    Mini Biography
    from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:
A former jazz musician (who studied at Juilliard) and actor (who made his film debut alongside John Cassavetes and Sal Mineo in 1957's Crime in the Streets Rydell won critical kudos for his first directorial effort, The Fox (1968), and has enjoyed considerable success ever since. The picaresque Faulkner story The Reivers (1969) remains one of his best films, and Cinderella Liberty (1973) told its offbeat love story with refreshing candor and credibility. The Rose (1979) was the first film to tap Bette Midler's dramatic potential, and On Golden Pond (1981) meshed the talents of its formidable cast (Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn, Jane Fonda) with great skill, creating a hit that earned Rydell an Oscar nomination. He moved in front of the camera to play vicious gangster Marty Augustine for Robert Altman in The Long Goodbye (1973), and has been persuaded to act again from time to time, as in Punchline (1988) and Havana (1990). Rydell's other films as director include The Cowboys (1972), Harry and Walter Go to New York (1976), The River (1984), For the Boys (1991), and Intersection (1994).

  • Mark Rydell only made one film with Duke,
but is worthy of a mention, as it was a good film,

    The Cowboys (1972)

New York trained, Mark was both director and producer, and if anyone
has seen the documentary, 'The Making of The Cowboys'
then you will note, that he was a very talented director.
John Williams, the composer of the music score,
    considered director Mark Rydell,
to be one of the most musically aware directors in Hollywood.

    Rydell said,of Duke

Duke claimed, that he enjoyed every minute of his association with Rydell, and said,

    Quote

He's bright and awake, although he's never made a western before....
He surrounded himself with men, who have done them,
and men who know their technical jobs

    Best Wishes

  • I remember watching him as an actor on As The World Turns. I also vividly remember an appearance he and Duke made on the Tonight show promoting The Cowboys. Totie Fields was on. It was hilarious.

  • Rydell and Steve McQueen worked on an episode of Wanted: Dead or Alive. McQueen hated him because Rydell had dated McQueen's wife. Yet McQueen's company hired Rydell to direct McQueen in "The Reivers" anyway.
Needless to say, McQueen hadn't mellowed any towards him, but he thought Rydell was a good director and wanted what was best for the film.

    We deal in lead, friend.
