I think George Kennedy was an excellent actor. He could come across totally friendly and believable and at the drop of a hat turn cold and menacing.

He was VERY versatile in that way.

Totally friendly, a real hero - I think of his role as Joe Petrone in the Airport movies. You couldn't help but love him.

Cold and Menacing - his roles in The Sons of Katie Elder and Cahill: US Marshall (he was particularly menacing, in fact downright frightening, in this one).

If you want to see George Kennedy at his most villainous, see the film Lonely Are The Brave with Kirk Douglas. He's fantastic as the viscious bully cop who works Douglas over while he's in jail.

I don't think I'd want to see him in that movie - I found him pretty darned mean, vicious, and nasty in Cahill - US Marshall. His picture above looks so dignified, compared to the nasties I have seen him play! Curly in The Sons of Katie Elder - MEAN!
