Posts from Stumpy in thread „New Movie Discussion“

Received this set from Amazon yesterday so guess I'll have some of my favorite genre to watch the next few weeks. As you can see, these films get rave reviews from people who've seen them (which I haven't).

I've watched three of these films and so far, haven't been impressed at all. The people giving those rave reviews apparently wouldn't know a really good Western if it came up and bit them. (Still haven't watched "The Tall T" and "Comanche Station".)

It was fun to watch but not memorable.

I was so disappointed in it that I went to the Imdb site and read comments and reviews by other viewers to see what they said. Most of them were very disappointed too.

When it was first released in May I had contemplated going to the theater to see it since I had enjoyed two of the previous three so much but I always try to get a feel for movies before going to the theater. So I had researched it first on the net and didn't find a lot of rave reviews; I therefore decided to just wait on the DVD. Glad I did since it saved me some money.

Old George's "truculent demeanor" was really on display in this film. Though it didn't get much attention by the critics or at the box office, I kinda enjoyed it because he was giving the "establishment" hell and I'm not a big admirer of the establishment either, as you've probably guessed.:teeth_smile:

I dont like Scott that much.

As mentioned in this biography. maybe it was his "truculent demeanor and raspy voice" that turned you off, Mike.
But he did turn in some great performances in various roles. I really liked his acting in "Anatomy of a Murder", "Patton", "The Hustler" and "The New Centurions", even though he didn't play a very likable character in any of 'em.

This movie was just released on DVD in the states. IMO, it's one of Scott's best. An excellent film, made from an excellent story by one of my favorite authors, Joseph Wambaugh. Highly recommended.

Just wanted to let everyone know (if they didn't already) that one of Gregory Peck's better Westerns (one of my favorite Westerns period) will be released on 26 August. It's "The Stalking Moon" and I can almost guarantee that anyone who digs Westerns will like this one. It's also cheap - less than 10 bucks.

During the run-up to the Oscars this year, all the buzz was about "No Country For Old Men" and "There Will Be Blood". As we know, "No Country" won Best Picture (though I don't know why).

Did anyone see the other, and was it any good? It's coming out on disc next week and if it's a pretty good movie, I'll rent it.

Man, those Academy Award voters have some really off-the-wall tastes, IMO.

I rented "There Will Be Blood" today to determine whether it deserved all the praise that it garnered prior to the Oscar presentations. I'll admit that Daniel Day Lewis did a bang-up job as the lead actor in that movie but the story itself was more than two hours of total boredom.

Coming on top of the Best Picture Oscar for "No Country", (which I didn't understand the award), I'd strongly recommend that anyone contemplating the purchase or rental of either one of these films because of all the pre-Oscar hype save their money.

Come on Stumpy, nothing wrong with a little sack time!!!!

Hey Todd, the expression "sack time" to me has always meant "to sack out", i.e., sleep.

What does "sack time" mean to you, huuuuuuuh?:teeth_smile::teeth_smile:

He was laughed at, criticized and scorned, but pulled it off,
    and looked credible!
    Good luck to him

Imo, he looked much more than credible, Keith. Far as I'm concerned, he was the most believable 007 yet. Let's face it, trained assassins are supposed to look and act like assassins, meaning they're supposed to be extremely ruthless and without mercy toward their opponents. Dan was exactly that. Much more so than the others, with the possible exception of Dalton. The others, even inluding Connery, have always acted like they're more interested in bedding the ladies than eliminating their enemies.

I think he's do good in a western, I think.

I think so too. I don't know why but I just have a feeling he'd be a natural for a good Western. I never had that feeling about any of the other guys who played Bond, with the possible exception of Tim Dalton.

He's got the makings of a mega movie [star] provided he doesn't goof up.

I wholeheartedly agree. I haven't felt this excited about a movie star in a long, long time.

Now watch....after winning my movie loyalty in "Casino Royale", he'll fall flat on his face in the new one.
