Kirk Douglas, During the making of In Harm's Way
He was a strange fellow..We would usually have dinner together,*
only once or twice during the entire shooting of the movie...
We were, two completely different kind of people,
      but there was mutual repect.
Wayne liked to hunker down with the crew..
the stuntmen and special effect guys.
I was much more a loner.

      Claire Trevor
He was a man of deep feelings,..
deeper than anyone would expect of John Wayne

      Richard Widmark on The Alamo
Tell you publicity man, or whoever wrote that ad,
that the name is Richard, not Dick!

Don't talk to me about that Alamo thing.

      Gail Russell
You know the one word that defines Duke, is 'honest'...
      He's an honest man.He can't be otherwise.

Howard Hawks to Lee Marvin, about Rio Lobo
You're about quarter as good as John Wayne,
and I don't think you could do a John Wayne western.

      Andy Devine
      Duke is a perfectionist..you wouldn't know it,
but he works very hard at his trade,
and expects others to do the same.
Duke is of the old school,
      which insists on discipline.

      Katherine Hepburn
      He's Quick, he's sensitive,
      he knows all the techniques
I think he's an awfully good actor
      and a terribly funny man..

      John Agar
There wasn't any subterfuge with him...
.he was right out there in front...

      Ken Curtis
      Duke was great at action..
But directing actors, I was not that pleased with him,
so all he told you to do, was his mannerisms.

John Wayne was a star because he always played John Wayne.
Frankly, he wasn't an excellent actor,
but good heavens, what a star!
      It wasn't John Wayne who served the roles;
      the roles served John Wayne.

      Katherine Hepburn
      He has an extraordinary gift....
a very subtle capacity to think and express and caress
      the camera...with no apparent effort.

      Robert Mitchum
John Wayne had four-inch lifts in his shoes.
He had the overheads on his boat accommodated to fit him.
He had a special roof put in his station wagon.
The son of a bitch, they probably buried him in his goddamn lifts.

      James Stewart
I can't imagine there's anyone in the country
who doesn't know who he is.
Kids will be talking about him long after the rest of us are gone.
John will make the history books, as Will Rogers did,
because he as lived his life to reflect the ideals of his country.

      Katherine Hepburn, when Duke over-acted
You're tippin' your mit, old boy.

John Agar In the making of Sands of Iwo Jima
Sergeant Stryker, was right down Duke's alley....
it showed the tough part about him,

I did four movies with John Wayne.
      We were a strange combination.
He was a Republican and I was a Democrat.
      We argued all the time.

      joanne Dru
I really didn't like Duke very much, and I was terrified of horses.

Mark Rydell director of The Cowboys
I hired only Actors Studio people...that was necessary....
because I din't want him to be comfortable,
doing his old kind of John Wayne thing
He knew, that he was in alien territory...
      he watched everybody work..
He insisted that he and Gary Cooper
had been doing Actors Studio stuff
      all their lives, and nobody
had to teach them how to do it...,
      and it's true.

Adele Mara During the making of Wake of the Red Witch
He never drank at the studio....ever."
But after work, he and his pals spent most evening
in the haunts around the REPUBLIC lot,.....
You just waited to see him coming back......
first of all, he had that wonderful walk,
and when he was a little tipsy, it became exaggerated
.It really was fun to watch.
I don't think anybody saw him socially,
except for the men he drank with..
He kept very much to himself.
He was one of those people,
who liked to drink with the boys; it was a macho thing for him.
At the studio, he was strictly business..very nice and easy going,
but I never saw him hit anyone on the back, or tell a joke.
Nor did I ever hear him yell or scream at anyone.
Nobody ever said mean things about John Wayne.
Actually people didn't speak too much about him at REPUBLIC

Adele Mara In the making of The Fighting Seabees,
      had originally been a dancer
I wasn't in awe of John Wayne... because I didn't know too much about him,
I didn't even know, he was doing the lead.
All I knew, was that he was supposed to do some kind of dance with me.....
All you have to do is just hold me, and I'll do the dancing.....
I think he had fun doing it...and I enjoyed myself..
In those days, I had fun doing anything.

      Patricia Neal during Operation Pacific
John Wayne, had enormous appeal for the public,
but I did not find him appealing, in the least.
I think my charms were lost on him too.
He was going through marital problems,
which kept him in a bad humor all the time.
Duke was at odds with the director and could be a bully,
particularly with a gay publicity man,
who seemed to draw is wrath at every turn.

Later Patrica Neal, during In Harms Way said this of Duke
We had both been though a lot since then...
He was certainly a better man for it....
This time we got along splendidly.

      Aissa Wayne wrote.
Like so many men of his generation,
my father believed if a man was to call himself as a man,
he must wear a kind of armour, male and destructible,
that concealed his fears and deepest feelings from his family.

      James Stewart
John Wayne was probably the biggest star in the world,
yet he retained the qualities of a small boy.
He had the enthusiasm for life that would make
a high school football star envious.
And through it all, Duke never changed.
As a man he was exactly the boy he started out.
And as a friend ... well, you just wouldn't want a better one.
In his lifetime, Duke stamped AMERICA across the face
      of the motion picture industry.
Few other men, living or dead, have ever portrayed the
fine, decent, and generous American qualities as Duke did.
He portrayed on screen the values he lived off screen.
Gentle - so much so, it would have surprised his critics.
Loyal - once your friend, always your friend.
Courageous - if you doubt it, remember his fight against cancer,
or the way he faced heart surgery.
And decent. Above all, Duke was a decent man.
He was also far from perfect.
He made his mistakes as I have made mine and you have made yours.
All in all, I would say they were unintentional.
Mistakes of the heart, I would say.
Let me say this about the John Wayne I knew.
He was an original. He was the statue of his times.
All in all, I think it was the man's integrity
      that speaks most of him.
      His principles never varied.
      Nor did his ideals.
Nor did his faith in mankind.
