Yes this is just unbelievable.

Apparently John Wayne wanted Arness to appear in The Alamo but Arness, realizing the movie would be bad, didn't even bother to turn up, which made Wayne very angry. It would be interesting to hear an explanation from Arness but I doubt he will give more interviews now due to his age and infirmity.

Yes he was great in Bonnie & Clyde, The Getaway and Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid. A fine character actor.
-
I was sad to read that they weren't friends in real life.
-
I thought it was funny that in Rooster Cogburn Martin was playing the old man at 55, while Wayne and Hepburn were actually more than a decade older than him!
-
They will probably make Pius XII a saint soon, which is sure to set back Catholic-Jewish relations a few Millenium.
-
I was impressed Forrest Tucker did all the fighting himself, despite being older and heavier than he was in Sands of Iwo Jima. My only real regret about this fine film was that the actor playing Billy the Kid was quite weak. You couldn't ever imagine he was a ruthless killer at all.

I don't know if I said it on this siote or not? but-my last Western watched was w/ James Stewart, Arthur Kennedy and Rock Hudson in: Bend of the River.
You know Ringo, a lot of people seem to regard BOTR as just a B-western with A-list production values, but personally it has always been my favorite of the five Stewart-Mann westerns. -
I saw Midnight Express for the first time ever. Definitely a powerful film which still looks fairly modern. I think John Hurt may be the most underrated British actor of his generation.
-
I think sometimes a film may be disappointing when you've heard how great it is from many people, so when you watch it for the first time you're expecting to be really blown away by its greatness. I wasn't very impressed with Vertigo the first time I watched it, but now after several viewings I like it a lot more.

[quote='Stumpy','http://dukewayne.com/bb/index.php?thread/&postID=90166#post90166']I've managed to survive Democratic administrations of Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, and Clinton. (Not sure I'll survive Obama). But of the six I did survive, I thought Harry Truman was the only Democrat worth a damn.QUOTE]
It's interesting you should say that because John Wayne always said Truman was the only Democrat President of his lifetime that he admired. -
I agree alamo221, it was strange seeing Lee J Cobb playing "uncle" to the decade-older Cooper.
-
Yes that was a really good one, part of a western trilogy he did at that time along with Lawman and Ulzana's Raid. I didn't realize until recently that about a fifth of Burt's movies were westerns.
-
I had the feeling Duke was playing a lot younger here. A great movie though, you'd hardly guess how ill he had been.
-
I also agree Chris was not much of a actor. I think Duke put him in a couple of films as a favor to is dad Bob Mitchum. But all in all I love this film.
And I also thank God Duke had on some long johns in the shower scene. There is only so much of Duke I wanted to see.
Yes he was a little past the full frontal stage at 63! -
It was a shame that Stewart fell out with Mann for the rest of his life over a piece of crap like Night Passage. They had made five good westerns together and Stewart would probably have made Man of the West and The Tin Star with him, but for that fall out.

Hi
One thing that helped Flynn with his accent was the fact that early in his career he did rep in Northhampton for a couple of years the stage is a great teacher.
Regard
Arthur
Was he there for two years or just a few months? When he arrived in Hollywood they claimed he's performed in the West End but apparently that wasn't true. -
Seems a majority disagrees.
The Republicans will probably lose the election by running another loser candidate. It will probably be Romney next time. -
He says this about a film that won five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director (Mel Gibson).
All its Oscars should have gone to The Usual Suspects, not the talentless Gibson. -
HEY Dude!
Tone it down a notch. This a friendly site Not a place for hate and wishing people a horrible death. We get the picture you don't like Mel.
That's true Bill. All I can say is that I will celebrate Gibson's death as much as I did Arafat's and Saddam Hussein's.
