Rydell and Steve McQueen worked on an episode of Wanted: Dead or Alive. McQueen hated him because Rydell had dated McQueen's wife. Yet McQueen's company hired Rydell to direct McQueen in "The Reivers" anyway.
Needless to say, McQueen hadn't mellowed any towards him, but he thought Rydell was a good director and wanted what was best for the film.
