Good funny episode with a twist!

Alias Smith and Jones is an American Western series that originally aired on ABC from 1971 to 1973.
It stars Pete Duel as Hannibal Heyes and Ben Murphy as Jedediah "Kid" Curry,
a pair of cousin outlaws trying to reform.
The governor offers them a promise of conditional amnesty,
but he wants to keep the pact under wraps for political reasons.
The condition is that they will still be wanted—
until the governor can openly say they have reformed and henceforth warrant clemency.

I thought this a great TV series,
    particularly because of Pete Duel.
He was a talented actor, who died tragically
from suicide at the age of 31.

The series was well acted and scripted, and a lot of fun.
Roger Davis, the series narrator, took over Duel's part,
and although Ben Murphy was a solid actor,
he never quite carried it, after Duel's passing.
It was never the same again, and the series was
    eventually cancelled.

A short and untimely end, to a Classic TV Western.

    Trivia
    * George Peppard was also in the running to replace actor Pete Duel before Roger Davis was chosen. Davis was already acting as the narrator of the opening credits. When he was added to the cast, a different narrator, Ralph Storey, was brought in to do the opening credits.

    * When Pete Duel committed suicide, voice actor Paul Frees dubbed in his voice as Hannibal Heyes in some already completed outdoor scenes of the show where the video was filmed but the audio still had to be re-recorded in the studio.

    * Following co-star Pete Duel's sudden death on December 31, 1971, production on the series came to a halt for only half a day. Filming resumed on the afternoon of January 1, 1972 with Roger Davis re-filming Duel's scenes for the episode in production at the time of his death.

    * The tragic death of series star Pete Duel on December 31, 1971 was not acknowledged by ABC when the next episode aired as scheduled on Thursday January 6, 1972.

    * Roger Davis played a Smiling Gunman in season 2 and was killed by Kid Curry. Davis returned to the series to replace Pete Duel after Duel committed suicide.

    * This series often mixed fictional characters with real-life ones - even the two leads are that mixture. Jed "Kid" Curry was real, a fairly well-known outlaw who committed suicide when trapped (several episodes feature discussions between Curry and Hannibal Heyes on whether they will both stay straight, with Curry sure about Heyes and far from sure about himself).

    * Based on references to various historical events, our heroes spent seven years just looking for amnesty during the two-year run of the series, and were still looking for it when the show left the air.

    Memorable Quotes

[first lines for first season's episodes]
[narrator speaks over scenes of Heyes and Curry committing various robberies]
    Narrator:
Hannibal Heyes and Kid Curry - the two most successful outlaws in the history of the West. And in all the trains and banks they robbed, they never shot anyone. This made our two latter-day Robin Hoods very popular - with everyone but the railroads and the banks.

[cut to scene of posse in hot pursuit of Heyes and Curry]
Jed 'Kid' Curry: There's one we thing we gotta get, Heyes.
    Hannibal Heyes: What's that?
Jed 'Kid' Curry: Out of this business!
