  • DUB TAYLOR

    Information From IMDb

    Date of Birth
26 February 1907, Richmond, Virginia, USA

    Date of Death
3 October 1994, Los Angeles, California, USA (congestive heart failure)

    Birth Name
    Walter Clarence Taylor II

    Trade Mark
Often played supporting roles in Westerns. His characters often wore the top half of faded long johns as a shirt.

    Also often wore bowler hat.

    Trivia
Father of actor Buck Taylor, with whom he appeared in Conagher (1991) (TV).

Grandfather of Adam C. Taylor, Matthew Taylor, and Cooper Taylor.

    Grandfather-in-law of actress/producer Anne Lockhart.

Once explained that, as a boy, he had been called "W" as a nickname for his first name Walter. That was later shortened to just "Dub."

His family moved to Augusta, Georgia when he was five.

His life was chronicled in 2007 in a feature length documentary, "That Guy: The Legacy of Dub Taylor," directed by Mark Ezra Stokes and produced by James Kicklighter.

Older generations will remember Dub as Ivan Moss in "Bonnie And Clyde" (1967).

He was a sidekick to Western Movie heroes: Charles Starrtet (The Durango Kid), Russell Hayden (Lucky), Don "Red" Barry (Red Ryder)," Wild Bill" Elliott and Jimmy Wakely.

Dub was on Johnny Carson one night. He played the Xylophone using 3 mallets in each hand. It was a phenomenal performance.

    Personal Quotes
I don't care about winning an Oscar. I'm just an actor who can play parts and make people believe them.

    Mini Biography
Actor Dub Taylor, the personification of grizzled old western characters, has been entertaining viewers for over 60 years. Prior to becoming a movie actor, Taylor played the harmonica and xylophone in vaudeville. He used his ability to make his film debut as the zany Ed Carmichael in Capra's You Can't Take it With You (1938). He next appeared in a small role in the musical Carefree(1938) and then began a long stint as a comical B-western sidekick for some of Hollywood's most enduring cowboy heroes. During the '50s he became a part of The Roy Rogers Show on television. About that time, he also began to branch out and appear in different film genres ranging from comedies, No time for Sergeants (1958) to crime dramas, Crime Wave (1954). He has also played on other TV series such as The Andy Griffith Show and Please Don't Eat the Daisies. One of his most memorable feature film roles was as the man who brought down the outlaws in Bonnie and Clyde. From the late sixties through the nineties Taylor returned to westerns. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

  • Dub Taylor was the loveable rogue in his only film with Duke,

    The Undefeated (1969) .... McCartney

However minor he may have been in Duke's film.
he was to appear in over 200 movies and many
of the most popular TV series ever made.
    From Cannonball and on,
one of the finest character actors

If I missed a thread about Dub I apologize. He was always one of my favorites. I read that Buck Taylor (Newly on Gunsmoke) is his son. I thought that Dub always played such great supporting roles no matter the size of the part.

Yes he was great in Bonnie & Clyde, The Getaway and Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid. A fine character actor.

He was also great in those late 1940 or early 1950s Westerns as a sidekick called: Cannonball.
Also thought he was great as the Belly Cheater in: Undefeated.

Ringo I didn't know about Cannonball. Thanks for the info. I do agree he was great in Undefeated.

Dub always contributed to every film he was in. In some, like Major Dundee, he even played with his teeth missing just to supply greater realism. A true professional the likes of whom won't be seen again.

There is currently no other thread devoted to Dub Taylor, but I moved your thread to the "Pals of the Saddle - Cowboys" sub-forum so others can find it in the future, and comment as desired.

Keith (who has posted ALL the Pals threads - MANY, MANY thanks, Keith!!) may bring this up to speed, or may have had a reason for not including Dub Taylor the first time around, but I'm sure he'll let us know.

As there is some interest in the likeable rogue,
I think we can afford him a 'Pals'

  • As a real coincidence, tonight we happened to see Dub Taylor in an early episode of The Andy Griffith Show. It seems this show is now available on DVD, WITH the original music (we own some episodes . . . on VHS, I think . . . with some rinky-dink music that is not the original, neat whistling that we all know and love).

Anyway, he played the postmaster of Mayberry, and we took one look at him and said, "He looks familiar!" and when the credits rolled, there he was!

Then the Mrs. said, "'We've been talking about him on the message board, just this week." So here we are!
