Posts from Stumpy in thread „Any (American) football fans here?“

Well another game that I hope will be worth watching is the Georgia/Florida game this Saturday on that neutral site in JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA. (sigh)

I'll keep my fingers crossed for your Dawgs.

For the first time in awhile, OU will play Nebraska Saturday. The Cornhuskers ain't what they were when Tom Osborne was coaching them. (Thank goodness)

Switzer and Royal will go down as two coaches that brought out the best in each other and their teams. Did their players get extra dibs, maybe. Both made college football fun.

Barry and Darrell sure didn't like each other though. I've read that one of the main reasons Darrell retired as the Horn coach was because Barry beat him so much. They had a ferocious rivalry.

Osborne at Neb had his issues with players. Now he is in politics, seems coaching isn't that far from being politician now does it.

I think Tom ran a pretty clean program at Nebraska. I don't remember reading about much hanky-panky in Tom's teams.

I don't think he's any longer a state rep for Nebraska. If I remember correctly, his ambition got the best of him and he decided to try for a Senate seat and got beat. Should have been satisfied with the House seat. Nope, according to this, he ran for governor of Nebraska and got beat. Now he's athletic director for U. of Nebraska.

At div 1 level the talent is so good it is hard to believe many don't take freebies. Bush clearly has and someone is protecting his rearend. Sooner or later too much evidence will come to light and he will get nailed.

    Which Bush?

You may remember that Stoops had to get rid of his star QB a year ago because he and another player were "employed" at one of those makework, booster-financed jobs at a car dealership in Norman.

I know when Barry Switzer coached at OU, he was very lax about such things and somehow managed to coach there for about 20 years without getting more than a slap on the wrist. I really liked old Barry and his win/loss record was so good that I (and most other OU fans) were willing to overlook many of the rumors about hanky-panky in the program.

To give you an idea of Barry's attitude toward shenanigans, one time when they were headed to the Orange Bowl in Miami, I remember laughing about Barry's advice to the team while they were there. "Just stay out of jail", he told them.:teeth_smile:

We had American Football, live here in the UK.
On Saturday, we had the Chargers V Saints,
    at Wembley Stadium.
It was a great spectacle, and was a huge success.

Pro football is okay but for true excitement and spectacle, Keith, you should see a college game between two good teams. After all, the pros are only playing for money but the college kids are playing for honor and school glory. For instance, if you ever get a chance, be sure to watch the Oklahoma-Texas game, which is always played at Dallas during the Texas State Fair. Now that is a game [usually] worth watching.

The Cowboys were 1 mistake away from beating Texas Saturday. But we did better than I thought we would.

I would have given anything to have seen the Cowboys beat 'em. They played a heckuva game, that's for sure.

It's going to be interesting to see how Texas does against Tech.

If they beat Tech, I'll have to admit they are champion material, as much as I hate to say it.

What would make my day is to see the Horns play Penn State for the championship and for State to win it. I just have never liked the Longhorns, for reasons previously stated.

I have a hunch that this will be Joe Paterno's last season as Penn State's head coach (he'll be 82 in December) so I would dearly love to see him go out as a national champion.

Old Joe has always been one of my favorite coaches as I've never read of a breath of scandal about his team or any of its' players. His character is on a par with that of the Duke, a trait that is rare in big-time college football. And Penn State has been screwed before in the quest for a national championship. He shouldn't have to suffer another screwing.

Any word historian knows the State name is the conjuction of 2 Choctaw words.
I've just never seen such an intriguing .er. "conjunction" before. :omg: Oh my...

C'mon, TBone, don't leave 'em hanging; tell 'em it means "red man" in Choctaw. I doubt there are many word historians on the board.:wink_smile:

Well being an Oklahoma Aggie, I learned a long time ago that the one thing you don't do is brag on OSU football. They generally give you many opportunities for humble pie through the season.

I'll just be glad we are where we are and hope for a good rest of the season and leave it at that.

This oughta be a barn burner this year. OU still has tough games left with OSU, Texas Tech, and Kansas. Of course, "on any given Saturday".

You know, OU could come back in the Big 12 too. I remember several years ago (I think when Barry was coaching), Nebraska (and Tom Osborne was their coach) beat OU during the regular season but somehow they both ended up in the Orange Bowl and if I remember correctly, it was for the national championship. OU won the bowl game.

I have a ticklish situation with two grandkids (my daughter's two). My granddaughter is a fan of OSU (she wants to go there and study to become a vet (she's an animal lover), whereas my grandson is a big OU fan. Don't know how my daughter keeps the peace.

With Mizzou, Okie St, and Texas Tech, one of them should knock them off.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I just have never liked the University of Texas or its' football team. To me, UT and/or its' students personify all that is objectionable about stereotypical Texans - braggarts, loud-mouthed, obnoxious and overbearing. And this opinion is from someone born in Texas.

I have nothing against Texas A&M or any of the other big schools in the state, only UT.

Oh, I forgot to mention this - UT is located in Austin, which is to Texas as San Francisco is to California - very, very liberal.

    Stumpy,

I don't mean to get your dander up but there are still 2 unbeaten teams in Oklahoma; although I thought the Cowboys were, in classic style, going to give it away in the last 1:50 of the game with that stupid run the clock out idea.

You don't get my dander up, T-Bone. Like I said, the fortunes of OU football are far less important to me at 70 than they were when I was 30 or 40. As I've aged, I've realized that there are many things more important than football. Like my wife, my kids and grandkids, the lives of our boys overseas fighting for us, etc.

I'd give almost anything to see OSU beat the Horns though. Also Mizzou.

    STUMPY

No, in all seriousness, I've found that as I've aged, the game of football, even OU football, is not nearly as important to me as it once was. 30 or 40 years ago, I'd probably have slit my wrists if OU had been knocked from its' #1 perch by the despised Longhorns but now, I just say to myself, "So what - life goes on - it's only a game".

OU played lousy defense today and probably deserved to lose.

BTW, Ned, this is not my football debate, it's our football thread.

The thing that bothers me most about the OU-Texas rivalry is that for almost a century, the game has been played in Dallas which, as you know, is in Texas. They call it "neutral" territory because it's about equidistant between the two college campuses. Neutral, my butt. IMO, you can't have a "neutral" game site if it's played in the same state each and every year. Especially if that state is Texas.

Hey, did y'all see that "neutral" state flag flying outside the stadium? And hear the announcements about the "Neutral" State Fair.:wink_smile: Neutral, my fanny.

I'm very close to turning off the TV and going for a nap. One of the aspects of capitalism that irritates me the most is the rampant commercialism that permeates every single television program, especially sports. My gosh, it's just one stinkin' commercial right after the other. So much so that I don't even enjoy watching OU games anymore. And you'd better believe that when I won't watch OU play football, something is seriously wrong.
