    Mini Biography
As a young man, George Hayes worked in a circus and played semi-pro baseball. He appeared in vaudeville and on the legitimate stage, primarily in stock companies. Retired in his 40s, he lost much of his money in the 1929 stock market crash and was forced to return to work. He had made his film debut prior to the crash, and continued working steadily until his second retirement in his late 60s. He gained fame as Hopalong Cassidy's sidekick Windy Halliday in many films between 1936-39. Leaving the Cassidy films, he was legally precluded from using the "Windy" nickname, and so took on the sobriquet "Gabby", and was so billed from about 1940. One of the few sidekicks to land on the annual list of Top Ten Western Boxoffice Stars, he did so repeatedly. In his early films he alternated between whiskered comic relief sidekicks and clean-shaven bad guys, but by the later 1930s he worked almost exclusively as a Western sidekick to stars such as John Wayne, Roy Rogers and Randolph Scott. After his last film, in 1950, he starred as the host of a network television show devoted to stories of the old West for children, "The Gabby Hayes Show" (1950). Offstage an elegant and well-appointed connoisseur and man-about-town, Hayes devoted the final years of his life to his investments.

  • What can you say about this man, he was a great character actor,
from the toothless, Gabby Hayes, to the suave George.
In one or two of the Lone Star films, I found, that when he
wasn't playing Gabby, it was hard to believe, it was him.
    His personas, were miles apart!!
I have fond memories, from Hopalong, onwards.

    He made15 films with Duke,

Tall in the Saddle (1944) .... Dave
In Old Oklahoma (1943) .... Despirit Dean (stage driver)
Dark Command (1940) (as George Hayes) .... Andrew 'Doc' Grunch

Gabby came from the New York stage, but won everlasting fame
as a character actor in these budget westerns.
    Paul Malvern the producer said,

    Quote

I had him playing old men, heavies, fathers, gangsters, and everything else!!...He was priceless

In The Lucky Texan , it was hilarious when Gabby was dressed as a woman!!!
George had a photographic memory, and became a master at film acting.
    Finally Malvern said,

He would read that script once, and he knew, not only his part, but he knew everybody elses.

  • To help maintain continuity, and try to keep things "all under one roof" here is a a post I made, over in "What Was the Last Western You Watched."

As soon as Keith posts a Pals of the Saddle entry for Roy Rogers, we'll make sure to link there, too.

  • Hey Keith and Mrs. C,

This is really good. I didn’t know all that. I seem to learn more and more everyday.

What is really neat to me is that when that obit was written, nobody had any concept of people watching all these old movies in any way but as reruns on TV, if that. The last line in the article says, "He still received fan mail from all over the world, including many letters from Africa, where his movies are still being shown."

"We've come a long way, baby!"

He is a real favorite of mine!!

  • Hi

A pretty neat photo of Gabby. In the films he played with John Wayne he made a sinister villian in some of them, except in the one where he played Matt the Mute and wrote everything down.

My memory of him is that most of the time, he's a good guy, though definitely "an ornery old cuss". Do you remember specific titles where he plays the villain, because off the top of my head I'm not coming up with any.

    P.S. Great picture!

  • Hi Jim and Sue

In randy Rides Alone he played Matt the Mute, and I think in The Star Packer he played the Shadow.

In one of the films if I remember right the outlaws headquarters is a tree stump in the middle of town.

    As you say Arthur,
those are the only 2 Duke films that I know of.
I was unsure as to whether Jim meant
ANY film he starred in as a villian!!

  • Gabby Hayes was another of those whose names were household names in our house. I never knew what he looked like until we finally got cable TV and had seen him in: The Dark Command. The first time I saw him in anything, I became an instant fan of his. I would have loved to have seen him paired up with Al St. John - because both of them were hoots and would have easily "stole-the-show" of any movie had they both been in one together.

  • my favourite cowboy sidekick.gabby hayes had it all.great screen presents, funny dialog in the movies, like yesssireeee bob,yur durn tootin, you young whippersnapper.when he moved over to republic after doing the hopalong cassidy western with bill boyd for paramount,he could'nt used the nickname windy because the producer harry sherman refused to let him take it to another studio.harry sherman had gained legal rights to the name windy, and prevented him from futher using it in his new republic series.
He once said about john wayne, that he was the first to predict john wayne would become a big star.he my boy,he's the best,i couldn't think more of him if he was my own son.He also claimed that tall in the saddle was his second favourite western and my pal trigger was his favourite.

The Gabby Hayes Show is a general purpose western television series
in which the film star and Roy Rogers confidant, George "Gabby" Hayes ,
narrated each episode, showed clips from old westerns, or told tall tales
    for a primarily children's audience.
The first Hayes program ran on NBC at 5:15 p.m. Eastern for fifteen minutes
three times per week and preceded the puppet series, Howdy Doody.
It aired from December 11, 1950, to January 1, 1954.
The second version was a half-hour broadcast on Saturday mornings,
carried for only thirteen weeks from May 12 to July 14, 1956, on ABC

The show was sponsored by Quaker Oats' puffed cereals,
which were "shot from guns". As was common at the time,
    the host delivered the commercial.
This often included Hayes firing a small cannon loaded with the cereal at the camera,
while warning the viewers to "Watch out for your televisionary sets!"

The floor manager for the show was Fred Rogers
(of children's television show Mister Rogers' Neighborhood ) until 1953
when he left NBC to start working in public television.

I remember this show quite well from the early fifties. Gabby was exactly as he appeared in countless westerns with everyone from John Wayne to Randolph Scott and Roy Rogers. The most fun came every day at the end of the show when Gabby advertised his sponsor in a most unusual way. He faced a cannon toward the television camera and filled it with grains of "wheat." Then he warned us to "stand back away from your televisionary sets 'cause here comes Quaker Puffed Wheat....shot from guns!!!!!" The cannon went off and the contents blew towards us as the screen went black.

I still miss him and remember him with warm fondness.

    Best Wishes
