In the beginning as a young man with Andy Devine and thousands of extras in the water making Noahs Ark. I doubt if Duke was noticed.
In the Comancheros Duke had reached superstar status and did more or less as he pleased. Especially as Curtiz was dying of cancer and had to lean heavily on Duke to get the film finished.
