Yeah 50 of the 76 got shot. A few got away, and some were returned to the camp. It is said to be based on a true story, but I have read so many books from 'Albeit Macht Frei' camp survivors that the treatment in that movie doesn't line up.
Albeit Macht Frei is Work will make you free which was on the gates of work camps located inside of Germany. Dachau for an example.

Yes, it is based on a true story and like in the movie, 50 of the 76 were executed, 23 were returned to the camp and three made their escape.
If you get a chance, see the sequel that was made for tv. In it, some of the survivors of the camp, a few years after the war, go after the SS officers in charge of the executions and track them down to bring them to justice. I believe Christopher Reeve was in it. I don't remember if the title was The Great Escape II or if there was a different title but, it was kind of good.

Edit: It was called The Great Escape II: The Untold Story and starred Chris Reeve, Judd Hirsch, Anthony Denison and, Charles Haid.

EE, thanks for posting the music score to the movie. One of the things I like about Bernstein is his music was written for the place and time, not to prove or say anything but just to add to the quality of the movie itself.

Hi Keith, sane here-thanks for posting the beginning scenes with the theme music. This is one I would like to have as a ring tone on my cell phone.

      Hi all,
I have this signature tune on my mobile phone and my friends at V.S.A.S.A. all comment on this. Last week I left my phone on my desk and my mates called out "Phone Bill" although no one was in my office. Still a great movie and I don't think anyone couls have played "X" better that Richard Attenborough. All round worth watching again.

I agree about Attenborough, although he did take a couple hits for playing a "pudgy" POW. He was magnificent and I can't picture Richard Harris (who accepted the role and backed out at the last minute) contributing much to Bartlett.

While the end of the movie - most of the characters were murdered - is considered a down beat ending, the rousing, inspiring music combined with Hilt's never-surrender baseball bouncing, just lifts you cheering right out of the movie seat.

Hi gents, I've probably seen this movie at least 100 times over the years. I love every minute of the movie itself-with the exception of the murder scenes. The theme music is one fo the best War Movies themse out there. Some it can be compared with are the themes to Das Boot, Where Eagles Dare, Kellys Heroes, The Battle of Britain, Patton, The Bridge Over the River Kwai, Zulu, "Dog Faced Soldier" from: To Hell and Back; and so many others.

Saw a movie today at a Cinemark theater and was floored to see previews for "The Great Escape". It has been digitally restored and will be shown twice at Cinemark theaters on Wednesday, November 7.
There were no Duke titles scheduled, but since a lot of contributors enjoy this film I thought I'd let you know.
