Posts from The Irish Duke in thread „Rawhide (1959-1966)“

Haha maybe it's time you guys give up on Rawhide, I tried it a few years ago on TCM and once you get over seeing a young Clint there's very little left to stay for. Amuses me seeing consistently bad reviews for them from you both though!

I hear ya Stumpy, shows like Maverick and Sugarfoot benefitted from having an executive producer with a vision like Roy Huggins who knew what he wanted and kept an eye on things. Rawhide will live forever because of Clint but alot of it is montages of people herding cattle, watching an episode of Maverick and then an episode of Rawhide would seem like two different eras.

They had some decent directors over their run, Andy McLaglen, George Sherman, Tay Garnett, Ted Post were all fairly decent and a few of em worked with Duke. My favorite part of Rawhide was always Dimitri Tiomkens great theme!

One thing that it's important to remember is that we're lucky Clint and Garner had these types of shows to make mistakes and realize what worked and what didn't. Now adays I imagine both would have been fed to the wolves without a chance, Clint's career had alot of luck but he needed Rawhide to keep him going IMO

Rawhide for me always suffered from the episodes being too similar and the series having little focus. I'd like to get invested into it as I really like Clint but theres just so much of it that's not very good. Somewhat like Gunsmoke for me.
