      Mini biography
American stuntman who also played minor roles in scores of movies. Raised on cattle ranches in Shannon, Texas and Roswell, New Mexico, he left school at 13 and became a cowhand and oilfield roughneck. He married and took his wife and daughter to California, where he joined the Culver City Police Department and guarded the gate at MGM studios. Following army service in World War II, he returned to the police force. During duty at Warner Bros. studios during a labor strike, he met stuntman Fred Kennedy, who alerted him to a stunt job at Republic Pictures. Roberson got the job, due both to his expert horsemanship and his resemblance to John Carroll, whom Roberson doubled in his first picture, Wyoming (1947). His close physical resemblance to John Wayne led to nearly 30 years as Wayne's stunt double. He often played small roles and stunted in other roles in the same film, which frequently resulted in his "shooting" himself once the picture was cut together. He graduated to larger supporting roles in westerns for Wayne and John Ford, and to a parallel career as a second-unit director. At the time of his death he was one of the most respected stuntmen in Hollywood.

    • Chuck Roberson was a regular of the
      John Ford Stock Company,
and would ultimately become a regular of the
      John Wayne Stock Company

A most memorable thing I remember about Chuck, was when,
on one of the sets, one of Chucks grand-children when up to Duke and said,
      "And what do you do?"

      Duke replied, in great style,
" Well, I guess I double up for your Grand Dad ,ON THE CLOSE-UPS!"
It was a great team, which of course, after the first outing saw Chuck double-up for Duke, for 30 years.
If you look close enough, you will see Chuck chasing, and shooting himself!!
If you see what I mean!

Another difficult one to call, is how many films with Duke,
Chuck was involved with, but he made
these 32 films with him, as a stuntman and actor,
22 of those as an actor.

      Keith,

The link you provide to previous discussion about Chuck Roberson doesn't seem to work.  I've tried it on two different occasions (thinking maybe there was a glitch the first time around), but I just get an error message.

      Hi Jim,

Unfortunately, the links back to the searches, only seem to work,
for a while, then later, show an error message!
It's a shame, because it took me a considerable amount of time, putting them in!!
I am slowly going back and either deleting them,
or posting a link, to the more important threads,

      Jim,
Here's one of yours, and that's gone as well!!!

We have enjoyed Patricia Neal both [b]In Harm's Way and Operation Pacific.

In doing a search, these results came up, where folks had comments on Patricia Neal in the past.

    • Keith,

I love the middle picture you used in the first post! It goes great with JW's response to CR's grandson!

Here is a little more information about this great stunt man -

    • Re: Pals Of The Saddle- Chuck Roberson

If there are any Duke fans here who haven't already memorized it, Roberson's autobiography - "The Fall Guy" - 1980 Hancock House Publishers - is a raucous tale from the '40s through the '70s about the stuntmen that provided the spills for generations. How they didn't break every bone, destroy every liver and invent new STDs is a miracle.
I understand that it was the inspiration for the Lee Major series - The Fall Guy, what else?
You can probably find it on Amazon. If you don't laugh out loud while reading it, please look around for another forum.

      We deal in lead, friend.
    • Re: Pals Of The Saddle- Chuck Roberson

'Good' Chuck Hayward and 'Bad' Chuck Roberson first got their nicknames off Ford
      in Rio Grande.
Good Chuck, considered Ford was good with the 'girlies',
but bad Chuck was worse, because of his way with the ladies and his night life.

During Rio Grande, with Cliff Lyon's direction
Hayward had a 'wreck' being dragged to near death by his horse,
and was in hospital for a week.
However good Chuck Hayward survived to become
one of the best stuntmen in the business.

The best way to see both Chuck's in action
      is in The Searchers
In the big Indian fight in Victory cave,
Roberson does a brilliant horse fall doubling Cheif Scar.
In another scene, Roberson and Hayward double
Duke and Jeff Hunter in fast action fight and flight
      from the Comanches.

      Harry Carey Jr. says
They Make Duke and Jeff look so good,
      it gives you goose bumps
      Best Wishes

    • Re: Pals Of The Saddle- Chuck Roberson

One of "Bad" Chuck's last roles was as a John Wayne-type western star who mysteriously dies, on an episode of "Quincy". This was aired a few months after Duke's death as I remember.

I dunno about this picture, maybe it's just me but doesn't the fellow on the far right (identified as Chuck Robertson) look an awful lot like Yak Canutt?

"I am not intoxicated - yet." McLintock!

In my opinion he looks nothing like good ol' Yak.
