The truth is AMD has almost always had a better processor, when we where a second source for intel our 286,386,and 486 out performed the intel chip. AMD's where almost always a year our so behind intels and that’s why AMD was not in the forefront then. The problem AMD had with those chips where bad chipsets.

Then came the 586 or K5, that thing was a hunk of junk. The issue with that chip was that intel sued AMD over use of their microcode that AMD had bought rights for. Intel said sure AMD could use it but could not sell it. The court decided that AMD could no longer use the microcode and AMD had to design the next chip with people that had not been exposed to the intel microcode. AMD had to basicly lock the designers in a room while they came up with the new code and design and thus the K5 was born. AMD made great gains with the K6 and started to hurt intel. That’s when AMD bought alpha and the K7 was born and AMD started to take a lead in chip speed. AMD's chips beat intel's at clock for clock performance and that is why AMD's chips are the best bang for the buck.

The biggest advantage that intel has right now is that software is optimized for their microcode.

Sorry... after working at AMD for 14 years it's kind of hard not to get info out when I can.

Yeah I remember the cassette tape drives... it sucked when you got one of those mixed up with your music :stunned: ... The first system I built just for me was an 8088, with duel floppy drives and an amber monochrome monitor. I had an expansion card for RAM so I had in maxed out to 512k. I remember the first time I saw a 100 meg hard drive, that was just crazy, no one would ever need that kind of space. If I remember correctly it was almost five times the size of my 100 gig is now. Oh, and the system ran at 8Mhz, 12 Mhz with the turbo button pushed in. My CPU now runs at 3 gig Hz...

If you are going to by a Mac get one with the duel Intel core CPU. They run both OS X and Windows. This is really a slick system and if I were in the market for a new system I would probably buy one of those. Oh, and yes window is a rip off of the Mac OS. The windows operating system has drained a lot of power out of the IBM base systems. I would love to run just plain old DOS on the system that I have now, but then I wouldn't have this wonderful user interface.. blah...

I have been programming and building systems since the TSR-80 (Trash-80). I started working for Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) back in their 386 days and have been involved in all phases of CPU and Chipset production. So it seems like we have a solid group of people that have a lot of computer experience.

Every time they try that they get hit with a monopoly lawsuit. Plus Microsoft sucks, ever since they introduced windows, their OS’s have been bloated and weak. Come to think of it, they do that to all of their software. They only reason I still run windows is because I like to play games and all the good FPS (First Person Shooter) are only window OS games. If you don’t have to use Microsoft I would suggest switching to Linux and open source office programs, you would be much happier.

There's been some discussion in the thread concerning an "interesting web poll" about an increase in spam. Let me throw this out and see what y'all think. (I thought this thread more appropriate for what I'm about to say than the other.)

I've long thought that the most effective means of fighting spam would be an email program whereby the user would designate senders (by their email address) from whom he/she would agree to receive email and all others would be rejected. For instance, the user would list everyone in their address book (and only those) as acceptable. I even sent Microsoft an email suggesting such a system for their Outlook mail program but of course, they ignored me. What do y'all think of my idea? Any reasons why such a screening system wouldn't work?

Not to step on your idea... but there are a lot of programs out there already...
    here is one:
    http://www.mailwasher.net/[/ur/]

there are also programs your mail server can install... spamassassin is one that is used a lot...
[url]http://spamassassin.apache.org/

Outlook also has filters(rules) that you can setup, they can be a pain but are effective.

I just remembered an experience I had with a hard drive that was going bad.

I had a system that for some reason started to open programs and boot very slowly. I found that it had a ton of spyware on it and a few viruses. I got it all cleaned up and it was better but not perfect. I ran scandisk and it turned up a bad sector which is not that big of deal, unless you have data written to that sector when it goes bad. So I backed up all the data and reformatted the hard drive and reloaded the operating system and everything was fine, for about two weeks. Then it started having the same symptoms again. Again I found a ton of spyware and removed it all, this time the system ran normally so I just stopped there. Then in a week it started again. This time when I ran scandisk it found more bad sectors. I reformatted and ran scandisk and again it found more bad sectors. I replaced the hard drive and it has run fine since.

The spyware did not cause the bad sectors but it helped mask the real problem.

So if there are any other symptoms that you see, like it taking a long time to boot up or shut off, it will help us narrow down the problem.

I run spybot, adaware, and AVG Anti-virus these are all free. A virus can also really slow down your system performance so if you have not ran a virus check lately you should do that to.

Another question would be do all your applications take a long time to open?

My laptop has a Pentium(2 or 3) 135 Mhz (I think) with 256 megs of ram. I have loaded Windows XP on it and it runs slow compared to my desktop which has an Athlon 64 3000+ and 1 gig of ram, but the laptop still runs all of my applications just fine it just takes a bit longer for windows to open and what not.

I use an IE based browser called SlimBrowser. It is a tabbed browser and is very fast. It has a lot of cool features.. like you can group web pages together, so to open all the pages all you need to do is click on the group. It also has an AutoLogin feature that saves password and usernames, it then adds it to a list, you select it out of the list and it logs you in. These are just a few, I really like it and have been using it for a few years.

You are welcome, just glad I was able to help.

I agree there are a lot of great people here.

Ok, will do and I will try and remember the time difference :)

I'm not sure I could write to you how to do it, but if you have MSN or Yahoo, I would be more than happy to try and talk you through it. I have set up rules and such so that my emails go to certain folders but I have not delt with sending other email acounts to other inboxes. Tomorrow I will take a look at my outlook and see if I can figure it out.
