford Stock Company."

    Mini Biography-2
    from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:
This gaunt, deep-voiced Shakespearean actor would be a safe choice to win any competition for Most Movies Ever Made. A classically trained stage actor of the bravura school, he relished showy character parts, no matter how minor the footage; he can truly be said to have believed the old adage, "There are no small roles, only small actors." Carradine wasn't above chewing a little scenery here and there, and left unrestrained he frequently could be seen going over the top. But when handled by a great director-say, John Ford, for whom Carradine was extremely effective-he delivered brilliant performances. He can be glimpsed in bit roles in the early 1930s, in everything from The Sign of the Cross (1932) to such Universal horror classics as The Black Cat (1934) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935).

In the late 1930s, Carradine worked virtually nonstop in dozens of films, including such John Ford landmarks as Stagecoach, Drums Along the Mohawk (both 1939), and The Grapes of Wrath (1940), as well as Captains Courageous (1937), Jesse James, The Hound of the Baskervilles (both 1939), and Blood and Sand (1941). In the 1940s, he renewed his association with Universal horror films, playing Dracula in House of Frankenstein (1944) and House of Dracula (1945), as well as starring in Captive Wild Woman (1943), The Mummy's Ghost and The In visible Man's Revenge (both 1944); he also gave one of his best performances, oddly, in the title role of Bluebeard (1944) over at the tiny PRC studio.

After the war, Carradine found himself mostly limited to smaller roles, playing everything from a handyman in Johnny Guitar (1954) to Moses' brother in The Ten Commandments (1956), and began an association with the cheap, independent horror film that lasted until his death; among the relatively more amusing were The Incredible Petrified World (1958), Billy the Kid vs. Dracula (1966, as Dracula), Hillbillys in a Haunted House (1967), Terror in the Wax Museum (1973), Satan's Cheerleaders (1977), and The Monster Club (1980). Carradine's more distinguished later films include The Last Hurrah (1958), Cheyenne Autumn (1964), The Last Tycoon, The Shootist (both 1976), The Howling (1981), and Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), and he provided a voice for The Secret of NIMH (1982). Three of his sons-David, Keith, and Robert-have followed in his footsteps.

  • John Carradine, experienced stage actor,
member of a Hollywood acting dynasty,
made would you believe, approx 326 films.
He made 4 of these, and 1 TV special, with Duke.

The Shootist (1976) .... Hezekiah Beckum (undertaker)
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) .... Maj. Cassius Starbuckle
"Wagon Train"- The Colter Craven Story (1960) TV Episode .... Park Cleatus
Reunion in France (1942) .... Ulrich Windler, head of Gestapo in Paris
    Stagecoach (1939) .... Hatfield

During the making of Stagecoach , Duke was apparently nervous
to be working with such experienced actors, as John Carradine,
    Thomas Mitchell, and Donald Meek

  • Im ashamed to admit that I never cared much for John Carradine, until I saw him for the first time in: "The Grapes of Wrath.' Ever since seeing him in GoW, I have been a fan of his.
