Rawhide: Season 4, Episode 5
The Lost Tribe (27 Oct. 1961)
Well would you believe it, this episode
carried a sub-plot that not only involved the cattle,
but also starred Clint & Sheb!!
The daft bit, was that without anyone ever knowing before,
Sheb was raised by Cherokee Indians, and what a coincidence,
the same renegade lot, that had just rustled the cattle.
Hold on, it gets dafter, Sheb was even married to one of the squaws,
and because she was deceased, BY Cherokee custom,
her sister was now his wife!!
To make it worse Sonya Wilde, who played White Deer the sister,
was the worst actress to utter an Indian accent!!
However it wasn't a bad episode and I enjoyed it
My gosh, I can't believe it. This afternoon I watched another episode of "Rawhide", a series that many of us agree was one of the worst TV Westerns ever made. And who should appear in it as the guest lead but Barbara Stanwyck, a lady who I personally thought was a wonderful actress. I couldn't believe it, seeing Ms. Stanwyck in this lousy series. The name of the episode was "The Captain's Wife" and it was in the 4th season of the series.
Rawhide: Season 4, Episode 14
The Captain's Wife (12 Jan. 1962)
This one featuring Barbara Stanwyck,
in another episode with a sub-plot,
that has nothing to do with the drive.
At least this one includes Gil Favor,
and some other unknown drovers.
However Clint and Sheb, no where to be seen,
even though on the opening credits!
There were some cattle, briefly at the beginning,
which is unusual for many Rawhide episodes!!
Rawhide: Season 4, Episode 4
Judgment at Hondo Seco
Another reasonable story, as it appears, Season 4, had stronger stories, and the episodes longer.
However, this was typical of many of the Rawhide episodes,
in which the sub-plot is bigger then the whole.
Although the plot centers around one of the drovers,
Clint and Sheb, also in the mix, just about,
one gets the feeling that the writers/producers
just used the Rawhide series, to provide a vehicle
for many miscellaneous stories,
non of which were remotely connected to a cattle drive!!
A point, I feel sure Stumpy and I will discuss again and again
Hi Keith,
I can't remember if I have that episode or not. Do you know offhand which season it's in?
Rawhide: Season 4, Episode 7
The Black Sheep (10 Nov. 1961)
I've found a couple more to watch,
so will keep you posted
Jim, you'll be pleased to know, I just watched a half decent episode,
featuring Richard Basehart
The Black Sheep
...and here's our dedicated thread on the man
Composers of the Saddle- Dimitri Tiomkin
There were many great guest stars on the show, in addition to Stanwyck and Chaney, there was Broderick Crawford, Claude Rains, Dan Duryea, Brian Donlevy, Margaret O’Brien, Victor Jory, Buddy Ebsen, Bob Steele, Julie London, Tom Conway, Debra Paget, Robert Culp, Don Barry, Ralph Bellamy, Audrey Totter, and others. I still enjoy the series a geat deal myself.
Yes indeed and I bet if many of them looked back,
they may wish they hadn't ha ha

Well that's it, I've watched my final episode of this awful series.
Thankfully finishing on a high note
Incident of the Tumbleweed
was more like it, with for a change the sub-plot
integrating well with the cattle drive.
Plenty of action and lots of steers in this one,
pity we can't say that for the rest of the series!
Haha maybe it's time you guys give up on Rawhide, I tried it a few years ago on TCM and once you get over seeing a young Clint there's very little left to stay for. Amuses me seeing consistently bad reviews for them from you both though!
Ha ha, it's fun Jim and me suffering you think
glad you're enjoying our woes!!
However, forever a glutton for more punishment,
I promise I am going to watch one more and that's it!!
Believe it or not, I prefer to watch the drive itself rather than some of the other plot lines. Many of the stories are unbearably stupid.
.
I couldn't agree more, I've just watched the episode
Incident of the Last Chance
It is the stupid sub plots that are so silly,
... newly wed couple who couldn't act to save themselves and Indians that spoke with stupid accents
and were just like white men dressed in drag, I ask you!!
As if the so called writers ran out of ideas writing about cattle,
oh there were some in this episode now and again
Something strange happened,
I watched a half decent episode
The Race
It actually involved cattle driving, ramrods etc.
unusual considering the episodes I've watched!
It also starred a much improved Clint Eastwood,
who was showing signs of the Clint we got to know,
which is more than I can say for Eric Fleming,
whose portrayal as Gil Favor, is making me think
he wasn't that good an actor, but an over actor.
Sorry Eric RIP
Jim, I'm due to watch some more, I'll keep you posted
Can't believe it - I actually watched an episode of "Rawhide" this evening that wasn't half-bad. Title was "Incident of the Dog Days". Hopefully, it's an example of better days ahead.
Strangely Jim, I watched a decent one as well, Incident of the Power and the Plow
I was shocked to see Clint actually in the whole episode,
and even more amazed to notice it was all about cattle and grazing rights,
not the sort of thing I expected from anymore episodes!
A much tougher story line, things are looking up!
I watched what was without a doubt one of the stupidest TV episodes, of ANY series, that ever aired. It was about the 5th or 6th episode of "Rawhide" and the title was "Incident on the Edge of Madness" or something like that. Guest stars were Lon Chaney Jr. and Virginia Mayo. I swear, if that had been the first episode of "Rawhide", the series would probably have been canceled immediately following that particular show, and Clint's career would have been nipped in the bud. It was truly terrible.
Yes Jim, just watched it and yep it's terrible,
Lon Chaney Jr. overacted, particularly over Marie Windsor!
Clint also overacted, just look his at movements and facial expressions,
when Gil Favor and Chaney were fighting!
I thought it truly absurd that Gil Favor the tough trail boss,
would allow for one second, some crackpot make a long speech
recruiting his men!!
However would you believe, not as silly as the one I watched
Incident of the Peyote Cup
Rawhide for me always suffered from the episodes being too similar and the series having little focus. I'd like to get invested into it as I really like Clint but theres just so much of it that's not very good. Somewhat like Gunsmoke for me.

I have to agree, which is a shame really,
as we probably all grew up thinking of Rawhide as a great series.
On reflection however, in later life, the series is looking very poor.
I mentioned on my previous post, that even though the opening credits,
shows starring Clint Eastwood, he didn't appear in this episode even for a second.
I will force myself to watch a couple more, and will report back!!
Just watched a Rawhide
Incident of the Peyote Cup
In which Gil Favor and Wishbone only appeared for a few minutes,
and Rowdy Yates, not at all
In fact it had nothing to do with the cattle either!!
Watched it here

Just also wanted to add that they have Clint Eastwoods picture pretty central on the DVD series covers... i guess he is alive, he has the big name etc.. he draws the people that are too young to remember Eric, and how he was pivotal in carrying that series, and after he left at the end of series 7, series 8 with Rowdy as ramrod only lasted half the season beofre it was pulled, once Eric left that was it, the audience had already seen so many of their favourites get pushed, but the Boss gone... no way...................... it just was not going to fly.
No Boss..no takers.....
Eric also did 2 episodes of Bonanza, 1 of them in 2 parts and aired the day it was announced he had drowned, it starred Dina Merril and was called " The persued" it's on utube the other episode was a single airing close to the other one.
Also i think i may have the date of Eric s death wrong, have to double check, but i think it was 28 Sept not the 30..
I agree Jessie, once you lose your main characters, the series has gone.
Eric died on September 28th. 1966.
Display MoreThe 30 September marked the accidental death of Eric Fleming, who played trail boss in Rawhide, with Rowdy ( Eastwood) as ramrod.
Poor Eric was drowned aged 42, 42 years ago, only a few years after leaving Rawhide whilst filming in South America when a canoe overturned.
There were 2 in the canoe, Eric was a very experienced swimmer and diver but the current dragged him down the Heluaga River, whereas the other man was able to swim to safety.
Eric's body was found 3 days later, and his fiancee was at t he river that day he drowned, they were to be married 2 days later, this was the final shoot i think, and they were then retiring to Hawiia where he had brought a farm.
RIP Eric.
Thanks for this Jessie, it was indeed a tragic event.
