In Old California is one of my favorites of Duke’s movies! I love that he did something different and did it so well! It’s so sad that the public of the time didn’t appreciate it and he always wanted to please his audience! I love seeing him doing different roles! He had so much more to offer! Loved him in The Barbarian and the Geisha and in Shepherd of the Hills as well... he was terrific in all of them!

    Hi y’all,
It’s taken me awhile to get here. I’m old and slow. Finding it a little difficult to navigate these pages. I absolutely adore John Wayne, am actually obsessed with him as a person, an actor and a wonderful man. He certainly had his faults, he was human after all, but he was at heart- a good man, loyal, loving, generous and honest. I just started reading the Roberts and Olson book: John Wayne: American. I’ve read several other books but I understand this is a well documented and highly regarded volume. I have a question about a photo I found on the internet. I don’t know where it was taken or when- it’s really cute and I’d like to know the source. Anyone know how I can find out? Thanks!!!

I watched “Idol of the Crowds” recently. JW having grown up in California didn’t know anything about ice skating but did ok- he was a great athlete! There’s not that much skating- he played to make money to operate a chicken farm!!! It’s cute and corny - he’s a kind of guardian of an orphan who gets hurt when the bad guys go after JW and get the kid by mistake. I read somewhere that after it was done filming he spent a couple of days in hospital ??? Don’t know if that’s true and can’t remember where I read it! I know his ankles probably ached!!!

I love John Wayne and will watch almost anything he is in, just because HE is worth watching! Hellfighters isn't my favorite by far but it certainly isn’t in my bottom of the barrel list either. I have never watched (and never will watch) The Conqueror. I believe it was responsible for his death (and of many others). The Duke does a fine job in this film though unlike most others I didn’t like Katherine Ross, guess I couldn’t get past her hair! Stupid woman thing! Also thought she over acted. Vera Miles was fine as the uptight, frightened ex-wife. Always enjoy Bruce Cabot and the John Wayne gang! The fires were exciting and agree more action and less side story would have helped. Still worth watching my beloved Duke!
