:cowboy: Without even looking at the link you provided, I KNOW your talking about one of the ladies I have always loved, and she is NOT Mae West (although she was my other girlfriend when I was much younger) :D However, the one I grew to love the most was and always shall be, Olivia DeHavilland. I thought she was so beautiful and liked her the instant I first saw her in my first exposure to Errol Flynn--in The Seahawk. Since then, I loved her in They Died With Their Boots On and The Adventures Of Robin Hood. TRK.

Boy am I glad she is still around.

:cowboy: Hi Jay, welcome to this great site. Also, I live about 100 or so miles away from you going towards The Gulf of Mexico in the Sparkling City By The Sea. Best regards--TRK.

PS: Go to the Antiques Mall in San Antonio and you will find a few who sell things to do with The Duke, and for fair prices. I picked up a soda can there about 2 yrs ago, that has images of The Duke on it from the movie: "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon" and I paid only $5.00 for it.

:cowboy: Hi Jay, welcome to this great site. Also, my own Mother was at a breakfast that you had to pay a fee for to eat with John Wayne. From what I remember her telling me, she sat across the table from The Duke. My mother was also at the premier of The Alamo. I don't remember much more than this but I do recall she said that she ordered the same meal as John Wayne did at that breakfast, which was a Western Omlett.

:cowboy: Pretty soon I will be passing the 200 mark. Also, if I had a computer of my own, I would soon be at 500 posts as I have pictures i'd like to share as well as other stuff related to the subject of this site. ;)

:cowboy: Hi Stumpy, sorry about that. I was just listing who was still living as well. The last new movie I saw Richard Widmark in I think was called: "Cold Sassy Tree" or something like that. Truthfully, the only reason I watched that movie was to see Richard Widmark.

    :cowboy: Hi Stumpy:

My favorites since the Duke passed away and that are still living are: Charlton Heston, Richard Widmark, Karl Malden, Gene Hackman, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ernest Borgnine, Clint Eastwood, Kirk Douglas, Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Michael Caine, Jackie Chan, Tom Hanks, Jon Voight, Fess Parker, Harry Carey Jr. Bruce Willis, Robert Wagner and Bob Hoskins to name a few. I like alot of actresses as well but, I am not familiar with many of their names since there are so many new ones coming to notice recently.

:cowboy: Hi Stumpy, Chester & the Mrs, Mr Brooks, Robbie:

Stumpy: Many many thanks. If I can find my list of them, I will gladly post them here. I too have many Westerns that are not released on VHS and or DVD. Your amount of movies is verry impressive as well :) Im not much of a Sci Fi fan either cept for Star Wars and Star Trek and few others. Like you, I don't care for the commercials on AMC either. They did so many years very well without them.

Hi Mrs C: I love older movies too and will always take them over new ones anytime. Just a few days ago, I watched Treasure of the Sierra Madre again. I do not tire of this fine movie. I also do not blame you for dropping cable. If it were not for stations like TCM, The History Channel, Discovery Channel, TV Land and TLC, I would not be watching TV at all.

Im getting a bit disgusted with the folks at TV land because they are not sticking with older classics. Instead, they are playing Cheers, McGyver and now Hunter. The good older shows are being shoved aside. I have been calling them up for months at TV Land about playing a show that I have never seen like Twelve O'Clock High. Instead of a real answer, I get that they will get my suggestion. Has not worked yet. Also like you do, I do buy a few newer movies like We Were Soldiers, Black Hawk Down and Behind Enemy Lines, but I buy a select few.

Hi Robbie: The last new movie I went to see that I enjoyed was: "Around the World In 80 Days" w/ Jackie Chan. It was well done and was funny though it strayed a bit from the version w/ David Niven. I did see that thread about voting for The Searchers and I did vote for it. I gave it a 10.

Stumpy: of your list, I have appx 190 of those movies on either DVD and or VHS. I only have about 110 or so DVDs so far. My next purchase will be Titanic (1953) W/ Clifton Webb, Barbara Stanwyck, Richard Basehart and Robert Wagner & probably The Hunters w/ Robert Mitchum & Robert Wagner. My last two purchases were: COMBAT Season 1, Campaign 1 (Which I am VERy satisfied with ) and Judgement At Nuremberg w/ Spencer Tracy, Richard Widmark, William Shatner, Montgomery Clift, Burt Lancaster, Werner Klemperer, Howard Caine and Judy Garland.

:cowboy: Hi Stumpy, Yep, Plex had a different theme each day of the week. My favorites were Wednesdays and Thursdays. Wednesdays I was able to watch 2 hrs of COMBAT and other war movies and such. Thursdays my VCR really went to town as I kept it busy recording western after western after western. This is how I got exposure to the likes of Wild Bill Elliott, Kenneth Starette, Bob Steele (except for his days as a Three Mesquiteer) and many others.

I am hoping that someday I can afford a computer of my own so I can record all of these to DVD. This was also how I first heard and saw Buster Krabbe as a Cowboy. His sidekick was Al St. John.

I have heard of Encore and I THINK it might be avaliable in my area. The only glitch is is that its not on the cable system that is used at the apartment complex I now live at since we get free cable here.

I sure would love to have access to something like Encore.

    Take care and Best regards--TRK.

Or if it is still around, does anyone have access to it?

We had it here several years ago but for some reason it was dropped from the stations we had on our line up. If your not familiar with this channel, it had a completely different theme every day of the week. For instance:

    Monday might be for Mysteries.
Tuesday might be for Crime shows and movies.
Wednesday was for Action/War shows and movies.
Thursday was for Western shows and movies.
Fridays were for something else possibly Romance?
Saturdays and Sundays were childrens programmming etc.

Anyway, if you like collecting Westerns like I do (this is how I was able to get appx 400 Westrern movies that are in my collection) it was an excellent source for them. Because of that station, I was exposed to many many westerns for the first time including many with stars I never heard of before. I also was able to see shows I never heard of before like: Buffalo Bill Jr and Annie Oakley.

I'd like to hear from anyone who does have access to this channel, as well as from others who do not.

    Best regards--TRK.

:cowboy: Good morning everyone, thanks for the responses as you listed several I had forgotten about. I too like Ward Bond a lot but never thought of him as a sidekick. I did forget about Walter Brennen too but probably because I never thought to look at him as a sidekick. Now that I think of it, Brennan was a great sidekick. I loved him in The Westerner.

Thanks Robbie and Hi Arthur, Victor McLaglen was great and my favorite with him in it is Fort Apache and then Rio Grande. It's hard to not think of him in a John Wayne movie.Arthur, i've never heard of Rand Brooks before and I admit that I have never had the pleasure of watching a Hopalong Cassidy western before. I wonder if any of his movies are on DVD yet?

As for Leo Carrillo, I only remember seeing him in The Cisco Kid many years ago but I do remember liking him alot. I know that Cisco Kid (at least the first season) has been released on DVD and I plan to get it sometime. This sure brings me back about 25 or so years. This was back when we first had exposure to Cable TV and back when I thought every station on was absolutely fantastic. Late nights and weekend mornings/early afternoons, was when I was exposed to The Lone Ranger, The Cisco Kid, Sky King, Rin Tin Tin, F Troop and many other great shows I never had seen before.

Back when we first got cable, everyone in the family was glued to the TV sets throughout the house (4 TV's) and everyone watching something different.

    :cowboy: Great choices.

I'll say this as my own opinion. I bet Peckinpah did not use John Wayne in that movie probably because Peckinpah figured he would not be able to bully The Duke. Don't get me wrong, I love some of Peckinpahs works like: The Wild Bunch, Cross Of Iron and Major Dundee--which I wish they would release Dundee on DVD so I can see it again.

    :cowboy: Hi Stumpy et el.

I love older black & white movies. I will take them over the stuff made these days. You are correct in your assumption of my taste in movies. I simply love the older stuff and will always prefer it over the stuff made these days. There are few exceptions to movies made in the last say, 27 years. I loved the original three Star Wars movies, and a few others since then. The Big Red One, Lethal Weapon 1-3, some of the Star Trek movies, Big, Romancing The Stone, and movies like: We Were Soldiers and Around the World in 80 Days -- which just came out recently and has Jackie Chan.

Not to disagree with anyone but, I absolutely cannot stand horror movies as well as sex oriented movies. My brother who is 2 yrs older than I am, hates all older movies. If it is not in color, he will not watch it. Too bad because he has missed hundreds of great classics. If you were ever here where I live and walked into my house, you would see I prefer the older movies. I think that about 90% of my collection on both VHS and DVD are older and B&W movies.

I'm not bragging but, it took me years to collect some 500 western movies--something I am proud of having. My next favorite Genre is War Movies. I am also slowly moving to Cold War and Spy type movies. One of the few more recent movies I really enjoyed were: The Bourne Identity, Behind Enemy Lines, Around the World In 80 Days, Samurai and We Were Soldiers.

For years my favorite TV stations were: WTBS, WGN, TCM, TNT and AMC. However, AMC, has definitely taken a turn for the worse when they started playing the newer movie especially horror movies. WGN seems to no longer air classics as well as TNT.

I will take: They Died With Their Boots On w/ Errol Flynn and Olivia DeHavilland any day over something like: Friday the 13th or Nightmare On Elms Street.

BTW, anyone here enjoy movies with Richard Basehart? To me he is one of the all time underrated actors.

    Sorry I got long-winded--TRK.

:cowboy: This one might be a stumper for some but, who is your favorite non John Wayne western sidekick?

I admit for me this one was tough since I had to choose between the following.

    Al St. John.

    George "Gabby" Hayes.

    Andy Devine.

    Noah Beery Jr.

    Smiley Burnette.

Of these, I think Al St. John was the best but a VERY close 2nd was George "Gabby" Hayes.

I'm sure I missed several choices and it will be interesting to see what you all think. ;) TRK.

:cowboy: Hi Stumpy, Viper, Arthur, Jen, Mr. Brooks.

Heh heh, I knew it was a hard question to answer and I can see why. The movies listed were all excellent choices and reminded me of many others. Two others I have to add as favorites of mine are: Arrowhead w/ Charlton Heston, Brian Kieth and Walter (Jack) Palance & The Last Outpost w/ Ronald Wilson Reagan, Bruce Bennett and Hugh Beaumont (Ward Cleaver of Leave It To Beaver fame)

Heh, I just thought of another possible stumper for you all which I will do as a seperate post.

    Best regards--TRK.

:cowboy: Hello A Girl named Jen/Mr. Brooks.

I think you hit something about H.H's. I never thought to not want to watch the show because Bob Crane was into a wierd lifestyle. I remember as a kid when they announced that he had been murdered but at that time, I had not known what I do now about him. I just was saddened at his death. This happened when his show was played on Channel 10 at 4:40 PM every afternoon. I think like Mr. Brooks that my reason for watching the show was because it made me laugh and it was fun to look at. I gues I just never thought to not watch HH because of Crane's past. Not thinking of his past, you might actually enjoy watching the series. I'd give it a shot a few times and then make a judgement. The theme song I also liked. You can get it on record that also features Crane's voice as well as that of Sgt. Schultz. Hogan says something like: "Hey Schultz, i'm gonna walk right out that front gate" and Schultz does his crying whail which is funny.

BTW, John Banner-Sgt. Schultz & Werner Klemperer-Col. Klink, both left Germany befor ethe war and immigrated to the USA. You can see John banner in other older movies like: Go For Broke: w/ Van Johnson, and 36 Hours: w/ James Garner. Klemperer was also in his fair share of good movies as well. One that comes to mind that I dearly love to see is: Judgement At Nuremberg w/ Spencer Tracy, Burt Lancaster and Maximilian Schell.

M*A*S*H is OK for me when there is nothing else on since I probably have seen all or most episodes more than once. You are correct: Tour Of Duty did play Paint It Black as its theme. It really was a well done show and I wished it had lasted longer than it did.

I would bet that Mr. Brooks might have liked to watch the series: Twelve O'Clock High. I was lucky enough to have had a friend that managed to tape me several episodes before it was taken off Canadian TV. It was nicely done series as well.

Mr. Brooks, I still intend to ask you about your Korean War service and Mig Alley, as soon as things slow down for me a bit here.

    Best regards to you both--TRK.
