What did John Wayne say to actor Andy Prine on the set of CHISUM (1970) that caused Prine to think he was going to get fired? Was he intimidated? Sure. But Prine, who had already worked with screen icons Henry Fonda, James Stewart and Dean Martin, among others, felt like no one, not even Movie God John Wayne could tell HIM what to do! Andy went from Broadway to the Hollywood to co-star in a new TV series with Earl Holliman, the modern western WIDE COUNTRY (1962-63).

It was ROUTE 66 with rodeo cowboys! Andy went from Tux to Chaps with tips from featured actor, stuntman and rodeo consultant Slim Pickens! Go behind-the-scenes in another episode of A WORD ON WESTERNS as Andy shares stories about his days as a leading man and working actor in Hollywood. Filmed Oct 2013 at the Lone Pine Film Festival. Andy died of natural causes at the age of 86 in Paris, France, on Halloween 2022.

"I have tried to live my life so that my family would love me and my friends respect me. The others can do whatever the hell they please."

  • And it takes a certain level of humility, which he has obviously gained in his maturity, to be able to tell tales like that on yourself.

    Thanks for sharing!

  • There’s nothing new in this clip, but it’s good to see and hear Duke, relaxed and reminiscing:

“The John Wayne estate has shared rare footage of Duke being interviewed by Iain Johnstone on the 1969 set of Chisum in Durango, Mexico.

“Reflecting on his early career, the Hollywood star shared how he got his stage name and the origin of his nickname Duke …”
