dont agree with you - Coogan's Bluff is no one of the very goods - but its still a classic and great entertainment - about Don Siegel : no film he directed is realy bad!!

Depends what we mean by "really bad" - something you would give zero or one point out of ten? (I've rarely seen anything that bad by anybody, actually). In that case I agree - all Siegel films I've seen earn a few at least. Even the most embarrasing to watch due to weak stories and incoherent direction, as Coogan's Bluff or Two Mules for Sister Sara, or just forgettable as Madigan, still have entertainment value. But they are far below the abilities of their makers.

Have to disagree with you about Every Which Way But Loose, Any Which Way You Can and Where Eagles Dare. Just what is it about these three movies that you don't like?

EWWBL & AWWYC are comedies and I thought he was great in them and being at war with the Black Widows Biker gang is a classic.

I'm not the least bit amused by the poo humour, or the ridiculously stupid gang members, or an ape just because it's an ape. I don't so much oppose Clint's part in these movies, he obviously has good chemistry with that ape ;) (Sadly, one of the ape actors died shortly after the filming). Oh, and I think Sondra Locke is a terrible actor; always dragging her along is one flaw in Clint's nearly infallible sense of what is entertaining.

And then theres Where Eagles Dare. The only thing I have wrong with that movie is the fact that Burtons men wore M-43 caps which were made way too small as you can see that the ear-flaps were way too small. Aside from that minor militaria faux-paux-the movie is thoroughly entertaining-as is the two "Apes" movies.

M-43 caps? Ehrr... What's wrong is the too unbelievable story and Burton in his role. I think it can be entertaining only if one is enthusiastic about explosions. Clint's role is too small to salvage the movie.

When I do watch a silent movie or one of the first "talkies", it's more from the historical perspective than for enjoyment, as the technical abilities back then were rather limited.

Some Buster Keaton's films are (also) technically amazing, especially Playhouse and Sherlock Jr. But of course, he was far the best of the silent movie makers. His films are also more exciting, because the stunts are real, and we see the long shot action, not the actors' faces acting excitement. Bill Hart did a lot of his own stunts too, and he had a wonderful companion in many of them, his small pinto Fritz. Yes, the stories are simple, the acting often melodramatic and the defects of movie making patched with overlong intertitles, but what they may lack technically, they compensate with authentic atmoshere that I don't think has quite been reached since.

Outside westerns, I think Clint's best work are the first two Dirty Harries (Dirty Harry and Magnum Force), The Bridges of Madison County, Million Dollar Baby, In the Line of Fire, Play Misty for Me, Absolute Power, A Perfect World (for directing, Costner takes the show in this case) and Escape from Alcatraz - and I like Francis in the Navy - but that's more for the mule than Clint.

And the worst are Any Which Way You Can, Every Which Way But Loose, The Gauntlet, Coogan's Bluff and Where Eagles Dare (Clint's fine, but the story and Burton as the hero are too unbelievable).

I've seen a few of his movies, and liked what I've seen so much that I rate him as one of the best screen cowboys. I've also read his auto-biography, and even if it's exaggerated and showing him in the best light, it's entertaining reading about a very interesting life.

I didn't find a full filmography in Russian - Senta would probably know better? - but what I found, the titles are usually very faithful to the originals. Here are a few that differ a bit

Самый меткий, The Shootist - Best on target
По методу Харма, In Harm's Way – In the way of Harm (as understood that Harm is a name)

Негодяи / The Spoilers – The Scoundrels

В седле / Tall in the Saddle – In the Saddle

Горящий полет / Flying Leathernecks – Hot flight

Popcorn is indeed one of the reasons why I so rarely go to cinemas. I can't stand any distracting noises or smells. People eat and talk through the film, mobiles ring etc. And popcorn is in top of the list of noisiest and foulest smelling foods.

And movie theatres aren't even dark anymore - some stupid safety thing I suppose - I don't want to see everyone around me, it's away from the magic. Last time I went to see a movie the damn light was above the screen. That was nearly a year ago, and the memory still keeps me away.

Depending on your definition of War Seven Samurai, The Spartans, Gunga Din, Tuskegee Airmen, Four Feathers

Yes, "war movie" can be a broad definition in several senses.

Allready mentioned, The Bridge of River Kwai and Paths of glory, definitely.

It's a long time when I've seen them, but at least back then "Johnny got his gun" and "All quiet on the western front" made a great impression.

Casablanca, African Queen and Doctor Zhivago could be counted as war movies.

Leone's Giu la testa, from Mexican civil war.

American civil war, Keaton's The General

Battleship Potemkin, 1. stage of Russian revolution

Italian sort of war movies, Rossellini's Roma citta aperta, Bertolucci's Novecento.

Tarkovski's Andrei Rublev, 15th century wars in Russia

Kurosawa's Kagemusha, 16th century wars in Japan

Another 2. world war prisoner camp movie, Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence

Godard's Les carabinieres, a war somewhere

The Unknown soldier, 2. world war from Finnish point of view, both the Laine's old version and Mollberg's new, though they are quite different

I added a few pics in my gallery, showing sunny days in an Estonian island, riding and herding horses

I had to check all three ingredients from Wikipedia in order to understand Ringo's recipe. That prompted me to think of something very simple and commonplace to me that anybody here very probably haven't eaten, and here's the answer:

    1. Go to northern conifer forest in autumn and pick rufous milkcaps (Lactarius rufus, gor'kushka in Russian), a mushroom species that in suitable places is found in abundance. In Finland it is commercially harvested; some British fungi books mark it as a poisonous species, but it is just very acrid and may irritate stomack if eaten raw (the same way lots of raw garlic does to most people)

    2. Boil the milkcaps (according to taste, the longer you boil the milder they become; I just bring the water to boil, and if I mix a minor amount of them with mild mushrooms, I don't boil them at all) and throw the water away

    3. Dry them in frying pan and then add oil (virgin rapeseed oil is the best) and fry

    4. Cut well washed potatoes into very thin sticks (almost like matches) and fry them

    5. Mix mushrooms and potatoes, add pepper and soya sauce

    6. Enjoy

Can also be made using salted milkcaps - salting is the most common way of preserving them for winter.

I was conceived in a stable room, and in a way started riding before I was born. I have only two clear memories from the time I was 3. One is my first time on horseback (a huge working animal) and the other is seeing a dead horse (and my grandmother being immensely proud because I didn't cry, but that's another story). My mother was a professional groom and was credited to have a special touch with arabs, but it was the lowest paying job possible, so she moved on.

Since then horses have been part of my life on and off, but never really a big part, I haven't lived in a farm or even owned a horse. Next week I'm going to a farm holiday to Estonia, which will include a few hours riding every day. Last time I spent a lot of time on horseback earlier this year, taking part in a riding tour in Ecuador. That was mostly slow going on steep mountain paths, with magnificent views. There are some pictures in my gallery.

I agree with kilo6 and John Ford that one of the most beautiful sights is a galloping horse.

Last year I posted my semi-objective "100 best" movies list. Now here's my entirely subjective "100 movies I like to watch" list, only what can be considered American. I omitted some good films that make me too sad, angry or disgusted, and included bad ones that make me feel very good.
