    • Duke's Paternal Grandparents- Marion & Weltha Morrison

      MARION MITCHELL
      & WELTHA CHASE MORRISON

Marion Mitchell Morrison, born on January 20, 1845,
was Duke's grandfather, and father of Duke's Father Clyde Morrison

His Scotch ancestors had moved from Ohio to Illinois, were they were farmers
and staunch members of the Presbyterian Church

For Continuity reasons , I have now copied Mike's
original question and posted it here.

I have read that Marion Mitchell Morrison who was Duke's paternal grandfather fought in the American Civil War.
I presume because the Morrison's came from Illinois that he fought on the Union side of the conflict.
Do we have any background knowledge of what he did while serving during the war in terms of campaigns, rank and actions.

      Mike
Marion Mitchell Morrison, was 16 years old,
      when the family reached Monmouth..
He fought in the Union Army, during the Civil War.
He was enlisted in Company B of the 83rd. Illinois Infantry,
later transferring to Company E of the 61st.

At the Battle of Pine Bluff, Tennessee,
he found himself in hand to hand combat with Confererate troops,.
He took saber wounds to his chest and neck
and was hit by bullets in his nose and head.
He played dead for many hours, was unconscious for two days,
before crawling down to the Tennessee River,
where he was picked up by a Union gunboat.
He carried the bullet in his head, and suffered from
headaches for the rest of his life.

After being mustered out in 1865,
Duke's grandfather returned to his farm in Monmouth,
where he married Weltha Chase Parsons in 1869.
They had four children, George, Guy, Clyde and Pearl.
Clyde was born on August 20,1884.

A few years later the family moved to Iowa,
where Marion became an estate agent.
In 1899, he was elected treasurer of Warren County.

By the end of 1915, Duke's grandfather was becoming senile,
suffering from turberculosis, and became so bad,
that his then wife Emma, could no longer take care of him.
Eventually he was tansferred to a sanatorium,
where Duke and his parents often visited him

      Marion Mitchell Morrison,
      passed away on December 5,1915

The history of Duke's Family continues here:-Part Three

      Hi Robbie

I had never heard that one before.

I know he was originally Marion Robert Morrison then when his younger brother was born his name was unofficially changed to Marion Michael Morrison. The Glendale High
School Year book of 1925 incorrectly gives his name as Marion Mitchell Morrison but there is no evidence that he was called that anywhere else.

Duke named his first born as Michael saying "Well I sure as hell wasnt going to name him Marion"

I think apart from his school days he was known by the name the firemen of Glendale gave him as "Duke."

OK, to continue about Marion Mitchell Morrison.

He carried the bullet in his head, and suffered from
headaches for the rest of his life.
There is nothing, I've seen in writing,
that suggests anything more than this!

Duke was named Marion Robert Morrison,
      originally after his two grandfathers.
This is the name on his birth certificate.
Duke was confused when four years later,Robert was born,
and his Mother Molly told him, that his newly born brother
was to be called Robert, and that Duke would now be known
      as Marion Mitchell Morrison.
The entry in Glendale High School, Year Book
      was therefore, most likely correct.
Somewhere along the line, it was changed to Michael.
I have found nothing in my research to suggest
that the name was changed for any particular reason.

It's also worth noting before Duke was known as Duke,
he was for a short time called 'Skinny' after the
skeletal like mare, he rode to school

No harm to the Marions' of this world but I reckon Duke would have taken any name other than that one.

Believe it or not, my father's name is Marion. Everyone calls him by his middle name, George. He was always a big man, so not many teased him about it. But, thank goodness I wasn't a Jr. lol

      Hi Mark

Was the name passed on or has it finished with him. Being big would be a mighty beneficial it you were called Marion

No Mike, the name Marion stopped with him. I remember that when my first son was born, I teased my wife about naming him after my father (and Duke, of course) but she was having none of that.

But I did sneak in a Duke related name on my second son. His name is Jon Bernard, just like Duke's last role in The Shootist, John Bernard Books. Bernard was her Grandfather's name, so she excepted it. (though she wanted the spelling to be Jon, not John.) Close enough for me. lol
