Posts from The Ringo Kid in thread „Ummmm, ummmm good“

Ringo, I think we need to go have a picnic as you seem to be quite adept at attracting objects other than ants. I would have to say that my wife probably packs a sting herself.

I had this great recipe tonight. If there is anything good that has come out of my confinement here in the nasty north, its halibut. What a terrific dish. I pounded out a few fillets to about an half inch and ran the fillet through some japanese bread crumbs (Panko is a good brand). After that I ran it through some milk and egg mix and back through the bread crumbs. This is a lot like a chicken-fried steak. I fried it in olive oil for about 4 minutes each side. Take some lime (lemon is way over-rated) and squeeze it on top with some cilantro and wow, best fish. If any of you guys like a good ceviche let me know.

    Bo

Hi Bo, a picnic sounds good. The only bad thing is is that most of the gals I know have up and married and moved well out of the area. However, were still in a bit of luck as I know and get along very well with several of the ladies who live in my apartment complex. :D

Chester, I would have to agree about the differences in culture contributing to different taste. When I go home, one of the biggest sellers at the vendors is white corn that is drained and put in a cup. After that, they usually add butter, mayonaisse, a mexican hot sauce, and sour cream. I am not kidding about this. My wife and friends go crazy on this stuff. I can't even get a spoonfull down. DISGUSTING:ohmy: . With that said, it does seem popular. Bags of tortilla chips with hotsauce, queso y blanco, and lime squeezed in it goes good to. Now that I like. Pretty cool business you got going.

    {{{{
Down here this is a popular seller: Fried & Breaded: Corn-on-the-Cob, and Smoked Corn-on-the-Cob. As Popeye said more than once: "I's cants stands its no more."
    }}}}

Now to my romeo friend Ringo. What's the secret? Good restaurants, women, and weather. I'm jealous.

Heh hee, no secret really ;-D But to make a long story short, I used to sit at the picnic table across the street from my house at the park, and I used to draw pictures for neighborhood kids. Well, I saw these two very cute gals walk past every day at the same time and we always waved at each other. Well, one day they came to the table while I was drawing and introduced themselves and made nice comments about my drawings.

Well, we became friends and we sort of made it a point to meet at that table. Well, two eventually grew to four, and four to seven. :D

I was also the most popular guy to sit with at the job I had in 2002. This place had plenty of pretty women working there and I sort of met and became friends with most of them. Well, every day before work started as well as for breaks and lunch breaks, we all met and sat at the same table. The males working at the place had the exact same attitude as those Sailors did. Needless to say, the ladies reacted the exact same way as those seven other gals did. I also used to hand out with four of these ladies. :D

If there are any secrets to this, I sure don't know what they might be. :D

WOW! Carl - good food and a bevy of seven beauties all at one time! I'm jealous!
    Cheers - Jay:beer:

Hi Jay, what had happened was:

I was friends with several nice-looking gals and I was going to take four of them to lunch one time. While we were on the way to Pizza Hut, the other three glas I knew were walking down a street and we all inquired if they wanted to join us--which they agreed.

We arrived at Pizza Hut at about noon and went in. The place was a bit crowded and we wer placed ata large table next to one that had several Sailors eating at - who were from NAS Kingsville. Every single one of them freaked out that I was with seven pretty gals and we all knew what they were thinking. We "played it to the hilt" and the gals gave me hugs and kissed my cheeks. Needless to say, I blushed and grinned like a baboon.

A few of the Sailors stared and that was when the prettiest two (one on each side of me) moved closer to me and kissed my cheeks. One of the sailors made a snide remark which only encouraged the gals even more.

Two sailors came up to the table to introduce themselves trying to get some eyefulls of the gals. Needless to say, they all left without getting any of the gals numbers.

One might ask how I could afford to pay for 8 lunches? Well, as that was about 18 years ago, the personal pan pizzas were only $1.99 each.

Anyway, it was a fun experiance. Have to cut this short as the library is closing.

Hi Keith, do as Stumpy suggested and just sneak across the border between South Texas and Mexico. You do not have to worry about swimming at all because more often than not, the so called river--is completely dry for miles around. In some places a bit further away from the Gulf of Mexico, you might get your shoes wet and in others, you might be in water a few feet deep. Don't try crossing at Big Bend National Park. There you will have to climb up steep cliffs, worry about Rattlers and Black and Brown Bears.

Call me when you make it here because I will let you and the fam, stay at my flat till we can get you a place. Only bad thing about my place is that its only a 1 bedroom flat and not much privacy. ;-D

Hey Keith, it looks delicious. The recipes sure makes for a tasty treat, and I have to say, I've never heard of steaming a dessert before. I think everyone will appreciate that link.:present: Good stuff. I will try it as soon as I get a chance. The article said it was a simple task, but usually the simple ones turn out the most wicked.
Ringo, hey brother, do you ever eat at home?:stunned: I tell you, I like to eat at Furrs as well. Furrs and Luby's are getting harder to find and are non-existent up here. I guess if we lose touch I could always hang out at the Cracker Barrel to find ya. So many good restaurants down home. There isn't a lack of them here, just a different menu. NOW, about them senoritas!! They sure make the food taste better don't they? I wish I could have a few of them hugs, but my senorita wife would take it to me. Hot blooded, mean-tempered,jealous....... Gotta love em. If I ever get to settle down, I'll throw on some steaks on the grill, sit back and enjoy some beer and ceviche.
    Bo

Hi Bo, sometimes it does not seem so. As a matter of fact, today we ate lunch at Kentucky Fried Chicken. My nextdoor neighbor needed to run around doing some medical stuff and I was not busy so we took my car out and did the chores. I needed to do some banking and after that, it was suggested we go munch some lunch. It was a bit of a rip-off though, they were out of all my favorite soda flavors--like Dr. Pepper (sadly they don't have Rootbeer) so I had to settle for Diet Mountain Dew which makes one want to shout out in extreme pain.

Furrs is great but here Luby's isn't a very good place. Last time I ate at one here was about 5 years ago. Cracker Barrel will never fall out of favor for me--love the place too darn much ;-))

Those Senoritas sure do make the dishes taste much spicier--especially when I get my hugs from the two Cindy's. And when I went there last Friday (my usual day for Furrs) I got kisses from two of them after I had given them both some Chocolates for Valentines Day. I still had some lipstick on my cheek hours later from Cindy #1 when I got home. You are correct, those spicy women of American-Mexican heritage, sure do have tempers but on the good side of things, they can sure "rock" your world as well. Another thing, if one has an ego, being with these three lovely ladies can sure bring up ones morale as well.

Did I ever tell you the one about the 7 pretty blondes and Brunettes that I took out to lunch one time? It made a group of Sailors wonder what the heck I had going for me.

    Carl,

We had a conversation about steaks, last year,
and that big, big, one you promised me!!!
Don't start again, you make me hungry!!!

Hi Keith, can't you see that im trying to get you to sell your house and move your family to Texas! :hyper: where the stars at night, are big and bright (clap clap clap) deep in the heart of Texas. :russia: Also, I echo what Jay said about Dairy Queen--I love that place. Man, their ice cream is so darn gooooooooooooood. Their chicken strips are great but I still favor the ones from Bennegan's much more. Their Hunger-busters ARE so good. I normally do not think of D.Q. for burgers though because we habe Wal-Bangers, Whataburger, Wendy's and (sic) McDonalds within about 5 minutes walking distance from my flat.

Ringo Kid, brother you just said the right words. Pecan pie. My father used to make us go out and pick up pecans from the trees we had in the back yard. My aunt would use those fresh pecans and make the best pie. I only have the option of the frozen type up here in the Oregon wilderness, but every once in a while we will find one in a restaurant. I think you and I could do some eatin if we get the chance. Ethan, I'm not sure what treacle sponge and custard is, but I'm willing to give anything a try.
    Bo

Hi Bopoppa, i'd definately look forward to doing that! Corpus Christi has many great places to eat at here.

    A few examples:

U&I Restaurant (which is owned by Greeks) Everything I ever had there was no less than excellent--dessert included.

Montana Mikes another excelelnt place ane now one of my most favorite of new restaurants. M.M has been here now I think a full year.

Cracker Barrel, my absolute favorite place in town. Not kidding, I have probably eaten there at least 1,000 times in the past 10 years. I have only been disappointed eating there once--which was on Thanksgiving about 2 years ago.

Taste of Texas, one of many great steakhouses in town. Always a great place to go to.

    Texas Roadhouse, another great steakhouse.

Longhorn Steak & Ale, another Greek owned restaurant, and another great place to eat. I have never been unsatisfied with a meal from them.

Longhorn Steakhouse (not affiliated with the one named above) used to be excellent, but has gone a bit downhill--tho--still not too bad of a place to eat at. You HAVE to try their Cucumber Sauce--man that stuff is delicious & fattening.

Another place I frequent at least 2-4 times a month is Furr's Cafeteria. The Furrs here in C.C. is excellent and cannot be compared to other Furrs Cafeterias. Also, they have an added benefit. I know three of the waitresses there very well and I get my weekly hugs from all three of them everytime I go there. And besides, all three of them are very pretty Senoritas (SP?)

Now if you want good Hamburgers in this town, you have to go to Wal-Bangers. Since we no longer have a Bennegans, Wal-bangers is THE place in town to go to for hamburgers.

Best Pizza place in town used to be Dentoni's but they closed. Now if you want a decently good pizza, you have to go to Papa John's.

Floyd's used to be the best place in town for a Chickenfried Steak, then went downhill for a few years but, I heard they were making an impressive comeback.

Bubba's Icehouse used to be a great place as well but kept changing hands. The first owner ran a great place but, sold out to some Mexican fellow who almost ruined the business. Luckily, he sold it to some lady who has (happily) turned that place around and is doing really well.

Want a great breakfast, the best two places in town are: (believe it or not) Golden Corral and IHOP.

    Italian:

My favorite place in town is the Olive Garden.

    Chinese:

My favorite place in town is: Mandarin Gardens.

I know it looks like we eat out all the time here but, it really aint the case. We just go to a different one until we run out of them and then start over.

Oh and, the best place to buy Cake from in town is a place called: Janet's Cakery.

The best actual Bakery in town is: Ayers (Dixie Cream) Bakery. They have the best Doughnuts one will ever eat. They are way better than Dunkin' Doughnuts is no longer in the area but I remember their s were pretty good--though the last time I ate there was in Kingsville and I was probably about 6 years odl--well-over 30 years ago., Krispy Kreme (which I cannot stand, I ate there once a few months after they first opened here) as well as Shipleys (which is alot like Krispy Kreme) as their Doughnuts to me taste like eating cake for breakfast.

I guess a Coastie could find a home in "Navy Country". My wife and I love the area and I actually have some family there that isn't related to the wife. My cousin is a teacher in the area. I will be all over the Lexington when I get a chance. I'm really starting to get into Naval WWII history. I was invited to Guadacanal this September with some of the historians I met at Pearl Harbor Symposium. Of course, they forget every five minutes more than I know, but they humor me. It sure is good to be back on the board though. All of you guys and gals are terrific.
    Bo

Hi Bo, that is good to know, and if you need info dining info and such; just feel free to ask. :pizza: I can steer you away from the not-so-good eateries and can steer you to the better ones in town. One thing I can't stand is the over-whelming number of Chinese restaurants that are here. I LOVE Chinese food but--just too many places here. If you find yourself here anytime soon, go et at the Mandarin Gardens--tis a nice place and the prices are good and wait staff are excellent. And besides, I live in teh apartment complex located just behind where Mandarin Gardens and Whataburger is.

Hi Bo, i'd look forward to you retiring down here. After all, this area of the country is known as "Navy Country." In case you did not get enough of Navy ships, we do have the U.S.S. Lexington carrier on permanent display here. It is now a Museum. Recently I finally managed to visit her and was amazed at what I saw.

Anyway, on Corpus Christi, it's not a bad city at all if you like access to beaches, and mostly warm to hot weather. Today as a matter of fact is in the upper 70's temperature-wise. Prices on most things are cheaper here as well and we have tons of restaurants though, sadly; we do not have any German restaurants. Prices for regular unleaded gasoline is: $1.99 per gallon and we no longer sell gas for that windbag in Venezuela (Sp?) hugo chavez.

One change - I love scallops.

What's funny is that when the wife and I got married (1960), she didn't like seafood of any kind, I think because she'd never eaten much of it. We were in the NCO Club at Hickam AFB one night about '62 or '63 - I ordered lobster for myself and a steak for her. During the course of our meal, I talked her into trying a bite of my lobster. Ever since then, she's been totally nuts about seafood of any kind except, you guessed it, scallops.

I take it back a bit. I do like Deviled Crab. Have not had any in about 25 years though.:gah:

How about some Lutefisk and lefse???

Just kidding, my wife's grandpa loves lutefisk and when I 1st met my wife I went to Christmas and they sat me right beside her grandpa(I know it sounds like a movie, but it happened that way) and flopped a couple pieces of lutefisk on my plate, the smell was awful and I had to smother it in butter and salt and pepper. Man, that stuff is gross. Thank god for lefse, that will clean off the taste buds!!

As for chicken and dumplings, I think my mom made it once but I am not sure. Its not a big thing up here in the north country, hehehehe! But it sounds really good the way you guys are describing it.

Most of my ancestors were Norwegian, and they all would be disappointed in me because I can't stand fish. And Todd, I definately can attest to what you said about Lutefisk. My current roommate tried making some a few years ago and stank up the entire area. What the smell reminds me of is something in between boiling burnt tires and sewage.

On the Chicken-n-Dumplings front, you cannot go wrong with that dish. If I could ever get a store around here to start carrying the Banquet version again, i'd be glad to send you some.

Man that is good stuff... I am not much of a cook, but I am going to try a (I think it is banquet) Slow cooker meal, it is in the frozen food isle, Chicken and dumplins. I will let you know how it turns out. I know it won't be as good as homemade, but I hope it is close.

You will not go wrong eating Banquet Chicken-n-Dumplings. They are good but cannot match it when made from scratch. They no longer carry it in my area for some reason >:-(( but if they ever did start to again, i'd have it at least once a week. :pizza:
