Posts from Stumpy in thread „Random Observations“

I got a kick out of seeing those sailors in their13-button trousers. When I first joined the Navy, way back in 1955, those were the kind of dress uniform trousers we wore. I thought they were very "cool". The coolest thing was my waist size, which in those days was 28 inches. Nowadays its 38 inches. Dammit.

Each week I receive an emailed newsletter from a man in Ardmore, OK who maintains a website called Oklahoma History. The newsletter is nearly always interesting. This week's edition contained a link to another website that had some photos taken around 1900. The clarity of these pictures is absolutely amazing, considering that they're more than a hundred years old.

I've always been an avid student of American history so I enjoyed looking at these pictures very much. I imagine there are others here who also enjoy American history and old pictures.

Recently, an acquaintance introduced me to the writings of a British author named (probably a nom-de-plume) Stephen Leather. So far, I've bought about 15 of his books from AbeBooks and have been fairly well satisfied with his plotting.

My favorite Leather character is an undercover policeman named Dan "Spider" Shepherd; however, I must admit that I've come to believe that Leather is a PC-inspired liberal as he's constantly harping on race and other favorite PC subjects in his stories. For instance, although the undercover cop Shepherd is ex-SAS (an individual who should have few doubts about the righteousness of his actions, Leather has him constantly questioning the political correctness of those actions.

Any of our British cousins who've read Leather agree with me?

Smokey, Yes, though, like I mentioned in the Happy Birthday thread, with the way our economy seems to be heading, we all might all be working until our dying day. Don't think there were many folks "retired" during the period between 1929 and 1939.

    Now, don't everyone start calling me an optimist. . . . .

    Chester :newyear:

I don't think ANY conservatives feel very optimistic since Obama came to power.

If you think this article sounds rather pessimistic about the state of California, you should obtain a copy of Mark Steyn's newest book "After America". It's guaranteed to depress the hell out of any true American. And I haven't read much in the book with which I can disagree.

Call me extremely politically cynical but it would not surprise me in the least to learn that this disaster was caused by a moonbat Dummicrat who's trying to damage Rick Perry's presidential candidacy in some way.

Inflation is a real bummer, ain't it?
In 1951, we could buy gasoline for less than 20 cents a gallon - sure do miss that.

Another thing that puzzles me about the act in Norway are the reports saying the guy was armed with a submachine gun. It's very hard even in America, where gun laws are very lax, for an individual to acquire a submachine gun. According to what I understand, it's almost impossible for a European to get hold of any kind of gun, much less an automatic weapon. So how did this nut acquire one?

I have a confession to make. If the reports are correct that he was motivated by a hatred of Islam, I can understand that. I think the western world is slowly committing suicide by letting all the Muslims into our countries. However, I cannot ever condone what this man did.

Something that's almost incomprehensible to me are the news reports stating that the Norwegian murderer, who killed about a hundred innocent people, is only subject to 21 years imprisonment.

If it was up to me, that man would, at a minimum, be imprisoned for the rest of his life.
