    Mini Biography
Rotund comic character actor of American films. Born Andrew Vabre Devine in Flagstaff, Arizona, he was raised in nearby Kingman, Arizona, the son of Irish-American hotel operator Thomas Devine and his wife Amy. Devine was an able athlete as a student and actually played semi-pro football under a phony name (Jeremiah Schwartz, often erroneously presumed to be his real name; Devine used the false name in order to remain eligible for college football.) A successful football player at St. Mary & St. Benedict College, Arizona State Teacher's College, and Santa Clara University), Devine went to Hollywood with dreams of being actor. After a number of appearances in small roles in silent films, he was given a good part in the talkie "The Spirit of Notre Dame" in part due to his fine record as a football player. His sound-film career seemed at risk due to his severely raspy voice, the result of falling with a stick in his mouth as a child. The voice, however, soon became Devine's trademark, and he spent the next forty- five years an increasingly popular and beloved comic figure in a wide variety of films. In the 1950s, his fame grew enormously with his co-starring role as Jingles opposite Guy Madison's "Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok" (1951), on television and radio simultaneously. In 1955, before the Hickok series ended, Devine took over the hosting job on a children's show retitled "Andy's Gang" (1955), in which he gained new fans among the very young. He continued active in films until his death in 1977. He was survived by his wife and two sons.

    Mini Biography-2
    from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:
This rotund, scratchyvoiced actor broke into films in 1926 after attending several colleges and, briefly, studying to be a Catholic priest. Initially working as an extra (alongside another hopeful named Walter Brennan), he soon graduated to character parts in such films as The Spirit of Notre Dame (1931), Law and Order (1932), The President Vanishes (1934), Romeo and Juliet (1936, a unique change of pace, as Peter), A Star Is Born (1937), and In Old Chicago (1938). He usually played comic relief, although he was equally effective in occasional straight roles. Moviegoers came to recognize him by his high-pitched chuckle, curly hair, and ample girth. Following his part in Stagecoach (1939, as the stage driver), Devine won costar billing with former matinee idol Richard Arlen in a series of B melodramas produced by Universal, including Mutiny on the Blackhawk (1939) and Raiders of the Desert (1941). He also played Roy Rogers' sidekick, Cookie Bullfincher, in a handful of 1947-48 horse operas. In the 1950s, most of his work was confined to TV, both as Jingles, sidekick to Guy Madison's "Wild Bill Hickok," and as the jovial host of "Andy's Gang," a kiddie show. In a "Twilight Zone" episode called "Hocus-Pocus and Frisby," Devine was well cast as talespinning Mr. Frisby, who to his surprise is visited by real-life aliens. He served for many years as honorary mayor of Van Nuys, California, and was a favorite son of Kingman, Arizona, where "Andy Devine Days" are still celebrated-and a local museum honors his life and career.

  • Big hearted, tubby Andy Devine, seems to be everyone's favourite from
    childhood onwards

    64e02dfb92dfa963caa257f6f9898f95.jpg

He made 4 films with Duke,

How the West Was Won (1962) .... Cpl. Peterson (but not in the same scene)
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance(1962) .... Marshal Link Appleyard
Island in the Sky (1953) .... Willie Moon, pilot
    Stagecoach (1939) .... Buck

In Stagecoach , Andy made a little piece of history,
as he was one of the first 2 people Duke, ever spoke to on screen
    in an 'A' film

    Quote

Hi Ya Curly,... Hi Ya Buck....

During the filming, location moved out of MV,
to a dry lake near Victorville, California.
Winter had set in, and temperature's were plummeting.
Duke didn't like the cold, and he shared his discomfort.
    Andy remembered,

    Quote

I was so cold, that sitting on top of that stagecoach, I couldn't hold the reins,
so that I could slide them they way I should; my hand's wre so cold
that they actually locked on them.
I don't know how those poor guys just in breech clouts stood it,
because the wind was blowing up.

    Andy said of Duke,

    Quote

    Duke is a perfectionist..you wouldn't know it,
but he works very hard at his trade, and expects others to do the same.
Duke is of the old school, which insists on discipline.

    Best Wishes

  • What's interesting is that sometimes links highlight an entirely different side of someone than we already know. That seemed to be the case with Andy Devine.

Thanks, Keith, for that link - what a neat history on Andy!

  • Thanks Keith and Mrs. C for the great information on him. This is really great in knowing who they are.

  • I too have always liked Andy Devine. My parents always talked about him in somehting they saw. I did not know what he looked like until I watched Stagecoach on TV for the first time. However, I had known what he sounded like because of watching him in some Disney movie when I was much younger.

  • I still remember watching "Andy's Gang" as a kid. There were Froggy the Gremlin, a mischievous frog puppet dressed in a tuxedo, ("Plunk your magic twanger, Froggie!") and animal co-hosts Midnight the Cat and a hamster named Squeaky the Mouse. For some reason, "plunk your magic twanger, Froggie" has remained imbedded in my mind when I think of Andy Devine.

Our family purchased approximately 30 of the old Roy Rogers westerns on DVD a few years ago, and Andy is prominently displayed as a sidekick in many of them.

  • Wonderful pictures and a great article thanks!

Does anyone know of a published bio on Andy Devine

    or

of him actually saying he was one of the stunt swimmers in Noah's Ark?

I know JW said that he and Andy were stunt swimmers but it would be nice to have confirmation from Andy as well.
