It was this trait that annoyed John Ford. He knew that someone was coaching Duke and he had a pretty good idea that it was paul Fix but could never catch him at it. Ford solved the problem in Ford's own inimitable way.
In the scene in She Wore A Yellow Ribbon where the renegades a captured by the Indians Ford wanted Fix to fall out of the wagon and walked barefooted over the ground. Fix looking at the rock strewn surface refused.
Ford never used him again. Problem solved Duke's coach was removed from the set.
However Wayne continued to use him to great effect in Wake of the Red Witch Island in the Sky Hondo, and The Sons of Katie Elder being just a few.
