  • The Red Pony is an episodic novella written by
American writer John Steinbeck in 1933.
The first three chapters were published in magazines from 1933–1936
and the full book was published in 1937 by Covici Friede.
The stories in the book are tales of a boy named Jody Tiflin.
The book has four different stories about Jody and his life
    on his father's California ranch.
    Other main characters include Carl Tiflin - Jody's father;
    Billy Buck - an expert in horses and a working hand on the ranch;
    Mrs. Tiflin - Jody's mother; and Jody's grandfather - Mrs. Tiflin's father,
who has a history of crossing the Oregon Trail,
and enjoys telling stories about his
experiences; Gitano - an old man who comes to die at the Tiflin ranch.
Along with these stories, there is a short story
(taken from one of Steinbeck's earlier works, The Pastures of Heaven)
at the end of the book titled "Junius Maltby."
However, this last story is omitted in the edition published by Penguin Books.

Lewis Milestone produced and directed a 1949 motion picture
of the same name for Republic Pictures in Technicolor,
starring Myrna Loy, Robert Mitchum, and child actor Peter Miles.
The music for the movie was composed by Aaron Copland,
who also arranged a suite for orchestra from the film score.
Copland recorded this music for Columbia Records in London in 1975.
Another film version was made for television in 1973,
starring Henry Fonda and Maureen O'Hara.

    Very rare TV show

After the death of his father, Maureen was contacted to give the reply to Henry Fonda in a TV movie "The Red Pony", whose story was written by John Steinbeck. Her husband, Charles F. Blair, encouraged him to accept the offer for find a little serenity after bereavement.

Few sequences, with Maureen, of this beautiful film made for television.
Sorry for the bad quality of picture, this is all I could find for now.

    Here

(I reduced the size of the video to improve the quality ...)

    Unconditional's Maureen O'Hara !

  • The new DVD of The Red Pony arrived today, so here are some quickie screencaps with Maureen O'Hara. To be honest, I am not impressed with the picture quality of the DVD... it looks faded and a bit brownish, like some other MOD (manufactured on demand) DVDs I have. But it's a lot better than my first Red Pony DVD that had been recorded from a TV broadcast.

Indeed, the definition and the colors are not the best, but it is still better than the copy I own!
    Thank you for these photos.

If you want to stay on the photos, I think we can improve with slightly retouching, on levels, saturation and sharpness.
    Example ...

  • *cough*

I made those screencaps and posted them. :)

Of course you did Paula, I couldn't understand
why it was posted again without the quotes!!
Anyway thanks for your post before
    that included them all.
    Indeed she retouched your photo

  • Yes, Romy did the retouching. Unfortunately I don't have time to do any editing or retouching of screencaps. What I wish would happen is that these companies would take the time to do restoration and remastering of their films before putting them onto DVDs. I've seen remastered films on other MOD DVDs and they look great but you can tell they put onto this DVD whatever old master they had of The Red Pony.

A really great looking new standard (pressed) DVD is the Andrew McLaglen western something big. It's a lousy movie IMHO but the DVD itself is very impressive.

  • Good shot of Ben Paula....into the sketch bin. I wouldn't mind helping you retouch screen caps here and there. HAGO KEITH
