Amen to that! We dumped cable about 7 or eight years ago, and have never been sorry! You must understand that where we live, without cable, there is nothing on the screen but snow.

I occasionally miss being able to watch the news, and I really miss Jeopardy and things like The Waltons and Touched by an Angel, but generally we've been real satisfied with our decision.

As a result, our "cable dollars" have gone into a fairly extensive video (and growing DVD) collection, of largely older movies or more recent "family-friendly" ones. Our 16 year old will take Cary Grant and Humphrey Bogart any day over most current stuff, and the eight year old has a tremendous memory for players in movies - he will point out someone in one film that he remembers from another one we watched months ago, and I'm talking about lesser known actors and actresses. An example that comes to mind is Mildred Natwick - she was in a few JW films - check her out at
IMDb - Mildred Natwick -but we've seen her in several other old films, too. After watching the older films for awhile, you really do get to know a few faces.

Of the more recent fare, we enjoy things like the Back to the Future trilogy (OK, so that's not so[I] recent), the new Cheaper by the Dozen, Hidalgo, and The Count of Monte Cristo as a family. Not so much for the younger children (ages 6 and 8) are titles like Frequency and Braveheart. The teenage daughter likes Return to Me (actually fun for older folks as well because of the older supporting cast and great tunes from Sinatra and the like  ), Legally Blonde (only the first one), and other similar "romantic" stories. Her current "favorite-movie-of-all-time" is Napoleon Dynamite.

If it's laden with sex and foul language, it's not for us. There are obviously movies that just aren't appropriate for children because of the subject matter, that pass muster for the adults. Personally, I prefer a movie that I can watch without worrying if a small child walks into the room.

    We LOVE the old movies!
