FYI, I introduced your question in the Bruce Cabot thread, in hopes that someone will shed some light on what you shared here.

You would expect Wayne's best friend to be played by either Cabot or Ward Bond.
That would have been a little difficult for Ward Bond, who died in 1960.But it would be interesting to find out if anyone else knows anything else about Bruce Cabot being intended for this film.

Slim Pickens, a regular in ma-a-a-a-a-a-a-ny TV cowboy series, plus many regular movies - I still remember him in Dr. Strangelove, riding the nuclear bomb into the sunset. His portrayal of a rail boss in Blazing Saddles is a classic, keeping us all laughin' a plenty over the years!
