  • Thanks both,
    Your wish is my command.
Good idea, I'll go back over them all, and post any quotes I pick up.
I have also posted any deleted, scenes I know about, but to be quite honest,
there are not many, if any, mentioned, in the books.

  • Hi,
The reason, I have been posting so many films, so quickly is this, and the
    answer quite is simple.
Once the films are in place, we can come back to them, one or two per week,
thus bringing them back into discussion.
This will then be the same, as we planned before.
I am getting requests, and we cannot comment, on films, if they're are not already in place.
I also notice, even whilst I was away, other threads have popped up ,about films we haven't covered, which fragments the subject.
This is the problem, we had before, and when a member, wanted to research a film, there were loads of different threads, in different forums.
By forming the new forum, we have eradicated this problem, and we have in fact moved older threads across here, so that they all fit under the correct banner.
To conclude, I don't actually find a problem with the current strategy,
and in any case, as most of the major films are now covered,
I shall continue, now at about 3 films per day, until the task
    is completed.

  • I think you've done a marvellous job ethanedwards. It's just going to take time to read through them and think about what I might have to say.Might be tomorrow might be next year that I post something...The forum has gotten better with it as now films are easier to find.IF you've got the time and energy...keep up the great work.Have one on me next time you're in your local!Cheers,Liliane

  • Hi Keith

Reading your list of Dukes minor roles I notice you include Salute among what you call walk on or minor parts. This film is of importance for two reasons the first in that I believe it was the first time that he spoke on film, and second that his role although supporting was as equally large as Ward Bonds.

It is easy to dismiss films such as Fords early Mother Machree, Annie Laurie,The Black Watch and Four Sons, also Noahs Ark and the Great K&A Train Robbery because its doubtful if you would spot John Wayne even if you knew he was in it.

I also agree with College Coach as he has a solitary walk on part lasting a second Central Airport and The Deceiver in which he played Ian Kieths corpse.

Others like the Life of Jimmy Dolan and Baby Face form another case in the case of the former John Wayne gives a very remarkable performance unlike anything I have ever seen from him as a young boxer going in to fight a far better fighter. it is certainly worth seeing and if it is worth seeing then surely it is worth reviewing. In the case of Baby face thuis film is slowly being recognised as one of the important films of the 1930s and again this might make it worth reviewing.

Many of the members of the messege board have little or no knowledge of his early films and I think you might be surprised at the number of people who are interested.

Maybe a slight review of your reviwed list might be in order.

    Regards

  • Hi Arthur,
Many thanks for your comments, and it's nice to get a second opinion.
I was in two minds about SALUTE and I shall now include it along with
    THE LIFE OF JIMMY DOLAN
However,I had not included BABY FACE in the list,
as I have already got that one in the system.
I like that film, and when you realise, for many years it was censored!!

As you concur, the others, offer no significant reason, to be reviewed,
and I shall now, fine tune the list.
    Your thoughts are always welcome,

The are now around 50 movies, still to review,
I have already compiled them, and will continue to post them
    at about 3 a day.
Each day, to vary the reviews,I have arranged to post one 'A' type movie,
and 2, 'B' types, this indeed, has taken, some time to arrange.
When they are complete, it will be good, to choose,
2 or 3 a week, for extended discussion and comments,

  • Hi Keith

No criticism meant or implied. Like everyone I think you are doing a great job and where you find the time to do it baffles me. But keep it up.

  • Hi Arthur,
    Thanks, no offence taken.
    However, working for yourself,
    does indeed, have its advantages,
and as luck as it, I take January off,
so I have already compiled all the reviews,
and all I need to do now, is post them, regularly,
    untill mission, completed.

    Thanks again, for your support,

    Hi,
Just to keep everyone in the picture!!!so to speak,
I now have only 10 films to review,
and I'd like to thank everyone for their support and comments.

In compiling these reviews and 'Pals of the Saddle',
it's not just the case of copying stuff, it's not that easy, or simple.
The articles, have to be edited, highlighted,
and placed in the forum, in an appealing, and easy-to-read format,
otherwise, it would be repetitive and un-readable!

In IMDb, Yahoo, and the New York Times, the sub-sections have to be
opened, so that the extra information can be extracted,
otherwise, Full cast, stunts, Trivia, etc, would be overlooked!
Sometimes IMDb, doesn't have a Biog, particularly for the older movie stars,
and therefore this information, has to sourced elsewhere.
I use up to 12 books, and quotes, that are included, are cross referenced,
    across them all.

Mr and Mr. Chester mentioned, about the earlier movies.
In most cases, I have a copy, but if I don't,
I ask if anyone has got or seen the film.

No single one of us is a complete knowledge of Duke,
and all our information, has to be sourced.
Mistakes can be made, and it's easy to make them,
but then that's what this forum is for, to discuss and comment.

Hopefully, we can strive, and trust that the information, is correct.
However, instead of just looking for the mistakes,
and nit-picking at the information, which is easy to do!!
Let us all, look at the total picture, and think,
we wouldn't be able to comment at all,
if this information wasn't posted, and made available!!

    Thanks for your support,

    Best Wishes

  • Bravo, Keith! I can see from the overwhelming amount of information you have posted that there has been a lot of time and effort on your part devoted to compiling and correlating all of this. I, for one, have found a number of trivia items about Duke and related subjects that I was unaware of, so keep up the terrific work. Thank you.

  • Update

Well, I have finally completed the Movie Reviews,
having posted the very last one today.

The reviews total, 116 Movies, and 3 TV specials.
    27 were exlcuded.as Duke's Minor Roles.
It has taken many hours of work, to compile them,
from the sources that are available.

Photographs, have to be sourced, and linked.

Many thanks to Kevin, for setting up the Forum,
and to Chester, Hondo and Arthur,
for all their support in this project.

    Thanks to all our members,
who have taken the time, to add their comments,
    and enter, into further discussion,
and I hope that this continues.

In effort to maintain interest in Duke's many films,
every weekend, I intend to select a couple of films
for us to discuss, throughout the week.
    However, trying to avoid ones,
which have been over discussed, over and over, in the past.
The reviews are there in the forum,
so anyone, at any time, can post on them.

For further interest, I have also where available,
added a photograph link on the Reviews.
    Just like this one,

or subject to availability, something like this,

Many thanks, and I hope you enjoy the reviews

    Now here's a little poser!!!
Apart from the movies listed, under the Minor Roles thread,
can anyone, find a film, I may have missed?????

It's worth a pint in Torquay for any friend, that finds one!!
