I lived in the Hawaiian Islands for twenty-seven years, with my home overlooking the USS Arizona Memorial. Each visit to this hallowed place is as powerful as the one before it, and no film did more for this viewer than Tora! Tora! Tora! to bring home the reality of that fateful Sunday morning so many years ago.

That would be Quantum of Solace, the latest in the James Bond anthology.

That would be Rio Bravo, which I watched last night....though I caught the last 30 minutes of Rooster Cogburn this evening on Encore.

Our part of Colorado was blessed with rain and snow, up to 6" of rain, 56" of snow from the latest storm. And today, it passed 70 degrees and one can see the fields and yards turning green. The moisture is a true blessing to the farmers and ranchers and us closer to city dwellers too.

One thing positive was witnessing a car hit a boy on a bycicle in our neighborhood this evening....that was NOT positive, but the fact that boy was not seriously hurt. Thankfully the driver had not been speeding, nor drinking, and was genuinely shaken to the core by the experience. A potential tragedy was averted, and only the bike was a wreck. The Lord continues to work miracles today.

Having a collection of 98 of his films on VHS and 108 of them on DVD, going to Blu Ray is going to wait. That was a very good and enjoyable article from the Wall Street Journal, thanks very much for the link and the read. No wonder Rio Bravo made this site's number one favorite list in this it's 50th year.

Quite a selection of theme music growing in here, so much variety, yet all bringing back good memories of good, excellent and superb films. I listen to a theme and then remember I should go watch the movie.

I'd be interested to find out the reasons behind the lack of availability of Red River Range, The Night Riders, Wyoming Outlaw and Frontier Horizon from the 1938 to 1939 time period. These are the newest group of John Wayne's films that I do not have on VHS or DVD.

I'd wish he'd never made The Oregon Trail, not because it's a bad movie, but because the movie is at present not known to exist and therefore my collection of his films will always be missing that one (and yes probably several more).

Looks like this one is no longer available on Amazon. It's the only film of the Duke's from the 1940s that I am still missing. I should have bought it back when it was last released in 1998. I have yet to see the film either.

I've never found a decent copy of this film, and ended up settling for a used VHS copy of the film. If it were not for the scenes of John Wayne, I am pretty certain I would have never looked for the film nor have it in my collection.

I have seen this film, but it has been a long time. Time to dig out the DVD and watch Wake of the Red Witch again. I do remember it being quite good and high on my list of favorites....hmmm, well if it is there, I am glad for reminders on this site of a good Duke film to sit down and watch.

Many thanks for putting these two films on the site, I was completely ignorant of John Wayne's involvement in either of them. I will be looking forward to finding copies and viewing the films. Thanks again.

Hopefully there really is a master print in their archives and that one day the print will be copied so that we can see this early film of John Wayne with Loretta Young. I do not believe they were paired in any other films, but I could be off on that assertion. Even an incomplete copy of the film would be superior to no existing copy at all.

This is a film I enjoy, the locales, the scenery, even the plot. I can not say I would have ever imagined John Wayne piloting a ferry boat were it not for this film. This is a film, however, that I have watched several times...it might be a Feng obsession, who knows.

Of all of the films of the Duke, at least from the 1940s forward, this one is is the one that most seems a prisoner of its' time, yet it does send a message through the years to our own time. The nation of that time was under the spell of McCarthy and the search for Communists in every corner. It took awhile, but people spoke up and the hysteria came to an end. One can see the situation replay itself in our own decade, and in our own time we see people speak out against accepted line. In light of the world in the post September 11 period, I found this film to be most interesting. As time moves forward, I hope it becomes less a reflection, yet remains a good object lesson. It is certainly a unique film in the John Wayne filmography, yet one that met the mood of many of that time in history.

I've always enjoyed this film which is a different vehicle for the Duke in his career. Perhaps it was the unique locations, from Australia across the Pacific to Chilie then ultimately to the North Sea, or perhaps it was the fact you might think the role he was playing was a bad guy, but clearly he played it to anything but a bad guy role. In any case, I enjoy watching these films of John Wayne that are different, varied from the roles we so often associate him with.

I have this one on VHS and have watched it twice. It's quite different than most of his films from that point in his career, but not a bad film. I would not rank it as one of his best, but seeing a different setting for John Wayne to ply his skills is something I enjoyed. Given his health problems at the time of filming, he did quite a splendid job.
