Posts from DukePilgrim in thread „Are there any Good Actors out there today?“

Marty's drug and alcohol problems spiraled out of control from New York New York at lasted until late 1980's when he received treatment. It is also believed that De Niro actually directed and controlled a large portion of the filming of Raging Bull as Scorsese was incapacitated because of his drug use. After, King of Comedy he refused to work with him again until he cleaned up his act He helped relaunch his career with Goodfellas, Cape Fear and Casino. It is obvious to any fool that his work from 1990 onwards is the work of a sane man whereas his earlier work is like something from hell.

While I appreciate Scorese work as a film buff and he has made a couple of great movies
he is not in the same league or ball park as Ford or Spielberg as directors or as box office success makers. He would openly admit that those facts.

It is also widely rumoured that his Oscar for The Departed was given to him because there were major concerns over his health with recurring asthma, heart trouble plus the damage he did to himself with drugs alcohol abuse and treatment for depression.

His box office record is attached for your information. Please note that films are expected
to gross one and a half to twice their budget to be regarded as money makers.

His biggest commerical hit to date was The Color of Money which is more likely due to early Tom Cruise not getting such a heavy paycheck.

His last four movies have made serious losses and if the advertising and marketing costs
were added in they would be more. Budget is the first figure Gross is the second were there is another figure in brackets Foreign Box Office is added. Those highlighted in red lost money.

While some of these actors show promise others like Nicholson and De Niro are hyped beyond belief. As for Pacino once he looked to talk his lines as opposed to mumbling them he improved as a actor.

The true guide of whether any of these actors are great will be will anyone remember them 30 years after they are dead.

Of all the Scorsese film you quote apart from Goodfellas they all LOST bucket loads of money because nobody went to see them. Hardly a successful partnership!!!

To be honest Scorsese only got his act together from late 1980s before that he was a complete coke head to the point were he was admitted to hospital and it reflects in his work,

I quote from biography on Robert De Niro not a mystery source.
