    In the US as a young teen, he fought in the Spanish-American War at age 18 and contracted yellow fever. This is how he lost his hair so young and decided character work would be his calling in Hollywood.

    On British and Australian stage before coming to the USA in 1912, he played more than 800 roles, starting with Sir Henry Irving at age 8. He first appeared in the US at Castle Square Theatre, Boston, in 1912, and made his New York debut in 1917 in "Going Up".

    Donald Meek was an American character actor. He first worked as a stage actor and later became a film actor,
    starring in several movies including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Little Miss Broadway, and State Fair.
    Before becoming an actor, he fought in the Spanish–American War and contracted yellow fever which caused him to lose his hair.
    He was cast as timid, worrisome characters in many of his films, and is perhaps best known for his roles as
    Mr. Poppins in Frank Capra's You Can't Take It With You and as Samuel Peacock in John Ford's Stagecoach.


    From 1931 through 1932 Meek was featured as criminologist Dr. Crabtree,
    in a series of twelve Warner Brothers two-reel short subjects written by S. S. Van Dine.

  • Always thought it was funny that Donald Meek looked like his name. A small, meek, quiet man. Still, I thought the best role he ever plaed was the railroad magnate who spared nothing in catching Tyrone Power as Jesse James in the movie of the same name. He certainly wasn't meek in that one.
