    Mini Biography
Familiar and well-liked character actor of very different persona than either his father, Noah Beery, or his uncle, Wallace Beery. He attended Harvard Military Academy but managed to make a number of appearances on film and on stage with his father before adulthood. At age 19 he began playing amiable second leads and occasional leading roles, primarily in westerns, before settling into what would be the pattern for much of his career: good-natured supporting roles, usually as a pal of the hero. He kept going in such parts into his late 70s, transforming slowly into warm (or, rarely, curmudgeonly) rustic sages. In later years he achieved great renown as the father of the James Garner character on TV's "The Rockford Files" (1974). He married the daughter of cowboy star Buck Jones. Their son Bucklind Beery is an actor. They also had two daughters, Muffett and Melissa. Beery died in 1994 at the age of 81.

    Mini Biography-2
    from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:
Though a generation of baby boomers probably first encountered him as the kindly clown Joey on the popular TV series "Circus Boy," and a later generation discovered him as James Garner's dad Rocky on "The Rockford Files," this son of a great actor (and nephew of another, Wallace) had a career almost as long as Hollywood cinema itself. After appearing with his father in The Mark of Zorro (1920), followed by another role in Penrod (1922), Noah, Jr., went to military school, resuming his acting career at the end of the decade. Almost always appearing as the easygoing, good-natured sidekick, he was a dependable, even reassuring presence in zillions of pictures. A small sampling: Heroes of the West (1932, a lead of sorts in this Western serial), The Call of the Savage (1935, a Tarzan clone in this serial), Ace Drummond (1936), The Road Back (1937), Only Angels Have Wings, Of Mice and Men (both 1939), Sergeant York, Riders of Death Valley (both 1941, the latter being Universal's "Million-Dollar Serial"), Gung Ho (1943), The Daltons Ride Again (1945), The Cat Creeps (1946, top-billed, but actually the hero's sidekick once again), Red River (1948), Destination Moon (1950), The Texas Rangers (1951), The Story of Will Rogers (1952), Jubal (1956), The Spirit of St. Louis (1957), Inherit the Wind (1960, in a show-stopping bit role as Farmer Stebbins), 7 Faces of Dr. Lao (1964), Heaven With a Gun (1969), Little Fauss and Big Halsy (1970, as Michael J. Pollard's father!), Walking Tall (1973 and a 1975 sequel), and The Spikes Gang (1974).

As a fresh-faced young leading man at Universal, Beery achieved some success in several outdoor dramas costarring him with horses and dogs, including Stormy (1935), The Mighty Treve (1937), and Forbidden Valley (1938). His numerous other TV series include "Hondo," "Doc Elliott," "Riverboat," "The Yellow Rose," and "The Quest," as well as countless guest shots. He appeared once with his father, in a cameo in Show Girl in Hollywood (1930), and once with his uncle, in 20 Mule Team (1940, becoming "the only juvenile to ever get a close-up in a Wallace Beery movie").

  • Noah Lindsey Beery known professionally as Noah Beery, Jr. or just Noah Beery,
was an American actor specializing in warm, friendly character parts similar to the ones
played by his uncle, Wallace Beery, although Noah Beery, Jr., unlike his uncle,
seldom broke away from playing supporting roles.

His father, Noah Nicholas Beery (known professionally as Noah Beery or Noah Beery, Sr.),
enjoyed a similarly lengthy film career as a supporting actor.

Beery was perhaps best known as James Garner's father,
Joseph "Rocky" Rockford, in the 1970s NBC television series The Rockford Files.

Noah Beery Jr., was a fine character actor,
and is to be seen in many of the classic TV series.
He made 2 films, and one early Serial with Duke,
    which was re-released.:-

  • Hi Keith,
thank you for another piece of interesting information. I like this Trail Beyond very much but I never was aware that they was real father and son.
    Regards,
    Vera

  • I can remember the first think I saw Noah Beery Jr in and that was in a movie with Ronald Reagan and Bruce Bennett, called: "The Last Outpost" which I first watched on PBS, and on a Sunday at 6PM. Beery played the part of a Confederate Cavalry Sergeant, who wanted some Horehound Candy for his "sore throat." I always did like him in anything I saw him in.
