    Something I've never understood is how Nielsen determines how people are watching specific TV broadcasts, some of them probably thousands of miles away.



    That is a puzzle to me too! Especially since people are inclined to watch a show that they tape at a later time. Seems fishy to me!
    BTW - I didn't care for either of the personality-involved commercials. My favorite was the Doritos' resurrection commercial.

    When you and I were kids, Jay, we (or at least I) had our mouths washed out with soap if we used such mild profanities as hell or damn. It's been all downhill since the Sixties, dammit. :laugh:



    Jim, I have to tell you a story!

    When I was in the ninth grade (in 1957) I had a English Literature class with a teacher who was rather high strung (and demanding - she looked like one of those schoolmarm spinsters).
    Well, the class was reading from a play (probably Shakespeare) with each student taking a line going around the class. She proceeded to say something in front of the class which, since I was in the back, I couldn't really hear.
    When my turn came along, I went ahead and read my line, which included the word "damn." She totally exploded, saying "I told you not to read that word out loud and you completely defied me! - or words to that effect.
    I don't remember what punishment was metted out but I heard later that she went in the hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
    I don't think I came out too badly as a result!

    I concur that the media has a lot to answer for, but as you others say, many other factors enter the equation, not the least being parenting. For example, I have seen youngsters out at all hours of the night - where are the parents? When I was growing up, I had to be in bed by 10 p.m. on weeknights, though I was allowed to stay up later on Friday and Saturday nights. It wasn't until my last semester in high school that I was allowed more freedom. And I never thought that my parents were overbearing!

    I think Selleck's face has just gained more character with age.
    BTW - He is currently doing CBS's "Blue Bloods" - He is playing the Police Commissioner with a family predominately active on the police force. GOOD SHOW!

    Whatever they do, I don't like the opinions of people who do it for a living. Let's face it, the professional opinions of critics are subjective, NOT objective.
    Opinions are like noses in that most people have one and why should their opinions count more than the opinions of other people?



    Very good point! The only reason the critics seem to have a stronger voice is that they have a forum to voice their opinions!
    BTW - Since I'm retired, maybe I don't fall under your parameters!

    An article, the gist of which I wholeheartedly endorse. I'm sick of self-important snobs telling me what I should like or dislike. This is especially true of "professional" critics.



    Critics, at least in the classical music world, have rarely (with few exceptions) influenced public opinion. Many of the musical works popular today were thorougly trashed by critics when they premiered.

    The first three letters of his suname describes this boob to a tee. And what is so frustrating and infuriating is his attitude that he has done nothing wrong in the slightest. I doubt he will take any responsibity for any lives lost because of his actions.

    I've long been convinced that America's labor unions are the main reason so many American jobs have been "outsourced" to foreign countries. Hell, they've priced themselves out of the market.



    Anyone with common sense would realize this! Makes you think about the thinking processes of the population. We wouldn't have unions if people thought about this and saw how these organizations are bleeding the country dry.

    There are people in this world who are beyond redemption.
    I get so mad when I see and read about people protesting capital punishment outside prisons. What makes me maddest is that they never seem to give a thought for the poor victims; all their concern seems to be for the animals being executed.



    Ain't that the truth!! The viciousness of some of these murders is totally overlooked by the bleeding hearts. They say death by injection is unhumane - Bah, I understand that it's like just going to sleep. The victims certainly didn't die like that!:vomit:

    You know what is sad about gas prices? It got so high there for a while that we are now tickled silly when it comes down to $3.00 a gallon. That was their plan all along, if you ask me. Get the rice twice as high as they want it to be and than bring it down, giving the people a false feeling of relief that it is finally cheap gas. :dead:

    I have to agree, Mark! I noticed when the prices started to drop, everyone was so thrilled to see it drop below $3.50 gal., you'd think it was the latest thing since sliced bread! Not too, too long ago, gas prices were below $l.50 gal.!

    Those prime numbers get more and more elusive as they reach rarefied counts. Of course, they are bunched up at the lower end - 3, 5, 7. 11. 13. 17, 19, 23, 29, 31, etc. and there is no rhyme or reason (thus no formula) to determine them.
