    ...the realistic actors of today.

    Like who???

You can roll a turd in powdered sugar but that doesn’t make it a doughnut.

  • Like Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson, George Clooney, Sean Penn, Brad Pitt, Russell Crowe, Dustin Hoffman, Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon etc. OK, some of those guys are pretty old but you get the point.

    Figures. :glare:

About the only capable actors picked are Depp, Crowe and Nicholson.

Al Pacino is way overrated. De Niro aint far behind. The Looney twins (aka) cLOONEY and Penn-head, are way too big for their britches and paid way too much for their dribble. Penn CAN act and was a favorite of Charles Bronson, however, he's still a loser in his movies. I can't stand cLOONEY's mumbling that passes for acting. Hoffmann simply needs to retire to Pitcairn Island. Di Caprio aint that good either. Titanic will be his all-time ""Big"" picture. As for Matt Damon, he reminds me of a boy's head on a man's body. I don't dislike him and liked him in The Bourne Identity but, I think he needs to take it a bit slower-so he can become a better person in movies and be able to retaina "'fan-ship"" of somekind.

  • I can see we are going to disagree on this... I cannot see

Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, George Clooney, and Matt Damon being included in the same class as Pacino, De Niro, and Nicholson. Let alone saying they are better than or equal to actors like Fonda, Grant, Stewart, Wayne, Gable, etc...

Fonda I will agree on. Grant, Stewart, Wayne and especially Gable just played the same part in everything. As Brando correctly said, the only old actor who is still worth watching was Spencer Tracy. You can still admire Tracy's modern acting compared to the dated acting to those around him.

The only sense in which Pacino is overrated is his more flamboyant performance of the last decade. Just watch "The Godfather Part II" and "Dog Day Afternoon" and you will witness some of the greatest acting ever. De Niro has only disappointed me with some of the mediocre films he's appeared in since 1995.

Clooney thoroughly deserved his Oscar for taht great movie "Syriana", having seen that at the cinema there is no doubt he can actually act. His friend Brad Pitt is also underrated.

DiCaprio is arguably the best young actor in Hollywood today, and his performance in Scorsese's masterpiece "The Departed" is more memorable than Jack's. "Titanic" was probably his least interesting film, and caused many people to wrongly dismiss him as just a sex symbol.

As for Matt, I don't really understand what you mean by him needing to play better people. Surely it is an actor's job to play all kind of parts?

  • I remember Pacino in Godfather 2, but hated the film (as I did the first one-and never watched the 3rd so I can't say yea or nay on that one) I don't remember if i've ever seen Dog Day Afternoon, or not? I have never seen a movie he has done, that I liked even a little bit. I've seen him in Serpico (one that comes to mind) and thought he did OK in it-but was not great.

We'll never agree about cLOONEY and Pitt. I have sen 2-3 of cLOONEY's films and about the same with Pitt. All were boring and I quickly lost interest. Both of these actors are way over-rated.

Di Caprio as a sex symbol? THAT is a head-scratching one there. And then there is scorcese-I absolutely will not watch anything of his after I saw that B.S. movie of his called: the gangs of new york. I hate people who falsly portray American history-such as that jerk did.

I didn't say that Matt needed to play better people. What I said was: "I think he needs to take it a bit slower so he can become a better person in his movies and be able to retain a "fan-ship" of somekind. In other words, what I said means: that he needs to not be in such a hurry to try to be a BMOC, in his movies - too eary on in his career, or else he risks becoming too-big-for-his-britches, and he will lose his fan-base.

  • While some of these actors show promise others like Nicholson and De Niro are hyped beyond belief. As for Pacino once he looked to talk his lines as opposed to mumbling them he improved as a actor.

The true guide of whether any of these actors are great will be will anyone remember them 30 years after they are dead.

Of all the Scorsese film you quote apart from Goodfellas they all LOST bucket loads of money because nobody went to see them. Hardly a successful partnership!!!

To be honest Scorsese only got his act together from late 1980s before that he was a complete coke head to the point were he was admitted to hospital and it reflects in his work,

I quote from biography on Robert De Niro not a mystery source.

  • Marty's drug and alcohol problems spiraled out of control from New York New York at lasted until late 1980's when he received treatment. It is also believed that De Niro actually directed and controlled a large portion of the filming of Raging Bull as Scorsese was incapacitated because of his drug use. After, King of Comedy he refused to work with him again until he cleaned up his act He helped relaunch his career with Goodfellas, Cape Fear and Casino. It is obvious to any fool that his work from 1990 onwards is the work of a sane man whereas his earlier work is like something from hell.

While I appreciate Scorese work as a film buff and he has made a couple of great movies
he is not in the same league or ball park as Ford or Spielberg as directors or as box office success makers. He would openly admit that those facts.

It is also widely rumoured that his Oscar for The Departed was given to him because there were major concerns over his health with recurring asthma, heart trouble plus the damage he did to himself with drugs alcohol abuse and treatment for depression.

His box office record is attached for your information. Please note that films are expected
to gross one and a half to twice their budget to be regarded as money makers.

His biggest commerical hit to date was The Color of Money which is more likely due to early Tom Cruise not getting such a heavy paycheck.

His last four movies have made serious losses and if the advertising and marketing costs
were added in they would be more. Budget is the first figure Gross is the second were there is another figure in brackets Foreign Box Office is added. Those highlighted in red lost money.

  • As far as I'm concerned, John Wayne, James Stewart, Clarke Gable, Audie Murphie, Donna Reed, Edward G. Robinson, Bogart, etc... are still alive and kicking. They are still the best actors today. I see them all every night on TCM and AMC.

  • May, thanks for mentioning Liam Neesen. I think he is a fantastic actor. I just watched him last night ina movie called: Next of Kin. He starred with Patrick Swayze, Bill Paxton, Adam Baldwin, Michael J. Pollard and Andreas Katsuelas (SP?)

A most excellent film BTW. And I love the ending them song: "Brother-to-Brother" I have to watch this one on occasion (about every 3-4 months is normal)

  • I waited 10 years fo Liam Neeson to become a big star. He finally made Schindlers List and nothing. I don't understand why he's not a major movie star. He's terrific in every part he plays no matter how bad the film. He always gets good to great reviews. He should have gotten an AA nom for Kinsey. Now I'm waitng for Spielberg to start making Lincoln. You can't get a better part than that.

I didn't know that there was a new movie that was going to be made about Abe Lincoln? I can easily "see" Liam Neesen as Ol' Honest Abe. In fact, even if this movie is not yet being made, I can easily see Neesen in this role and, he might even rival Gregory Peck's and Raymond Massey's portrayals of him.

  • Spielberg bought the Doris Kearns Goodwin bio before it was published. Liam has been connected to the film for over two years. He's wandered all over Illinois researching it. Supposedly it stalled because of script troubles that have been fixed and they're almost ready to go. A few weeks back it was said Sally Field had signed to play Mary. There had been talk of Holly Hunter, who I can't stand, in the role.

  • Im not a Holly Hunter fan either. I think Sally Field could be great in that role.

I was always a fan of Sally Field's but after seeing her rip Bush and the war the way she did during her acceptance speech at the Emmy's I believe, I lost some faith in her.

  • Hi Todd, I was not aware that she did that to Bush? Thanks for letting me know. Now I will think twice, before buying any of the Smokey and the Bandit movies as well as giving her a chance in any new project she is associated with.

  • It isn't so much what she said, because eveyone has a right to what they believe but when you get a award for your acting, just go up, get your award, thank some people and move on. Don't stand there and make a political statement, you just look stupid, petty and cheap.
