I had my day off today, so I took the chance to watch "Tall in the Saddle" on DVD. Everybody will agree, that this is not a great western, it is not "The Searchers" or "Red River", but it is GREAT fun to watch!
"Tall in the Saddle" was a fine western adventure, had good actors like Ward Bond, Gabby Hayes and Ella Raines and it had some good action (like the fight between Judge Garvey and the Duke) too. Compared to "Dakota", "In old California" and "War of the Wildcats" it is one of my favourite Duke´s western of the 40´s! I even like it more than "Flame of the Barbary Coast" and "Shepherd of the Hills" (that one is more what we call in German a "Heimatfilm" than a western). And in "Tall in the Saddle" the Duke got the right girl in the end! For me Arla was the right one for him from the very first moment on they met! Ella Raines and John Wayne - that worked! Audrey Long was not enough woman for a man like him...

The German title for SWAYR seems to be the "The Devil's Captain", but my high school German is pretty kaput. I'm sure Ringo Carl can provide the accurate translation.
Your high school German is not that kaputt - maybe it´s viel besser than my English...
The German title of SWAYR was "Der Teufelshauptmann"="The Devil´s Captain". But I prefer "She wore a Yellow Ribbon"!
QuoteWhen I think of John Wayne, the first word that comes to mind is not "macho" or "tough" or "big guy" or anything like that. The word I think of is "soulful" and that lovely picture of Brittles in the graveyard illustrates perfectly my feelings about John Wayne.
I have a picture hanging in my barn and on this picture there is a lovely Indian princess together with two grey wolves in a cave. The lines under the picturer say:
"Nothing is so strong as gentleness
and nothing so gentle as real strength"
and that´s exactly what I feel about the Duke, when I see him playing Capt. Nathan Brittles! -
We have lost the greatest explorer of the 20th century. - Thank You, Mr. Armstrong for what You did FOR ALL MANKIND!
I was six years old, as Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, and I never will forget the day, when he did his small step, that was a giant leap for all of us! He was one of our best men! I never knew Mr. Armstrong and I never met him in person, but the news about his death makes me very sad. -
RIP Sally Ride! You were a great explorer and scientist, who inspired many girls and young women.
-
Rest in peace, Kitty Wells. Your music will live on forever! - I love Your music!
-
Farewell, Ernest my friend! I have seen You in so many western, war and adventure movies and I NEVER will forget You playing the character of Santini in Airwolf!
-
The Sea Wolves - The last Charge of the Calcutta Light Horse. A thrilling war/spy movie for a lazy Sunday afternoon! Gregory Peck and David Niven did a great job!!!

ScaramoucheFine old movie! I always liked Stewart Granger. He is one of my favourite actors...
I watched the 4th of July episode of Magnum for the 4th of July and enjoyed it! -
Fess Parker and Buddy Ebsen in Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier. Nice old Walt Disney western telling episodes of the life of the famous frontiersman.
-
I am going to raise my glass too and like to bring out a toast to the great spirit of freedom, that formed the American nation! May freedom and peace come to all people all over the world...
To all my American friends here in the board: have a HAPPY JULY, 4th !!!
...and tomorrow like every year "Old Glory" will be waving in front of this pro-American Austrian patriot´s home in Germany, who postet these lines! -
I found another fine James Stewart Western in my collection today: Bandolero! A more tragic western movie in the end, but with funny elements too, starring James Stewart and Dean Martin riding with a gang of bank robbers.
And You should watch Two Rode Together (this one was mentioned before). James Stewart plays a US Marshal and Richard Widmark is a cavalry officer. Both are searching for children robbed by the Comanches. - it is not The Searchers, but another great John Ford movie! -
Yesterday I watched The Bridge on the River Kwai. You won´t believe that, but I have not seen this famous movie before. What a great War Movie, one of the best War Movies ever! And Alec Guiness was fascinating as the British Colonel!

I remember a funny western movie Jimmy Stewart did. I think it was called The Cheyenne Social Club.
It is the story of a cowboy who is very religios and inherits a whore house. When he is comming there, he thinks the "Social Club" is some kind of institution for old and homeless cowboys, but then he realizes, what he has got...
I have never seen this movie on DVD and TV-stations seem to air it not too often. I watched it over 30 years ago, but I remember it was funny!
Shenandoah was another great Jimmy Stewart Western: story of a father who is against war and has to search for his sons during the Civil War.
Night Passage is a good one too: Jimmy Stewart and Audie Murphy as brothers, one a railroad engineer, the other one a train-robber. Jimmy is singin´"You can´t get far without a Railroad" in that movie! -
I watched on June 12th for the Anniversary of the Duke´s death Legend of the Lost and Sands of Iwo Jima.

Here You can find great picture galleries about the last piggyback rides and the retirement of the American Space Shuttles:
http://www.collectspace.com/shuttles/
Discovery is now at the Smithsonian Museum, Enterprise has reached her new destination in the Air and Sea Museum on the old WWII aircraft carrier Intrepid, Endeavour will go to the California Science Museum this fall and Atlantis is prepared for display at KSC. - The whole Shuttle Program was breathtaking, although I grew up with the Apollo Program and the flights to the moon. If I were in the US, I would go to one of the museums, to see the Space Shuttle!
I feel, it´s a shame, that the gouvernment did not give NASA enough money to start a new great space program. For the first time in America´s spaceflight history there is no clear direction where to go... -

"Tall in the Saddle",Yes, that´s a nice little western movie! Funny!
I like The High and the Mighty and Island in the Sky. Both are wonderful movies about aviation and You never see them on TV here in Germany and Austria. I had the chance to watch these two movies for the first time as DVD-box was released at the Duke´s 100th birthday. They had both movies in the box, and Hondo and McLintock for the first time here on DVD. Four JW movies I had not seen before!
But there are some more of Duke´s movies, they don´t air on TV and You can´t buy German versions on DVD:
A Man Betrayed
Lady from Louisiana
Lady for a Night
Reunion in France
Big Jim McLain
Trouble along the Way
Without Reservations
...and still many of the Duke´s early B-Movies.
The Wings of Eagles has never been released on DVD here too, and so I bought the American DVD. - A wonderful movie about naval aviation! -

Another thoroughly enjoyable film from the Duke and Ford. You have to watch Fort Apache now, then the cavalry trilogy is complete...

Have to say I really enjoyed this after I considered She Wore a Yellow Ribbon fairly disappointing as I thought it dragged and was quite boring. She wore a Yellow Ribbon is my favourite Duke movie! A wonderful movie about getting old, and how old persons with all their expierence can be important for the human society... I did not like Rio Grande that much, as I was younger (allthough I always loved the Cavalry Trilogy and these movies inspired me to start riding horses as I was twelve years old). The older I get, the more I like Rio Grande. I have the original black and white version and a colorized version on DVD at home and from time to time I watch them again and again. It is a great story and a wonderful western movie!

Got Hawaii five-o backed up on the TiVo, haven't watched any yet!
Probably a little reluctant as I loved the original as a kid, in fact the theme tune was one of the first things I learnt to play on a trumpet as a 7 year old!I watched the original Hawaii Five-0 as a teenager in Austria on TV. The aired it once a week and always late at night... They use the same theme song for the new series!
-
"Book ´em, Danno!" - I watched (to) many episodes of the new Hawaii Five-0 series, the whole first season. Most of the remakes of old TV-shows or movies I don´t like, but this one is GREAT! I think, some of You here have seen the original show, starring Jack Lord. I can tell You the new Hawaii Five-0 guys are as great as the original ones! They have lots of humor, there is much action, fine actors and a great story-line. We meet the old bad guy Wo Fat again, and we see more about the private life of the Five-0 cops in season 1. I real enjoyed it!

I watched In old California and Neath the Arizona Skies for the Duke´s Birthday.
