Posts from Robbie in thread „Politics“

Cheers. although I have been a member since 2012 but i've always been more of a lurker.

Well here's to a more active account from you and again welcome aboard.

Interesting twist in the Conservative leadership contest with Gove throwing his hat into the ring.

Opinion polls I have always felt are intended to promote a particular agenda.

The amazing thing about the EU referendum is that Brexit won despite all main political parties being opposed to it along with the banks, global businesses, the outside world including President Obama who intervened and of course 99% of the media.

Celtic fan - I would be interested in your Dad's opinion now on Scottish independence. Incidentally a warm welcome to this forum and I hope to see you around for a long time to come.

After the original independence referendum a lot of her parties promises about the economy were proven to be grossly overestimated. We also never got a straight answer about keeping the pound and what would happen when the oil runs thin. I can only imagine the same questions would come up again and still be left unanswered.
Sturgeon tries to come across as friendly and nice but to put it bluntly I didn't nor ever will trust her.

What is the feeling amongst Scots? We're lead to believe that a vote for independence would be imminent at present.

For me personally I thought Scotland was better off in the UK, independence threw up too many questions that were never really answered properly. To put it bluntly I didnt believe the SNP in regards that we'd be better off. That's not to say i'm a British patriot however, far from it in fact. I felt that the yes campaign was based on nationalism rather than a belief that we'd be better off.
I also noticed a few mumbles over a united Ireland but I think that would do more harm than good. I can only imagine it could cause a lot of tension.

Interestingly support for the Union between Great Britain and Northern Ireland has never been stronger. There are some opportunistic politicians over here who feel that they can exempt Northern Ireland from Brexit but this is pie in the sky talk.

Sturgeon worries me, I cannot fathom how an independent Scotland could be viable.

Was certainly surprised at that. I believe we've done the right thing though, hopefully stuff eases off after a while.

What does slightly worry me is that Scotland becomes independent for the sole reason of joining the EU again.

The EU would not want an independent Scotland, besides other countries are now looking out of the EU.

I'm surprised with you CelticFCDuke you strike me as someone who would favour the breakup of the UK based on your name.

It appears that the "In" camp are going to record a resounding victory on Thursday, it's a shame as their campaign has been focused on project fear rather than presenting a positive vision of the UK in the EU.

Brexit have suffered from having the media and the establishment completely against them, they are portrayed as "Little Englanders" who are bigoted, racist and financially inept who seek to isolate the UK and destroy the economic systems in place.

    Hi Rob,
Good to know that most of my buddies on Duke's website are still around. Sorry it's been so long since I posted here but I don't spend 8-10 hours a day on the computer like I used to.
    Jim

So happy you're still about. The new format is a little confusing but you'll soon get used to it.

Will we be hearing more of you soon Jim?

There are a few too many older threads being resurrected and causing confusion, this one may have more merit as it's got some substance to it but some of the others are creaking around for no good reason.

Perhaps a nice spanking new thread would be the order of the day? This one has been dead since 2015 and perhaps a new thread will reignite some good discussions?

Stumpy my old friend, how are you? Great to see you, I noticed you haven't registered in the "Active Member's" thread and I worried you may have left.

I'm for leaving the EU but it seems like it will be around 65% to 35% in favour of remaining. Immigration over here is out of control and as things stand I don't feel there is any real and tangible benefits of staying in the EU. Your president has kindly advised us that if we leave the EU we will be at the back of any queue going forward so it looks like the special relationship maybe strained.

It's amazing that in two great countries like the USA and UK we constantly have to resort to voting for the lesser of 2 evils.

I was disappointed with Romney's comments regarding the UK Olympics, however I mean no offence to his supporters on here, many of whom I respect.

I must say I found that bumper sticker very funny, out of interest what are Americans views of George W Bushs' 2 terms as president?

P.S. On the other hand, Robbie, you weren't tweaking with your cousins across Atlantic, were you?

Sorry Chester, I love you guys and I couldn't resist, I thought you knew my sense of humour by now.

Didn't think I would need to post this but it seem that I do.

Anyone that thinks I am a Clinton fan clearly hasn't read my posts since I have been a member of this site.

    Your naive Bill.

Clinton is a man of few words but when he speaks he means what he says, like a monument carved in granite he stands as a symbol of American virtue, strength and courage, even as the values of his country change around him. However throughout a lifetime of passion, determination and triumph his greatest role is always that of Bill Clinton, American.

I'm sure few would disagree with that.

    Stumpy

Funny you mention seeing Obama every night on TV he has been glaringly missing from our TV's since becoming elected. Bush had more coverage in his two terms.
No doubt with the forthcoming G20 conference of clowns he will be the star guest
and pop up for every photo opportunity.

Mike we must be watching different channels as Obama always seems to be on TV. Just today there was coverage of him on a chat show and some footage of him broadcasting a message to the people of Iran.

I felt I had to reply to this one as it was in a thread I did like to look at, and I was outraged at what I read!

In a similar vein Elly I was unhappy with your post as you seemed to take it upon yourself to give a left wing view claiming this was representative of all UK citizens.

I didn't reply to your post originally but I am unhappy that there is a stereotype that all British citizens are anti American, for this reason I would like your post above added to the list of posts to be moderated.

If anyone is ever asked to describe the word "dignity", this clip would be a prime example.

I am truly disappointed with the outcome of this election and I feel Americans have voted to have an historical candidate rather than having a true gem.
