    Mini Biography
Starting out as a rodeo cowboy and then becoming a stuntman in silent westerns, Yakima Canutt later doubled for such stars as Clark Gable and John Wayne, among others, in such dangerous activities as jumping off the top of a cliff on horseback, leaping from a stagecoach onto its runaway team, being "shot" off a horse at full gallop and other such potentially life-threatening activities. He became expert at staging massive events involving livestock, such as cattle stampedes and covered-wagon races, as well as Indians-vs.-cavalry battles on a grand scale. Canutt's most noteworthy achievement as a second-unit director came in his staging and direction of the chariot-race sequence in William Wyler 's Ben-Hur (1959)--which, from initial planning to final execution, took two years.

    Mini biography- 2
Hollywood's most renowned stuntman and second unit director, a pioneer the field, Yakima Canutt was born on a ranch on Penewawa Creek in the Snake River Hills, 16 miles from Colfax, Washington. Canutt grew up riding and roping. He entered his first rodeo at 16 and proved to be a natural bucking-bronc rider and bulldogger. After a brief stateside stint in the navy during the WWI, he continued a record-breaking career as a saddle-bronc rider and picked up the nickname "Yakima" (which, although a Native American name, actually refers to the town he hailed from at the time and was not, as has been erroneously stated elsewhere, because he was of Native American heritage, which he isn't. His family background is completely European). A rodeo in Los Angeles led to a meeting with Tom Mix, who got him work as a cowboy extra. Canutt's skill as a rider and stunt fighter led to a contract starring in a series of western silents. However, a case of flu had damaged his vocal cords, and when sound came into vogue, his raspy voice was unsuited to the heroics performed by cowboys in sound films. He focused on stunt work and, although he continued to play roles as heavies, quickly became known as Hollywood's premier stuntman during the 1930s. He and John Wayne created a new technique for filming screen fights more believably, and Canutt created or refined most of the stunt techniques used in westerns and action films for years to come. Canutt was severely injured performing stunts in Boom Town (1940) and again in In Old Oklahoma (1943), and after that film he retired from active stunting and concentrated on directing second units, the crews responsible for filming stunts, action sequences and other scenes not necessarily requiring the principal cast members. He created some of the most dynamic and memorable action sequences in film history, culminating in the famed chariot race in Ben-Hur (1959). He was awarded a special Oscar in 1966 for his contributions to film. Two of his children, Tap Canutt and Joe Canutt, followed him into the stunt profession. Yakima Canutt died in 1986, the most famous and respected stuntman of all time.

    Mini Biography-3
    from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:
The ne plus ultra of movie stuntmen, this former rodeo champion set the standard for achievement within that select group of thrill-makers, not only performing some of the screen's most incredible feats of daring, but actually inventing many of the safety devices still used by stunt daredevils today. At age 17 Canutt was riding in Wild West shows in the Northwest (he got his nickname as one of Washington State's "Yakima Riders"), and a few years later he was named World's Champion Rodeo Rider. In 1924 he started working in films, playing bits, stunting, and finally starring (albeit in incredibly cheap independent oaters such as 1927's The Iron Rider). Talkies weren't kind to Yak; his weak, oddly pitched voice didn't register well, so he confined himself to playing heavies, Indians, and doing stunts. He worked in dozens of Westerns and serials during the 1930s, at one time or another doubling nearly every cowboy star, and concentrating offscreen on developing mechanical devices that would take some of the risk out of stuntwork. In 1939 he astounded mainstream (read: adult) audiences with his daring feats for Stagecoach although his off-the-horses-and-under-the-coach stunt had been in his "repertoire" since 1931's The Lightning Warrior. Yak also stunted for Clark Gable in Gone With the Wind (1939), driving a carriage through the Atlanta fire, and played a bit as a Reconstruction-days renegade.

Canutt continued to do some stunts and play supporting roles in the early 1940s at his home studio, Republic, but gradually worked his way behind the camera, becoming a second-unit director (one who specializes in action or location scenes shot without the principal players) and, with 1945's Sheriff of Cimarron a fullfledged director. Canutt worked at major studios as well, doing spectacular secondunit work for Ivanhoe (1952), Knights of the Round Table (1953), Helen of Troy (1955), Zarak (1956), Spartacus (1960), El Cid (1961), How the West Was Won (1962), Cat Ballou (1965), Khartoum (1966), Rio Lobo (1970), and Breakheart Pass (1976), among others. His finest work, though, was his staging of the famous chariot race in William Wyler's 1959 remake of Ben-Hur his own son Joe doubled for Charlton Heston in the long shots. Canutt won a special Oscar in 1966 for his contribution to the art of stuntwork. His autobiography, "Stunt Man," was published in 1979.

  • Yakima Canutt was one of Duke's first personal, and screen friends.
Although, not the greatest actor, hence his failure, to make a lead man,
he was just brilliant, as a stuntman and support actor, and finally, second-unit director.

    Duke_and_Yak.jpg

He was involved with Duke in
42 Movies, 29 of which he was credited as an actor.
In some, he may have been a stunt, or double un-credited,
    or Second Unit Director
Yakima Canutt, performed most of the stunts, doubling for almost everyone.

He made more films with Duke, than any other.
During the making of The Shadow of the Eagle , Duke met Yakima Canutt,
which would lead to film, fight innovations, and a life-long friendship.
    Yak said,

    Quote

Nat Levine, would drive 30 miles out to location...to get there before sunrise,
and start shooting with the headlights of cars.

During a night on location, Duke brought out the whiskey bottle,
Yak knelt down beside him, Duke offered him the bottle.
From that moment on, they became lifelong friends, and professional colleagues.
    Yak said,

    Quote

Wayne, was a regular kind of guy.

In The Telegraph Trail , Yak appeared, in what was only his second outing with Duke, as an actor, and from this moment on, they were to try out, and perfect, their throwing of punches technique, which would be, from then on, widely used in the business!

In Randy Rides Alone , Duke really fell off the horse, looked stunned, and was looking for his hat,
    Yak said,

    Quote

"I hollered at the top of my voice, for him to get on the horse, and ride out"

The shot looked really wild, and was used in the picture
In those days, audiences thrilled to the climatic sequence.

In The Star Packer , Yak, played the most unconvincing Indian yet!!
Right at the end, Duke's new son is shown an indian dance by Yak,
who's great Indian language, consists of, what sounds like, OH THE HOKEY COKEY!!!!
Good, fun to watch, enjoyable fun!

In the film Stagecoach , his stuntwork was the best ever, with him dropping down between, the team of horses, and many other stunning, stunts.

Yak's most noteworthy achievement as a second-unit director came in his staging and direction of the chariot-race sequence in William Wyler 's Ben-Hur (1959)--which, from initial planning to final execution, took two years.

Yak died in 1986, the most famous and respected stuntman of all time.

Yakima Canutt, lifelong friend, and star man.

  • Hi

I bought it many years ago in a small bookshop in Poole I only paid £5 for it. Its 252 pages and a very good read. If you trawl the web you will probably get it cheaper.

  • Hi,

I've just done a very quick search there are some out there from Amazon and other book companies ranging from $48 up to $400 for a signed copy. A more thourough search may find one cheaper.

For the Brits $48 is only £24 and with the price of books nowadays thats not bad for an our of print book.
